13. Season 1 Finale - Antitestimony
CONTENT WARNING: Discussions of suicidal ideation, family death
A bit of a different episode today...Meg and Vika talk through how they journeyed into the Church TM and then out of it. There is lots of cringe at our high school selves, along with more serious topics like grief, mental health and how the church treats women.
Thank you for coming along with us for the first season, we've absolutely loved doing this, and can't wait for Season 2!

In the second part of our (not that) deep dive on Communism, we talk about who is possibly the Antichrist again, how the Red Scare affected Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whether colonialism or communism is Worse, why the French Revolution was bad, actually, and how to cleverly edit the Bible so it supports made up statistics. 08. Stalin the Exvangelical: Communism Part 1
In today’s episode, Vika tells Meg about Christianity’s favorite dirty word, Communism. How did these two ideologies which seemingly have a lot in common become bitter enemies? We talk about Marx and Engels’ incredible relationship, Russia’s religious revival, and much like communism itself, Greece and Stalin both show up in unexpected places.

07. But What About the Dinosaurs: Creationism
We’re going back to the original Unprecedented Times this week with an episode about creation myths from all over the world. Are women the root of all evil? Is Zeus out to get us? Or are we all just playthings for a god who was bored? From Genesis to the Quran, Meg walks Vika through a few of the stories people have told about where we came from and what it means to be human.

06. Dying Joyfully to Own the Catholics: Martyrdom
Everybody loves a martyr - but did you know that martyrdom has more to do with cool woodcuts and Greek philosophers than it does with Jesus? In this episode, Vika tells Meg about how everybody in the 1600s considered everybody else the Antichrist and how the very anti-Catholic roots of martyrdom influence American culture today, from the origins of ancient Christian to Henry VIII, the Salem Witch trials, the Civil War, and the Columbine massacre. This episode features a plot twist that we will be thinking about for the rest of our lives and digressions on Bloody Mary and Animal Crossing noises.

05. One Nation Under God: Evangelical Patriots
For those of us who grew up reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in school, its words can feel as old as time itself – but what if we told you the Pledge in its current form is the same age as John Travolta? This week Meg walks Vika through the origins of the Christian Right, how white Evangelicals became the massive voting bloc they are today, and which Supreme Court case started it all (spoiler: it’s not Roe v. Wade). Honorable mention goes to Enemy of the Cast Billy Graham killing communism with kindness.

04. Jesus Doesn't Do Dishes: Weaponized Incompetence
A brief note to say we know the audio is a little wonky on this one! Technology, amirite?
In this statistics heavy episode, Vika gives Meg marriage tips on how to be a submissive wife. She also explores where the idea of women being submissive came from across different religions, the influence of our favorite guy John Calvin, and how that still affects our ideas of gender today. Diatribes include a hall of fame r/ Am I The Asshole post and conversations on the types of books our cats would write.

03. Made For Mothering?: Compulsory Parenthood and an Enemy of the Cast
In this unintentionally timely episode, Meg walks Vika through the views on parenting America just can’t shake and some fascist rhetoric that sounds suspiciously similar to a 20th century US president’s. (Let us know if you figure out which president it is before Vika does.) Meg also covers the stigma around deciding not to have kids, the unnecessary gendering around giving birth, and who called restrictive abortion laws “fetal supremacy.”

02. Hey Girl! : MLMS, Stay-At-Home Moms, and Financial Suffrage
This week on Impure Rethought Victoria presents on everybody’s favorite podcast topic, MLMs aka Multi-Level-Marketing Schemes. But wait! This isn’t your regular MLM episode. She goes into how specifically they prey on stay-at-home moms, the term stay-at-home, which is older than you think, the history of women’s rights and domestic labor, and how all of those things intersect. She also makes Meg do a lot of trivia and has to say 170,000 three times.

01 God Has a Plan: Toxic Positivity, Enlightenment Philosophers, and Empathy
In our very first episode, Meg dives into the evangelical church’s age-old problem with toxic positivity. From old white guys to even older white guys, the “things could be worse” mentality has plagued us for literal centuries. All we can say is … thoughts & prayers!

[…] Definitely a basis of basic knowledge about how the world works, and I think there's also very much a component of how you're expected to function in society. You know, there's your academics, but it's also learning to learn is also part of it. So yeah, I would say broadly speaking, off the top of my head, it would be how the world works around you and how to navigate yourself as a being in it. Yeah, I think I would agree with that definition. I think school exposes you to a lot of things that you will need to encounter in real life. I thought it was an interesting question, especially considering how, truly, how little time education has been compulsory. […]
