A power plant in Kyiv and energy facilities in Kharkiv came under attack hours later, and Zelensky reported Russian strikes that caused outages.
Off Djibouti
At least 139 people died and another 84 remain missing after a migrant boat capsized off Djibouti, according to the United Nations migration agency. The boat was travelling from Djibouti to Yemen. The dead include 15 children.
Venezuelan corruption charges
Alvaro Pulido Vargas is in U.S. custody on charges tied to two alleged Venezuelan corruption schemes, the Justice Department says. Prosecutors accuse him and associates of bribery and inflated prices on roughly $1.6 billion in government food and medicine contracts. A separate case concerns alleged fraud in a low-income housing program. Prosecutors say both schemes moved money through U.S. banks.

Saudi Arabia says an attack on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Sunday killed a Pakistani national and injured 11 people.

At Yorkshire Wildlife Park
South Yorkshire Police are investigating the death of a man who entered a tiger enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park near Doncaster on Saturday afternoon. Emergency teams could not save him, and specialist officers are supporting his family. Police have urged people not to share videos of the attack. Officers said the tiger remained inside its enclosure and posed no wider risk to the public.
In the Gulf of Oman
U.S. Central Command says an American fighter jet bombed a commercial cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman.
In U.S. news
Four people have died as Isaias brought strong winds and heavy rain across the southeastern United States. The storm made landfall in Destin, in Florida’s Panhandle, on Friday evening as a Category 2 hurricane. It has since weakened into a post-tropical cyclone.
In Erie, Pennsylvania, police are investigating a shooting after eight members of an extended family were found dead in a house on Friday, October 9. The victims included two young children and a heavily pregnant woman. The suspected gunman was also found dead at the house.
U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle faces formal demands for sworn testimony and a call for a federal watchdog investigation. A senior Democrat alleges she requested $100,000 from a political donor to pay personal debts and accepted corporate-funded private jet travel.
In Panama
The government declared a state of emergency on Saturday after Friday’s magnitude-7.7 and 6.6 earthquakes toppled buildings and prompted evacuations. Officials reported damage in all ten provinces and two Indigenous territories, but attributed no deaths to the earthquakes. More than 100 aftershocks were recorded.
In Delhi
A court ordered the release of Cockroach Janta party founder Abhijeet Dipke and two other senior leaders detained ahead of youth protests demanding the resignation of India’s election chief. More than 2,000 people were reportedly detained on Saturday. Protesters planned a second day of demonstrations on Sunday.
In Syria and Gaza
The UN human rights office says it has received allegations that Israeli forces set dogs on Syrian detainees. Forty-nine detainees remain held. In Gaza City, eight-year-old Shahd Abdul-Razzaq al-Najjar was reportedly killed by an Israeli quadcopter drone on the first anniversary of the ceasefire intended to end the war.
In Germany
Former intelligence chief August Hanning has been arrested and charged with treasonous espionage and handing state secrets to a foreign power. He is also accused of exploiting intelligence for private clients. The arrest has prompted calls for intelligence-service reform.

Storms and power outages
Isaias has been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone after hitting the U.S. Gulf Coast as a hurricane, leaving hundreds of thousands without power in Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. AccuWeather forecasts wind and rain across the Philadelphia region on Sunday, with isolated severe storms possible.
In western Sicily, two tornadoes struck Marsala, injuring dozens of people, damaging buildings including a school, and overturning cars.
U.S. elections
A Pew Research poll puts Democrats ahead of Republicans among registered voters on the generic congressional ballot, 44 percent to 36 percent. In Kansas, former Republican governors Mike Hayden and Bill Graves have endorsed Democrat Adam Hamilton against Republican Senator Roger Marshall, the Washington Post reports. Both say Marshall is no longer the right fit for the state.
Election officials in Colorado and Washington state have warned the public about inaccurate voting information from a political action committee tied to Elon Musk, CNN reports. Musk is spending heavily to help Republicans in the midterms.
Also according to CNN, President Trump has asked the Supreme Court to revive his lawsuit against Hillary Clinton and others over the 2016 election. The suit alleged a conspiracy to undermine his campaign by falsely linking him to Russia. A lower court concluded the case was frivolous.
Protest detentions in Delhi
Indian authorities reportedly imposed a severe lockdown in Delhi and detained tens of thousands of people, including the leader of the youth-led Cockroach Janata Party movement. Thousands travelling from across India were blocked from its anti-government demonstration. The movement called the protest over an electoral-roll revision reported to have removed 130 million names.
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor investigation
Thames Valley Police agreed to have search warrants for two of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s properties quashed by the High Court in July 2026. The investigation into alleged misconduct in public office continues. The legal position of material seized during the searches remains unresolved.
Fort Hood execution announcement
CNN reports that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the execution of the convicted Fort Hood mass shooter would be shown publicly. The announcement caught people across the Pentagon and the Army off guard.
Officers shot in Philadelphia
Two police officers were shot early Saturday while responding to a call in West Philadelphia. One was shot 12 times, the other three times.
Russian attack on Zaporizhzhia
A Russian glide bomb attack on Zaporizhzhia killed at least 15 people and destroyed a large apartment block. Authorities say children are among the victims, and more people could still be buried in the rubble.
