From Weston-super-Mare to the Oscars: How This Breakfast DJ Dared Her Way to the Top - with Zoe Hanson

One minute you're hosting the breakfast show in Weston-super-Mare with 9,000 listeners. The next, you're on a plane to the Oscars, rubbing shoulders with Robin Williams, sitting next to Shirley Bassey. What does that do to your confidence?

Broadcaster Zoe Hanson, burst onto National radio in the early 2000s, hosting the Capital Radio breakfast show with Johnny Vaughan. She’s enjoyed a 20 year career in commercial radio. When Heart radio went national, Zoe had to pivot, so she started the SoSo show - a Southampton based podcast, celebrating her local area. She’s now making a name for herself as ‘The Podcast Lady’, hosting podcasts for businesses, and supporting them to make their own.

Zoe says:

It's almost like I dare myself to be more confident — and then I'm more confident, and I ask for what I want. And I think, well, that worked out, so I might as well just try.

We talk about:

* Daring yourself as a confidence strategy. When Zoe wants to challenge herself to do more and more audacious challenges, she simply says to herself: ‘I dare you’.

* “Look like you’re supposed to be there” Zoe’s strategy for holding her own in intimidating rooms (Oscars, Capital Radio, Shirley Bassey at the next table).

* Why preparation is what makes spontaneity possible “Planned Spontaneity”: know your audience, your goal, and your style before you improvise on air - or anywhere else.

* Why asking for help — specifically — is a confidence flex. Zoe’s rule: don’t wait for someone to say “just shout if you need something,” because they won’t. Say exactly what you need, and let people help.

* How she rebuilt her identity after losing her 20-year breakfast show. When Heart nationalised, she compared it to “a footballer retiring” — and talks candidly about the confidence crash that followed, and how she worked through it.

And so much more…

To hear more from Zoe, you can find her on instagram and her website.

This episode was produced by my amazing husband. I had a panic attack on the way to court – then I realised the real problem wasn't me, it was how women are taught to work - With Tamu Thomas

Who gets to define what a “good” life looks like?

For Tamu Thomas, the answer arrived mid-panic-attack, on her way to court.

Tamu is the author of Women Who Work Too Much, and a woman who knows exactly what it costs to keep proving yourself. We talk about burnout, boundaries, and what confidence actually looks and feels like in the body.

After 16 years as a social worker, deciding the fate of vulnerable families, it was Tamu’s own burnout that brought her to her knees. She’s since retrained as a somatic coach, helping high-performing women and organisations thrive without burning out. Her book, Women Who Work Too Much, was published by Hay House in 2024.

Tamu talks to me about why burnt-out leaders can’t actually lead.

“You cannot be grinding in the weeds and lead simultaneously... you need to be like a lighthouse guiding people back to shore and inspiring people.”

In this episode, we explore:

* Why so many high-achieving women are burning out and the “good girl” conditioning behind it

* Tamu’s own turning point: a panic attack on the way to give evidence in court, after 16 years as a social worker

* Why confidence isn’t about certainty and how saying “I don’t know” can be one of the most confident things you say

* How to stop absorbing other people’s disappointment as your own failure

* Why prioritising yourself isn’t selfish, including a practical first step for anyone who feels like they’re doing too much

And my favourite new concept: “Chore play”, the surprisingly practical link between shared domestic labour and intimacy.

And so much more…

If you want to help me get the word out, liking, following, restacking, sharing, rating, reviewing etc makes a huge difference. We’re on apple, spotify and youtube.
