On this episode of INside the OUTcomes, we explore an international study (https://www.sralab.org/research/labs/cror/projects/international-exploration-rehabilitation-length-stay-following-spinal-cord-injury) led by Shirley Ryan AbilityLab that examines how inpatient rehabilitation — and key factors such as length of stay, intensity, and more — shapes outcomes for people with spinal cord injury (SCI).
As part of the research, individuals with SCI participated in focus groups to share their firsthand experiences of inpatient rehabilitation.

Health Disparities Among Black Individuals After Amputation
Health outcomes after amputation aren’t the same for everyone — and racial disparities remain a critical issue. Understanding what drives these differences is key to directing resources, improving care and advancing equity.
On this episode of INside the OUTcomes, our guest is Emily Dinelli, PhD, CPO. She is a certified prosthetist orthotist and former graduate student researcher with the Center for Rehabilitation Outcomes Research (https://www.sralab.org/research/labs/cror) at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, where she focused on employment and outcomes for people with physical disabilities.
Her research explores how unmet needs — such as access to healthcare, resources and support — are linked to comorbidities, complications and mortality among Black individuals who have had an amputation. She also studies how a more coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to care can help address those gaps.

Cancer Rehabilitation
On this episode of INside the OUTcomes, we shine the spotlight on an important and rapidly evolving field in healthcare: cancer rehabilitation.
Following a cancer diagnosis, patients often develop neurological, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular and other impairments caused by the disease and its aggressive treatments. In fact, more than 8 million cancer survivors experience functional limitations. Fortunately, cancer rehabilitation can help patients maintain and/or restore their function and quality of life.

Samman Shahpar, MD (https://www.sralab.org/clinicians/samman-shahpar-md), is section chief of cancer rehabilitation at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. He has dedicated his career to changing the culture of cancer care and has extensive experience in assessing and treating cancer survivors of all diagnoses.
Ishan Roy, MD, PhD (https://www.sralab.org/clinicians/ishan-roy-md-phd), is an attending physician and research scientist at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. He specializes in cancer rehabilitation and the study of cachexia — a muscle-wasting syndrome that affects nearly half of all patients with cancer and contributes to weight and muscle loss, weakness and fatigue.
