Building control, the Building Safety Act and the road ahead
<p>After discussing the teeth of the Building Safety Act in episode one, its bite in episode two, we take time to digest what we now know and just how we are preparing for the future.</p> <p>On the spot in this episode are Matt Shum and Dave Aitchison who discuss competence and accountability in building control, key timescales, frameworks, the building inspector classes and how you can respond positively to the changes ahead.</p> <p><strong>Matt Shum</strong> has been an assistant through to area surveyor before moving on to specialist, regulatory and research roles. <p>Welcome to<strong><em> InSite Invites</em></strong> – a brand new podcast dedicated to keeping you informed, engaged and up-to-date on the key issues our industry faces.</p> <p>In this three-part series, we will hear from a range of experts as we discuss the Building Safety Act, its scope and just how it will affect you.</p> <p>In this episode we welcome two leading industry experts to explain what’s in the Act and what it means for those who develop, own and manage buildings that fall within its scope. </p> <p><strong>Peter Dawber</strong> chaired the working group on site supervisors as part of the work to improve competence in the industry in the wake of the Grenfell Tower fire, and was subsequently appointed to lead the development of a new competency standard for Principal Contractors as part of the BSI’s national standards programme. He is currently a member of the Interim Industry Competence Committee which is advising the Building Safety Regulator, and chairs its Capacity and Capability sub-committee.</p> <p><strong>Paul Nash </strong>is a Past President of the Chartered Institute of Building and chaired the working group on procurement as part of the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety led by Dame Judith Hackitt. He has been a member of the Industry Safety Steering Group since 2018 and was recently appointed to the Building Advisory Committee, which advises the Building Safety Regulator on safety and standards.</p>
