Marv speaks with Matt Watts, a documentarian and podcaster based in Nottingham, United Kingdom. The theme of this episode is about slow and intentional media consumption in an internet that optimises for doomscrolling and outrage.
Matt's documentary Follow the Stickers and his podcast Watts on Your Screen share the same DNA. He finds an overlooked thing, talks to the people behind it, and resists the urge to explain it to death. Our conversation also covers surveillance, misogyny on the internet, the collapse of local journalism, and a deeply interesting project involving a year's worth of videos almost no one watched.
Follow the Stickers was a part of Matt's master's degree in documentary journalism, and while it wasn't what the programme wanted, it's found an audience on YouTube. This set him on a path of telling stories he's passionate about, often local and personal. His polished production quality makes each of his monthly episodes a real treat to listen to.
We touched on big stories like AI and the death of local news from the perspectives of people who love art and want a connection with those in our orbit.

This hands-on knowledge is what's important, because this is a counter to a lot of the AI hype you'll see and hear online. We get into practical automation that small and medium businesses can benefit from, while learning how to evaluate AI tools against real problems.
Matt has been online since before most people had a computer. From bulletin board systems in the early 90s to contractor stints at Intel and Nike during the dot-com gold rush, he has watched every technology wave arrive, get overhyped, and settle into something more ordinary. That experience gives him a more grounded read on AI than most people currently shouting about it.
The episode also gets into the marketing fundamentals that most businesses get wrong: the curse of knowledge, why you are not your customer, and why Web3 has always had a messaging problem that has nothing to do with the technology itself.

Marv speaks with Josh Davila, author, podcaster, and co-founder of Bread Cooperative, about what it actually looks like when technology is built around people rather than profit. The conversation covers cooperative ownership in practice, why losing access to your bank account is a real and growing threat, and why the anxiety most people feel about AI might be aimed at the wrong target.
Josh's podcast, The Blockchain Socialist, and his book Blockchain Radicals, both counter the perspective of crypto being a tool for personal enrichment, while holding space for the very real criticisms the industry deserves. They provide a framework for thinking about how crypto can live up to its promise of helping people. These foundations are put in place at Bread Cooperative, and the episode gets into what shared ownership of a company actually feels like from the inside.
While Bread Cooperative shows how systems can be built according to one's values, the question of AI is a lot less settled. Josh talks about his current open-source AI stack, the allure of frontier models, and what responsible AI use may one day look like.
