Born and raised in Calgary, Shaykh Iqbal initially pursued higher education at the University of Calgary before dedicating himself full-time to Islamic studies due to his profound love for his faith. His Islamic educational journey began locally with the memorization of the Qur’an and continued in Cape Town, South Africa. There, he completed a six-year intensive program at Dār al-Ulūm al-‘Arabiyyah al-Islāmiyyah, graduating with ‘Alimiyyah in Islamic Studies. This rigorous training provided him with a deep understanding of Islamic sciences, including Arabic, Tafsir, Hadith, and Fiqh. Upon returning to Calgary, Shaykh Iqbal has been actively involved in the local Muslim community. He served as the Imam of Calgary Islamic Centre – SW Masjid, and taught advanced Islamic sciences with the Al-Ansaar Foundation. He has also led tour groups to the Islamic sacred sites of Makkah and Madinah and served as the principal of the Islamic Centre of South Calgary’s Weekend Qur’ān School. Currently, Shaykh Iqbal is the resident Imam of NW Islamic Centre/Ranchlands Musallah with the Islamic Association of Northwest Calgary, the same masjid he frequented during his youth. He has been delivering Friday (Jumu’ah) sermons in Calgary for six years, alternating between NW Islamic Centre and Maryam Masjid. In addition to his Islamic work, Shaykh Iqbal holds a diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology from SAIT. His interests include Computer-Aided Design (CAD), aviation, archery, ice hockey, and spending quality time with his family. He remains committed to public speaking and community service, contributing to both the Muslim and broader communities in Calgary.
