Subway to Half a Million Pound Agency at 20 |LIVE PODCAST in front of 50 Business Students

Three years ago Owen Clater was making sandwiches at Subway. Today, at 20, he runs Becks & Clates, a marketing and tech agency turning over roughly half a million a year, and he has a stake in eleven other companies on top of that.

In this episode we recorded live in front of a room of students, Owen takes us back to the very beginning. He started his first business at 14, not for money, but because he was sick of feeling embarrassed and wanted to be taken seriously. He borrowed £80 off his dad, launched eleven dropshipping stores, and every single one made nothing. Then came a failed clothing brand. Then a marketing agency that earned zero for its first full year because he did all the work for free to build up case studies.

He is honest about the parts most people hide. Being the shy, skinny kid with acne. The playground moment that made him decide to change. Teaching himself confidence through boxing and the gym. And the make or break point in month thirteen, working a whole year for barely £5,000 profit, right on the edge of quitting, before it suddenly jumped to £60,000 and then £80,000 a month.

Along the way Owen breaks down why your network really is your net worth, how he turned free work into paying clients, why he thinks you need almost no money to start, and the mindset shift he swears by: stop trading your time for money, and start trading your money for other people's time. His closing advice on building a personal brand is worth staying for.

From 5p SIM cards to a £7 Million Carpet business | LIVE PODCAST in front of 50 Business Student

Myles Shaw didn't set out to be an entrepreneur. At 23, with his first child on the way, he just needed to find an extra £100 a week. So he started selling SIM cards on eBay for 5p profit a time. That scrappy hunt for a bit of extra cash became runrug.com, now the world's biggest online seller of made to measure hall and stair carpet runners, and part of a Grimsby flooring group turning over millions. In this episode Myles takes us right back to the beginning: the failed side hustles, getting kicked off eBay, the cease and desist from Mazda, and the moment he sat staring at a roll of carpet in his dad's shop and wondered if anyone would buy it online. He also gets honest about the hard stuff, from working in a family business and the testing relationship with his dad, to making his own brother redundant during COVID.We also dig into how a self taught kid from Grimsby now runs one of the most AI forward small businesses in the country, why he thinks opportunity spotting can't really be taught, and the advice he'd give any young person sitting on an idea. His closing thought on the diamond miner is worth staying for.
