70. What Teenagers Can Teach Us About Behaviour with Jess Tyrrell
In this episode of It Starts With YOU, Vic O'Farrell is joined by Jessica Tyrrell to explore what teenagers can teach us about behaviour, communication and the importance of feeling seen and heard.
Jess has spent much of her career working with teenagers, helping to create cultures where young people feel a sense of belonging and have the space to express themselves. But as Vic and Jess discover, many of the lessons she has learned from teenagers apply just as much to adults, parents, teachers and leaders.
They explore why curiosity can be far more powerful than judgement, the tension between fixed and growth mindsets, why allowing people to make mistakes matters, and how simply creating the right conditions for someone to feel heard can transform a relationship.
The conversation also turns to education, school refusal, AI and a future where the skills young people need may look very different from those previous generations were taught.
From parenting teenagers to leading teams, this episode is a reminder that better behaviour often starts with listening, staying curious and being willing to see the world from somebody else's point of view.

About the Guest
Jess Tyrrell is an advisor on behaviour change across schools, families, and organisations. Rather than focusing on what's going wrong, she works backwards from what you want to see more of—and then designs the conditions that make it easier and more rewarding. She understands the systemic patterns underneath, spots what's already working, and builds from there. Her approach removes the heavy hand of correction, making the shift light and playful.

69. Want Your Team to Take Ownership? Stop Taking It Back - Solo Episode
In this solo episode of It Starts With YOU, Vic O'Farrell asks a question many managers have probably found themselves asking: "Why does everything always come back to me?"
You want your team to take more responsibility. You delegate. You hand something over. And then… they don't do it the way you would.
So you step back in.
Using a very relatable example involving a badly loaded dishwasher, Vic explores the difference between genuinely giving someone ownership and simply expecting them to repeat your way of doing things.
If the process matters, explain the standards and, importantly, explain why. But if the end result is what matters, sometimes good leadership means stepping away and letting people find their own way there.
Because if you continually take work back, redo it or correct people simply because they approached it differently, eventually they'll stop stepping up altogether.
A short episode about delegation, responsibility, trust and learning when to simply let it go.

68. Why Small Gestures Have a Bigger Impact Than You Think | David Parr
In this episode of It Starts With YOU, Vic O'Farrell is joined by David Parr, co-founder of PRSNT, a business built around a simple idea: making generosity easier in a digital world.
David shares how PRSNT grew from noticing a gap in the way we use technology to connect with each other, and why the emotional value of a small gift can far outweigh what it actually costs. From sending someone a coffee at exactly the right moment to a parent making sure their children can get home safely, they explore what generosity tells us about human behaviour at its best.
The conversation also takes them behind the scenes of David's appearance on Dragon's Den, including the fear, preparation and assumptions that came before stepping into the Den, and why having solid evidence to fall back on mattered when the pressure was on.
Vic and David also explore our tendency to react before we think, the power of creating space between emotion and action, and why simply naming what you're feeling can help stop a difficult moment escalating.

22. How DISC Profiling Enhances Communication with Rob May, Rikki Arundel & Ross Abbate
Published 6 Nov 2024 · Transcript excerpt
[…] And this is why we get stuck. And yeah, absolutely transformational. So in terms of red and blue, what does that mean? So for the people that are listening, that are thinking, oh, what does that mean? What do you need and what did she need? So what that means, I, I tend to, there's two things. I speak to think is one aspect to it. Whereas Sally is a blue, as a, as a sea on the disk profile. Sally has to think to think she has to take time and, and to process. But the other thing is if you want me to make a decision, what I want is highlighted bullet points. And I'll give you a gut feeling response. […]
