   Charity Podcast: Rose James

   In this episode, we mark 30 years of Hull & East Yorkshire Children’s University with Rose James, CEO of the charity, in conversation with Gerry Morrison and Harriet Wheeldon. Together, they reflect on the charity’s extraordinary journey from its beginnings in 1996 to its work today helping children across Hull and East Yorkshire access experiences that broaden horizons, build confidence and raise aspirations. Rose shares her own journey into the charity, the original vision behind Children’s University, and why out-of-classroom learning remains so important for young people whose opportunities can too often be shaped by circumstance or postcode.    Gerry Morrison and Harriet Wheeldon speak to Chris Huscroft, Chief Executive Officer of Edukos Trust – a Multi-Academy Trust operating primary schools in East Yorkshire. Chris talks about how building relationships is integral to achieving Edukos Trust’s educational aims and the meaning behind its unusual name. Chris explains how developing clear, respectful relationships between Edukos Trust’s Board and its individual schools through its local governing boards, school leaders and stakeholders increases accountability while preserving autonomy. He also talks about how the Trust’s creative partnerships with parents and local communities help every child feel known, supported and ambitious.    In this podcast Gerry and Harriet have the pleasure of speaking to Vic Quinn, Chair of Trustees of House of Light. House of Light is a Hull-based charity that offers group peer support and one to one counselling to help people recover from the symptoms associated with perinatal mental health issues. Being a trustee is often described as a position of responsibility, but it’s also one of learning, collaboration, and influence. Vic brings valuable insight from her experience around the board table, where decisions are shaped not just by good intentions, but by strong governance, clear values, and constructive challenge.    Charity podcast - Rory Clarke

   Gerry Morrison and Harriet Wheeldon, charity law specialists talk to Rory about what prompted him to become a trustee and chair of Hull4Heroes. Rory speaks about his role as Chair and how he supports the Charity’s team to navigate the Charity’s challenges and opportunities. Rory explains the positive impact Hull4Heroes’ services have upon enabling veterans and their families transition to civilian life and to access the support they need when they leave the armed forces.  We discuss the significance of having a ‘one-stop shop’ or ‘single point of contact’ and the vital role of the Charity’s Armed Forces Mobile Outreach Unit in providing welfare services to veterans, particularly in rural and underserved communities.  Rory also talks about the opportunities presented by the VALOUR project. Rory draws upon his role as a non-executive director at J.R. Rix & Sons to bring a great depth of experience and knowledge to his role as Chair of a dynamic and growing Charity.  Rory gives some great advice to charity trustees and Chairs and his approach to his role at Hull4Heroes.

    Charity podcast - Lisa Dawson

    Gerry Morrison and Harriet Wheeldon, specialist legal advisers in the charities sector speak to Lisa Dawson, CEO of Run With It about how to create a new charity and grow it into a significant service provider. Lisa is an innovative charity leader – just like Andy Barber OBE who we spoke to in episode one.  Lisa took her exciting approach to learning and developed an engaging programme to deliver education in fascinating settings. Imagine learning maths in the real-life context of a football stadium or an airport!  Also finding out about how the stadium and airport operates, not only the pilots and the plane, but the behind the scenes including the catering, the retail, and the operational controls.  All of which opens young people’s eyes to different careers options. A bus has also been ‘wrapped’ with Run With It’s branding to help raise awareness of the charity and its profile.  All fantastic fun, but serious about learning and increasing young people’s life chances. Lisa’s journey from creating a new charity to growing it is inspirational, and her energy and enthusiasm are infectious.  It was a privilege to spend time with Lisa on our podcast.

    Charity podcast - Olly Burdett

    Gerry Morrison and Harriet Wheeldon, specialist legal advisers in the charities sector speak to Olly Burdett, a trustee of the high-profile charity,Tigers Trust about increasing board diversity and how to use positive communication to amplify the charity’s impact. Olly is an expert in marketing and communications and brings his professional knowledge to his role as a trustee. Olly also has a unique insight into the charity having previously been an employee of Tigers Trust and took part in the charity’s workshops when he was at school. Olly has a holistic view of the charity and its mission.  Trustee boards are sometimes criticised by the charity’s employees, service users, and volunteers for appearing disconnected or remote.  Over time the board can also become perceived by those working on the ground as a barrier to getting thework done. Olly talks about how to build strong working relationships between the trustees and the charity’s staff and volunteers and about how he made the transition to charity trustee at a young age.

We find out about how innovation has helped Andy to revitalise trustee boards, restrategise charities that have outlived their original purposes and in successful fundraising. Andy has considerable experience leading charities and brings his considerable knowledge of the voluntary sector to this fantastic discussion about how good governance helps drive a charity forward and build strong relationships between the board of trustees, staff, volunteers, and stakeholders. This podcast is a great prelude to Trustees’ Week 2025, a national celebration of charity trustees who are the voluntary force behind so many great organisations transforming their communities. Being a charity trustee is about so much more than adhering to six main duties - as important as these are.  This podcast aims to combine Gerry’s and Harriet’s knowledge of charity law with Andy’s practical engagement and lived through experience.
