If Everyone Gets to Use the Future, Who Gets to Own It?
Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg have very different visions of what AI will do to society. Gates worries that AI could transform work faster than society can adapt. Zuckerberg argues that powerful AI should be distributed broadly, putting personal superintelligence in the hands of individuals rather than governments or a few powerful institutions.
Both visions assume that AI could produce extraordinary abundance. But there’s a question neither fully answers:
If everyone gets to use the future, who gets to own it?
In this episode, I look at Gates and Zuckerberg alongside questions raised by Marx, Shoshana Zuboff, and my own work on embodied steering and human-machine interaction. What happens when access to technology is widely distributed but ownership of the infrastructure remains concentrated? And what happens when the machines aren't simply tools we use, but systems that learn us, adapt to us, and potentially shape us in return?
This isn't an argument that AI is inevitably good or bad. It's an attempt to slow down long enough to ask who controls the machinery, who benefits from the abundance, and what happens to the human beings living inside the system
