Across the Fault Line: The Personal and Professional Life of a Social Worker

In this episode, PJ steps back into his first UK job a youth program built from pizza‑fuelled consultations, brave young voices, and a community that learned to speak for itself. Social Work and the Patterns We Miss: A Domestic Violence Case Reflection

In this episode, I revisit a domestic and family violence case from early in my career a case that revealed how easily social workers can follow a familiar pattern, only to realise too late that it doesn’t fit the family in front of us.

What looked like progress on the surface engagement, rapport, referrals was masking a deeper pattern of coercive control I didn’t yet have the lens to recognise. The subtle cues were there, long before I was ready to see them. A conversation at the UK border about Baby P, the dynamics inside the home, the avoidance, the silence all of it was pointing to something I didn’t yet understand.

This episode explores how using the “right” tools in the wrong sequence can place more risk on a family than safety, and how critical incidents can reshape our practice in ways we don’t fully grasp until years later. It’s a reflection on missed signs, early‑career assumptions, and the importance of recognising patterns in behaviour, in families, and in ourselves.

If this story resonates, follow the podcast for more reflective practice episodes, and join me on Instagram for weekly reflections and behind‑the‑scenes moments from Intrusive Kindness.

The Closure Myth: Why Social Work Stories Don’t End When We Do

In this episode, PJ takes you inside his first UK social work role a program dropped into an organisation without instructions, scaffolding or structure. What began as “building a service” quickly became a lesson in how systems shape us, how we default to what we know, and why the myth of closure is one of the most powerful illusions in our profession. From learning a new landscape to discovering the quiet truth that families’ stories continue long after our involvement ends, this episode explores the messy, human side of practice that rarely gets talked about.
