From Rocket Science to Digital Trust

Modern society increasingly relies on complex connected systems, raising fundamental questions about how trust can be established and maintained when technology becomes too intricate for any single person to fully comprehend. To ensure dependability, organizations must look beyond mere documentation and instead focus on practical reliability, meaningful transparency, and layered governance that shields everyday citizens from administrative burdens. Furthermore, because failures are inevitable, truly resilient systems must anticipate disruptions by incorporating robust fallback procedures, clear lines of accountability, and fair methods of redress for affected users. Ultimately, true confidence in technology is earned continuously through evidence-based testing, proactive risk management, and proportional safeguards that guarantee systems remain safe, understandable, and accountable when people need them most.

The true potential lies in empowering individuals with portable credentials, enhanced privacy, and cross-border functionality rather than merely satisfying basic operational requirements. Policymakers and industry stakeholders must look beyond launch day to foster genuine innovation and rebuild enthusiasm for transformative digital infrastructure. Ultimately, getting the first products on the market should serve as a stepping stone toward a much broader, highly ambitious digital future.

We are told that AI will take every job, destroy democracy, make independent thought impossible, or even threaten humanity itself. Some of these concerns deserve serious attention. Others resemble earlier technology panics around the internet, eCommerce, cloud computing and digital identity: important transitions framed as existential threats before society had properly understood the benefits, the limits and the required safeguards.
