The Quran and the Giants of American Literature I Jeffrey Einboden interview (Part 2)

In Part 2, Professor Jeffrey Einboden, author of The Islamic Lineage of American Literary Culture, explores the forgotten connections between Islam, the Qur’an, Sufism, and American literature—from Thomas Jefferson and Ezra Stiles to Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Washington Irving, and Edgar Allan Poe. We uncover remarkable stories: Emerson’s fascination with Hafez and Sufi poetry; Poe’s use of Qur’anic and Islamic imagery; Washington Irving’s encounter with Muslim Spain and his biography of the Prophet Muhammad; Yale president Ezra Stiles studying Arabic and the Qur’an; and Unitarian minister William Bentley exchanging Arabic letters and books with a Yemeni merchant. The conversation also reveals surprising connections between Harvard, Yale, Unitarianism, Transcendentalism, the Alhambra, abolitionism, the Civil War, and your Mocha coffee! Together, these stories challenge a familiar picture of American literary history and reveal an Islamic lineage hiding in plain sight.

Jefferson's Muslim Fugitives I Jeffrey Einboden interview (Part 1)

📚 SIGNED BOOK GIVEAWAY To celebrate my new conversation with Professor Jeffrey Einboden, I’m giving away three signed copies of his remarkable book, Jefferson’s Muslim Fugitives: The Lost Story of Enslaved Africans, Their Arabic Letters, and an American President. For giveaway details and how to enter, visit my Substack: https://islamandtheideaofamerica.substack.com/ What was the mysterious code that Thomas Jefferson tried—and failed—to decipher? In 1807, two Arabic manuscripts written by enslaved Muslim fugitives from western Kentucky reached Thomas Jefferson. He recognized their importance, but he could not read them—and their story remained hidden for more than two centuries. In this episode of Islam and the Idea of America, I speak with Professor Jeffrey Einboden, author of Jefferson’s Muslim Fugitives: The Lost Story of Enslaved Africans, Their Arabic Letters, and an American President, about this extraordinary discovery and the forgotten history it reveals. What do these manuscripts tell us about Islam, slavery, literacy, religious freedom, race, and the meaning of America? ⏱️ Timestamps 00:00 The Code Jefferson Couldn’t Decipher 05:42 Enslaved Muslims as Writers, Scholars & Theologians 10:58 The Earliest Arabic Muslim Writings in America 16:35 Muslim Writings “Hidden in Plain Sight” in American Archives 27:29 Discovering Jefferson’s Lost Arabic Manuscripts 32:30 Jefferson, Islam & Religious Freedom: From the Qur’an to the Treaty of Tripoli Our conversation explores: • The mysterious Arabic manuscripts that reached Thomas Jefferson in 1807 • Enslaved Muslims as writers, scholars, theologians, and intellectuals in early America • Why so many Muslim slave writings remained hidden in American archives • The role of Arabic literacy and Islamic intellectual traditions in early American history • The Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom and Jefferson's reference to “Mohammedans” • The Qur'an and Jefferson's educational vision for the University of Virginia • A newly recovered Arabic version of the Treaty of Tripoli and what it reveals about mutual dignity and religious respect • Islam, slavery, race, liberty, literacy, and human dignity in the early United States • How archival discoveries can reshape our understanding of American history Professor Einboden's research reveals a striking paradox: some of the most important Arabic writings of enslaved Muslims were not necessarily lost—they were hidden in plain sight, preserved in the archives of America's most celebrated institutions and political figures. Join us for this fascinating conversation about Jefferson’s Muslim Fugitives and the forgotten Muslim presence in early American history. The Hidden Story Behind Europe's Greatest Utopias

In this episode, we explore how Hayy ibn Yaqzan by the Andalusian philosopher Ibn Tufail traveled across Renaissance Europe, influencing religious reformers, political philosophers, utopian writers, and some of the most important intellectual movements in Western history. Long before writing Utopia, Thomas More encountered the story of Hayy ibn Yaqzan through the writings of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola. Scholars have noted striking similarities between Hayy ibn Yaqzan and More's vision of an ideal society founded on education, reason, and the pursuit of truth. We also examine Tommaso Campanella's The City of the Sun, its surprising parallels with Ottoman society, and the extraordinary story of Campanella's attempt to secure Ottoman military support for a revolution against Spanish rule in southern Italy. This episode explores the hidden intellectual connections linking: • Hayy ibn Yaqzan (Ibn Tufail) • Islamic philosophy and Renaissance Europe • The Quakers and the Inner Light • Mary Fisher and Sultan Mehmed IV • George Keith and Robert Barclay • Thomas More and Utopia • Tommaso Campanella and The City of the Sun • Francis Bacon and New Atlantis • The Ottoman Empire and European utopian thought • Daniel Defoe and Robinson Crusoe • Letters Written by a Turkish Spy • The intellectual origins of the Enlightenment If you enjoy intellectual history, the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, Islamic philosophy, Ottoman history, political thought, and the forgotten connections that shaped the modern world, consider subscribing for future episodes. #HayyibnYaqzan #Islam #Enlightenment #JohnLocke #ThomasJefferson #americanhistory #america250 #OttomanEmpire #Quran #HistoryPodcast #PoliticalPhilosophy #ReligiousToleration #Orientalism #DeepDive #islamandtheideaofamerica #History #IntellectualHistory #IslamicHistory #HayyIbnYaqzan #IbnTufail #ThomasMore #Utopia #campanella #CityOfTheSun #OttomanEmpire #Quakers #Renaissance #Enlightenment #DanielDefoe #RobinsonCrusoe 🎵 Credits (Music Tracks) The background music licensed via Async, June 20, 2026 & July 8, 2026: Eternal Mountain – License Code: OAQDZHBNDWC3DEDS The Search – License Code: QOCJ0S0WX6DCO903 Safflower – License Code: P8QVCEDL4RHEOBHA Historique – License Code: A6CGJ9GFWEOIJJFK No Fear – License Code: XLV08QO8KYUAI857 Mistletoe Farms – License Code: AJLOJ2ECX5XIUMKQ Crescendo – License Code: HYFXOTDCZ4BIWTRF Edge of Victory – License Code: LKIEUI8DCQO29SZ4 The Enemy Within – License Code: OZHUFCPX6DVZDI9I The Lost Temple – License Code: XBUFLPT39Q8T69K3 Soul Knots – License Code: PP0EZUQVUXKWTSZI Platform 314 – License Code: LHHIFM8CEGTRFQ9D It's used under active Async Pro subscription, royalty-free with proper license documentation on file. The Enlightenment’s Surprising View of Muhammad | Prof. John Tolan

How did European debates about Islam shape the intellectual world that eventually influenced the American Revolution? Sometimes he was portrayed as a heretic or impostor. At other times he appeared as a lawgiver, reformer, or even a hero. But why did these portrayals change so dramatically? In this conversation, we explore how Christians, Enlightenment thinkers, revolutionaries, and even Napoleon used Islam as a mirror to debate their own societies: • How Protestants and Catholics used Islam against each other during the Reformation • The surprising role Islam played in the political debates of Revolutionary England • Why Enlightenment thinkers began to portray Muhammad as a hero and lawgiver • The strange story of Napoleon celebrating the Prophet’s birthday in Egypt • Whether Enlightenment discussions of Islam influenced ideas that later shaped the American Revolution • How Jewish Enlightenment thinkers engaged with Islamic history This episode reveals a forgotten intellectual history: Europe’s long fascination with Islam — a story full of fear, admiration, polemic, and philosophical curiosity. Rather than a simple clash of civilizations, the history of Europe and Islam is a history of mirrors, debates, and shared intellectual worlds. The Untold Story: How Islam Shaped the English Enlightenment I Deep Dive Talk #2

In this Deep Dive conversation, Dr. Zulfiqar Ali Shah explores how Islamic thought, texts, and intellectual traditions shaped the English Enlightenment—not at the margins, but at its very core. Drawing on his book Islam and the English Enlightenment: The Untold Story, Dr. Shah challenges the idea that the Enlightenment was a purely European or secular achievement. Instead, he reveals a forgotten world of translation, encounter, and intellectual exchange—where English theologians, philosophers, and dissenters engaged Islamic philosophy, Qur’anic monotheism, and Muslim critiques of Trinitarian orthodoxy as they wrestled with questions of reason, toleration, and religious authority. We discuss how Arabic and Islamic learning entered England through travel, diplomacy, and scholarship; why Islam became such a powerful reference point in English religious debates; and how engagement with Muslim thought helped early Enlightenment figures loosen the grip of scholasticism and inherited dogma—often at significant personal risk. 👇 Join the conversationFree subscribers to the Islam and the Idea of America community on Substack receive bonus content, behind-the-scenes insights, and visual resources inspired by each episode. 📜 Episode transcripts and scholarly citations are available on Substack:https://islamandtheideaofamerica.subs... 📸 Instagram:  / islam_and_theideaofamerica   📌 In this episode: Why the English Enlightenment cannot be understood without IslamHow Islamic monotheism resonated with English dissentersThe role of Arabic philosophy, science, and theology in shaping empiricism and reasonHow engagement with Islam fueled debates over toleration, conscience, and natural religionWhy Enlightenment “secularization” often emerged through theological struggle—not the rejection of faithWhat this connected history means for how we understand modern Western and American thought ⏱️ Chapters / Timestamps 00:00 — Why the English Enlightenment needs a global history 07:02 — What we miss when Islam is excluded from Enlightenment narratives 13:57 — Arabic learning, translation, and intellectual exchange 25:55 — Alchemy, Islam, and the Birth of Natural Philosophy 34:48 — Was the Enlightenment really “secular”? 42:56 — English Unitarians and Republican Revolutions in France and America 55:42 — Final reflections: recovering a connected EnlightenmentThis episode is part of Islam and the Idea of America, a podcast exploring how Islamic ideas and encounters helped shape the modern West—and the intellectual foundations of America. 📚 Featured works: Zulfiqar Ali Shah, Islam and the English Enlightenment: The Untold Story https://www.amazon.com/Islam-English-... Zulfiqar Ali Shah, St. Thomas Aquinas and Muslim Thought https://www.amazon.com/St-Thomas-Aqui... Zulfiqar Ali Shah, Islam's Reformation of Christianityhttps://www.amazon.com/Islams-Reforma... 🔔 Subscribe for future Deep Dives on history of ideas, translation networks, Islamic philosophy, early modern dissent, and the long afterlife of Enlightenment debates. ▶️ Watch / Listen / Subscribe (all links):https://linktr.ee/islamandtheideaofam... #Islam #Enlightenment #JohnLocke #ThomasJefferson #americanhistory #america250 #OttomanEmpire #Quran #HistoryPodcast #PoliticalPhilosophy #ReligiousToleration #Orientalism #DeepDive #islamandtheideaofamerica 🎵 Credits (Music Tracks) The background music licensed via Podcastle, February 7, 2026: Eternal Mountain – License Code: D68KZXVTQS5BKXTA It's used under active Podcastle Pro subscription, royalty-free with proper license documentation on file. Newton's Secret Faith: Islam and the Lost History of Enlightenment

Isaac Newton was not the deist Enlightenment myth made him out to be. In this episode, we uncover Newton’s secret theology—his fascination with monotheism, ancient wisdom, alchemy, and the hidden networks that shaped modern science. When we think of Isaac Newton, we imagine gravity, motion, and the birth of modern science. But hidden behind his public achievements was a private world of forbidden theology, ancient wisdom, and secret manuscripts—kept silent for nearly 300 years. In this episode, we follow Newton’s hidden intellectual trail: • His belief in a pure, original monotheism • The influence of Arabic scholarship at Oxford and Cambridge • Rosicrucians, alchemy, and the “Invisible College” • Why Enlightenment thinkers later misrepresented Newton as a mechanistic deist Drawing on recent historical research, we reveal how Newton saw science and faith not as rivals—but as two paths to the same divine truth. This story also sets the stage for the next episode: how Socinian/Unitarian ideas traveled from Newton and Locke into the heart of America’s founding vision. 📌 This is not the Enlightenment story you were taught. Islam and the English Enlightenment: A Conversation with Professor Humberto Garcia

In this Deep Dive conversation, Prof. Humberto Garcia (University of California, Merced) explains how Islam shaped the English Enlightenment—not as a side story, but as a missing link in debates about toleration, republicanism, secular governance, and liberty. We discuss Garcia’s groundbreaking book Islam and the English Enlightenment (2012) and trace the underground world of manuscript culture where radical Protestant dissenters read the Qur’an, debated the Trinity, and imagined “Protestant Muhammad” as a political symbol—often while facing real danger under blasphemy laws. 👇 Join the conversation Free subscribers to the Islam and the Idea of America community on Substack will receive enriching bonus content, behind-the-scenes insights, and visual resources inspired by each episode. 📜 Episode transcripts and scholarly citations are also available on Substack: https://islamandtheideaofamerica.substack.com 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/islam_and_theideaofamerica/ 📌 In this episode: * Why the Ottoman Empire became a model (and “beating stick”) in England’s internal fights over monarchy, church power, and pluralism * How Henry Stubbe, John Locke, John Toland, and Deists/Socinians/Unitarians/Quakers engaged Islam in the 1600s * Why the Turkish Spy Letters mattered as a fictional vehicle for radical ideas—and why they were read for centuries * How the Siege of Vienna (1683) complicates the “clash of civilizations” narrative * Why Enlightenment “secularization” was often shaped through religious debate, not the rejection of religion * Thomas Jefferson’s Qur’an (George Sale translation) and the idea of Muhammad as lawgiver—and how these debates echo into modern America (including Keith Ellison’s 2006 ceremonial oath) This episode is part of Islam and the Idea of America, a podcast exploring how Islamic ideas and encounters helped shape the modern West—and America’s founding debates. 📚 Featured works Humberto Garcia, Islam and the English Enlightenment, 1670-1840 https://www.amazon.com/English-Enlightenment-1670-1840-Humberto-Garcia/dp/1421403536/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0 Denise A. Why Islam and the Idea of America: The Untold Story of a Shared Civilization

Welcome to the launch of Islam and the Idea of America! In this first episode, we explore why this journey matters — why Islam’s intellectual legacy is central, not peripheral, to the story of Western and American ideas. From the Enlightenment to early colonial America, we uncover how Islamic thought helped shape the ideals of liberty, reason, and universal human dignity. Teaching at American University for over a decade, I’ve witnessed how students of all backgrounds light up when discovering the forgotten connections between Islam and the Western intellectual tradition. From John Locke to Thomas Jefferson, Lady Mary Montagu to William Blake, these dialogues reveal that modernity was never born in isolation — it was shared, translated, and co-created. If you’ve ever questioned the “Clash of Civilizations” narrative, this podcast is your invitation to a different conversation — one that refuses the false binary of East vs West and instead tells the story of a shared civilization. In this episode we: • Re-examine Samuel Huntington’s “Clash of Civilizations” thesis and argue that the real counter-narrative is not simply dialogue of civilizations, but refusing the myth of a fixed West vs. East divide. • Explore Edward Said’s critique of Orientalism and highlight a far less familiar genealogy of Islam’s influence in Western thought. • Introduce the framework of our journey in the upcoming The Stories Untold episodes. 🔔 Subscribe & Join the Journey Join the Islam and the Idea of America community for more enriching content, behind-the-scenes insights, and visual resources inspired by each episode. 📜 Episode transcripts and scholarly citations are also available on Substack. 📩 Substack: https://islamandtheideaofamerica.substack.com 📸 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/islam_and_theideaofamerica?igsh=MWlqNzdrbW9nNGs4cQ%3D%3D&utm_source=qr If you found this episode useful, please like, comment on what you found most surprising, and share with friends. ⏱️ Timestamps 00:00 – Why “Islam and the Idea of America”? 01:16 – Huntington, Said & the Myth of East vs West 03:53 – Islam’s Overlooked Role in Western Thought 05:35 – What’s Next in Our Journey #IslamAndTheIdeaOfAmerica #AmericanIntellectualHistory #IslamicInfluence#SharedCivilization #ClashOfCivilizations #EastAndWest 🎵 Credits (Music Tracks) • Eternal Mountain — licensed via Podcastle | License Code: L7WZN8SN3TVRJB4J | Nov 8 2025 • The Coming War — licensed via Podcastle | License Code: A9SV4OLFRGNE7UOE | Nov 8 2025 • If Time Could Stay — licensed via Podcastle | License Code: U0U6OM1DFOTRK5WL | Nov 8 2025 • Imminent Danger — licensed via Podcastle | License Code: 76SYUYJTTUKLPOYV | Nov 8 2025 About the Channel:Islam and the Idea of America explores how Islamic thought helped shape the moral and intellectual foundations of the modern West — from Jefferson’s Qur’an to Emerson’s Sufi writings. 🎧 Podcast • 📜 Substack • 🎥 Documentary Series © 2025 Islam and the Idea of America.
