#53: Intermediate: If Your Friend Were a Narcissist
<p>Imagine you have a friend who always wants to be the star of the show. Wherever you go, whatever you do, they manage to turn every conversation back to themselves. At first, it might seem like they just have a lot of exciting stories to share, but over time, you start noticing that everything is always about them. This could be a sign that your friend might be a narcissist.</p><p>Narcissism is a personality trait characterized by an inflated sense of one's own importance, a deep need for excessive attention and admiration, coupled with a lack of empathy for others. But beyond these textbook definitions, how does it really feel to be around someone like that?</p><p>Let's say you're planning a group trip. A friend who is a narcissist might insist on deciding the destination and activities based on their preferences alone, without considering what anyone else wants. They might dominate conversations, talking at length about their achievements and experiences, often exaggerating their importance. When things go wrong, they might be quick to blame others, unable to accept any fault.</p><p>You might think, "So what? They just like attention." But over time, this behavior can be draining. A recent survey by a leading psychology magazine found that people who have friends with narcissistic traits feel less satisfied in their friendships and often feel emotionally exhausted.</p><p>So, what should you do if you think a friend might be a narcissist? First, it's important to set boundaries. Decide what behaviors you can tolerate and be clear about your limits. For example, you might decide that you won't listen to them brag for hours, and you'll kindly change the subject or excuse yourself when this starts.</p><p>Communicating your feelings can also help. Narcissists are not great at picking up on others' discomfort or disinterest. If you feel up to it, telling your friend how their behavior affects you can be a good step. Say something like, "I feel unheard when we talk because our conversations mostly focus on your experiences and achievements."</p><p>But what if nothing changes? Sometimes, maintaining a friendship with a narcissist can become too challenging, especially if they are not open to feedback or dismiss your feelings. In such cases, it might be necessary to take a step back from the friendship or even end it to preserve your own emotional well-being.</p><p>This doesn't mean you have to cut off all contact immediately. Each situation is unique, and sometimes, especially if other friends or activities are involved, you might choose to slowly distance yourself rather than making a dramatic exit.</p><p>It's also worth considering why narcissists act the way they do. Often, their behavior stems from a place of insecurity and deep-seated fear of not being good enough. While this doesn't excuse their actions, understanding this can sometimes help you handle the situation with a bit more empathy and patience.</p><p>Dealing with a narcissistic friend is no small task. It requires a balance of empathy, assertiveness, and sometimes, the hard decision to walk away.
