Isaiah 57:14-21 calls a backslidden people to prepare the way back to God by removing every obstruction. In Isaiah's day the obstruction was idolatry. The human heart still makes idols of family, career, and settled church habits, and sin stands in the way above all. Christ, who is himself the way, removes that obstacle. The Holy One who inhabits eternity dwells with the contrite and lowly, a spirit the Holy Spirit creates in the new birth, as Psalm 51 and James 4 also teach. God sees the backslider's ways and promises to heal, lead, and restore him, speaking peace to the far and the near, Gentiles and Jews alike (Ephesians 2:17-18). The wicked, like the tossing sea, find no rest. Christ calms the guilty conscience and gives rest to the weary.

A Monument, a Name, and a Place for the Outsider
Isaiah 56 promises the foreigner and the eunuch, outsiders under the old covenant, a monument and an everlasting name in God's house when they join themselves to the Lord and keep his Sabbaths. The Sabbath is both a creation ordinance binding on all people and a covenant sign that pictures resting in Christ alone, and the Lord's Day still orders the rhythm of a believer's week. Race, ancestry, marital status and the ability to have children exclude no one from Christ's kingdom; only unbelief and impenitence do. The Lord declares that he will gather yet others besides the outcasts of Israel, Philip's baptism of the Ethiopian eunuch shows the promise fulfilled, and the church in this age of ingathering faces outward.

God’s Effective Word
As rain and snow water the earth and bring forth seed for the sower and bread for the eater, God's word goes out from his mouth and accomplishes what he purposes; it never returns to him empty. The word often works slowly and beneath the surface. It brings the elect to conversion and growth, and it confirms the impenitent in the hardness they choose, as Paul calls the gospel a fragrance from life to life and from death to death. That confidence should make the church bold in evangelism when its witness seems to fall on deaf ears. Verses 12 and 13 picture the exiles' joyful return and point beyond it to the new creation Christ secures, where cypress and myrtle replace thorn and briar as an everlasting sign for the Lord's name.
