[…] And people in the NYPD were getting shuffled left and right. So that case... ultimately stays open, stays open, but eventually does get solved. And DNA evidence, which was fledgling at the time, but just starting to come into prominence in the late 80s and early 90s, DNA evidence links that rape to Reyes. And they had DNA evidence from the scene of the Trisha Mele rape. But despite the close period of time which these took place, and despite the fact that it was a similar criminal situation, the NYPD does not bother to check the DNA left on Trisha Mealy against Matthias Reyes. And it's not until 2002 that When Reyes ultimately signs an affidavit saying he's the guy who actually did this and he did it by himself and the Central Park Five were not involved. […]
