How valued is job experience when applying for jobs in cyber security?

👁🗨 Iris - https://lnkd.in/ePyyhrM 👁🗨

The value of experience is not an overlooked factor, in fact it is on of the the leading reasons why individuals tend to stray away from the field entirely. More than 67% of established industry veterans claim that IT experience is CRITICAL to being even a thought in a cyber security recruitment space, and while I don't necessarily disagree I do on the other hand have a bit more of an open mind to what experience could be perceived as on a resume.

When you hear the words IT experience you probably think about JOB experience, but when I hear those words I think of (and you should too!) certifications, home projects and labs, internships, and so many more valuable substitutes for experience. Certifications are the number one priority if you have yet to get a degree in a tech field, even if you have a degree completing a few certs can help you stand out as a determined individual.

Home labs and other projects may not be something that comes to mind when thinking about what to put on a resume but a ton of employers that I've had the pleasurer of interacting with have said that they LOVE seeing home labs displayed on a resume. It shows a real passion for the field as well as a certain amount of technical problem solving. So especially if you're fresh and new to the field make sure to just create and explore, that's what the industry is all about after all.

One last thing, and this applies to every single industry that you may stumble across in your lifetime, don't do it for the money or you'll get burnt out by your second year. The choice to advance into cyber security should be made by passion not greed. Burnout really isn't even a term that should be used anymore, instead think of it as an indicator to try something new! Always keep advancing and prospering in whatever field that you find is the best fit for you.
