Are You Being Kind, or Are You Afraid of Rejection?

In this episode of Immigrate, Tasha-Gaye explores the difference between genuine kindness and rejection. Tasha-Gaye also shares a personal story about leadership, disagreement, and feeling rejected after trying to keep everyone happy. The episode closes with practical boundary language and a Bible verse from Proverbs 11:17. Key topics Tasha-Gaye revisits the season theme of healthy boundaries for immigrants and builds on the previous episode about people pleasing. She asks a core question: if someone would not be upset, would you still say yes? Kindness is helping when you have the capacity and genuinely choose to help. People pleasing can be tied to fear of rejection, fear of being seen as selfish, and fear of losing approval. Common patterns include saying yes when exhausted, staying quiet to avoid upsetting others, and overextending to keep peace. Immigrant identity, family expectations, firstborn responsibility, and the pressure to “be strong” can intensify self-abandonment. Healthy boundaries communicate limits, preferences, and what is and is not acceptable. Tasha-Gaye shares a personal leadership story about agreeing to support an idea she did not believe in because she feared rejecting someone she valued. Someone else’s disappointment does not automatically mean you did something wrong. Saying no can be an act of refusing to reject yourself. “Can I still be a kind person when I say no?” “Sometimes the boundary isn’t the rejection, sometimes the boundary is finally refusing to reject yourself.” “Those who are kind benefit themselves.” Timestamps00:00 — Season focus: healthy boundaries for immigrants 01:23 — Are you being kind or afraid of rejection? 02:39 — Kindness versus people pleasing 03:06 — Would you still say yes if they were not upset? 04:01 — Why immigrants seek acceptance and belonging 05:01 — Fear of disappointing family and avoiding conflict 05:53 — Feeling responsible for other people’s emotions 06:48 — Disappointment does not mean you did something wrong 07:15 — When kindness becomes self-abandonment 08:36 — Helping while secretly feeling resentful 09:29 — Saying “I’m fine” when you are not 10:20 — Healthy confrontation versus constant conflict 11:41 — What boundaries sound like in everyday language 12:37 — A real example of protecting a time boundary 13:53 — Boundaries communicate limits; they do not control others 14:16 — Why boundaries can feel like rejection 15:38 — Saying no without overexplaining 16:29 — Guilt after saying no 17:36 — Questions to identify people-pleasing patterns 19:24 — A leadership story about privately disagreeing 21:29 — Fear of rejecting someone you genuinely like 22:59 — Supporting something without wanting to participate 23:26 — Feeling rejected when the situation becomes messy 24:47 — You cannot carry someone else’s emotions 25:51 — You can say no and still be kind 26:22 — Boundaries as refusing to reject yourself 27:21 — Proverbs 11:17 and the closing encouragement Notable quotes

The difference between Respect and people pleasing.

In this episode of Immigrate, Tasha-Gaye explores the difference between true respect and people- pleasing, especially through the lens of healthy boundaries, family expectations, and cultural norms. She explains that respect is about recognizing the value, dignity, and boundaries of others, but it must also include self-respect. Respect does not require agreement, silence, or self-sacrifice. You can disagree respectfully, say no without being disrespectful, and still care for others without taking responsibility for their emotions. Tasha-Gaye also breaks down people pleasing as the habit of prioritizing other people’s comfort over your own needs. On the outside, it can look like kindness, reliability, and helpfulness. On the inside, it can lead to exhaustion, resentment, burnout, and a loss of self. She shares that people pleasing often comes from fear—fear of rejection, conflict, disappointment, or being seen as selfish—and from how we were raised. For many listeners, especially those from cultures that deeply value elders, family, and community, it can be hard to separate respect from obedience. This episode encourages a healthier view: you can honor others while still having boundaries and your own opinions.Tasha-Gaye ends with a powerful reminder: the healthiest boundaries come from honesty about what you can and cannot give. You can be kind without abandoning yourself, and you can love people without carrying responsibility for their emotional reactions. Key Takeaways Respect is not the same as agreement People pleasing often comes from fear Saying no can be healthy and respectful Boundaries protect your energy and identity Self-respect is part of respecting others Respect vs. people pleasing Healthy boundaries Fear of conflict and rejection Cultural expectations and family dynamics Learning to say no Self-respect and emotional honesty Notable Quote“You can be kind without being a people pleaser, you can be respectful without abandoning yourself.”Topics Covered
