Welcome to It’s Not That Deep! We are your favorite mother-daughter podcast where nothing is too awkward, off-limits, or serious for long. From crushes and red flags to fashion fails, friend drama, and the chaos of growing up in different generations, we say what everyone’s thinking… out loud.
Each episode is part laughs, part real talk, and part “did we really just admit that?” Whether we’re debating dating rules, roasting old outfits, or giving advice we learned the hard way, one thing stays the same: life is messy, funny, and usually not that deep.
This Is A Package Deal | It's Not That Deep Ep. 10
Host Edie Thompson interviews guest AD about Gen Z fashion marketing, future career paths, and navigating independence, offering insights into personal growth and societal trends.

Boredom Is the Devil’s Playground | It's Not That Deep Ep. 09
This episode starts with a simple question… and turns into a full breakdown of how we actually operate as a mom and daughter.
We get into what stress really looks like in our house, why every trip somehow turns into an argument, and the ongoing battle between being “prepared” versus just figuring it out as you go. From packing lists to GPA pressure to table manners, it becomes very clear that we see the world in completely different ways and surprisingly similar as well.
But underneath all of that, we’re talking about something bigger.
What is a parent actually responsible for? Is it raising a good student, or raising a functional adult? And where do emotions fit into all of that? We get into independence, self-reliance, oldest daughter pressure, and whether talking about your feelings actually helps… or just makes things worse.
It’s honest, a little tense at times, and one of those conversations where you realize you’re both right… just in slightly different ways.

Maybe It Is That Deep | It's Not That Deep Ep. 08
This episode starts exactly how you’d expect… completely all over the place. We go from a house full of kids, chaos, and unexpected visitors to tennis season, Snapchat etiquette, and why a snap score might say more about you than you think. Somewhere in the middle, we spiral into prom stress, last minute outfits, missing shoes, and the ongoing debate of whether being “last minute” is a flaw or a talent.
But then it shifts.
We get into what actually matters. How we fight, why we clash, and the reality of a mom trying to raise five kids without losing control… while a daughter is figuring out who she is in real time. We talk about pressure, boundaries, oldest daughter energy, and what it really looks like to have a relationship that’s close but not perfect.
It’s chaotic, honest, and a little more real than we planned… but probably exactly what this podcast is supposed to be.

Growing Up Online Is Not for the Weak | It's Not That Deep Ep. 07
This week, Edie and AD try to answer a question that quickly spirals… who actually has it harder?
What starts as a conversation about growing up in different generations turns into a real back-and-forth on social media, school pressure, friendships, and why high school feels like a completely different world now. AD opens up about the reality of navigating friend groups, snap maps, and the constant pressure to say the right thing, while Edie looks back on a time without all the noise and wonders if it really was easier or just simpler.
They get into everything from landlines and note-passing to cancel culture, college expectations, and the weird politics of lunch tables. It’s funny, a little chaotic, and surprisingly honest about how different life can feel depending on where you’re sitting.
At the core of it, it’s not really about who had it harder. It’s about trying to understand each other while living in completely different versions of the same world.
And like always, they may not agree… but they’ll figure it out together.

That Outfit Is Doing Too Much | It's Not That Deep Ep. 06
In this episode, Edie and AD discuss fashion, trends, and the questionable outfit choices that haunt you forever on your mom’s Instagram.
It starts with a debate over what counts as a neutral color and whether wearing black to the Iron Bowl will get you mistaken for an Alabama fan. From there, things spiral into childhood fashion trauma, neon tennis outfits, braces that stayed on way too long, and the realization that the outfits you thought were cool a few years ago… were not.
They also break down current trends they love and the ones they absolutely do not, from butterfly necklaces and zebra print to the bow trend, chunky jewelry, and the ongoing hoodie epidemic. Along the way they introduce the concept of “Target glasses” which is that strange phenomenon where everything looks amazing in Target until you get home and realize it’s not.
The conversation eventually drifts into Alabama rush culture, pageant trainers, and the emotional drama that can come with sorority recruitment in the South.
It’s fashion advice, family roasting, and a reminder that sometimes… it’s really just not that deep.

Is It Lore Or Just Red Flags? | It's Not That Deep Ep. 05
In this week’s episode of It’s Not That Deep, Edie and AD try to talk about red flags… and quickly realize they may be the red flags.
They get into everything from the early signs you should probably run from in a relationship to the ones people ignore because someone’s “really hot.” AD breaks down her theory on love bombing, avoidant attachments, and why being a self-proclaimed lover girl might actually be the problem. Edie reflects on the red flags she used to ignore, the ones she still has, and why sometimes the real issue is just getting bored. Maybe if she didn’t get bored they’d be doing the podcast in the Bahamas right now…
Somewhere along the way they debate texting habits, Snapchat culture, TikTok bullying trends, and whether screenshotting conversations should automatically be considered suspicious behavior (and honestly if that isn’t suspicious to you, then you’re probably the screenshotter). They also get brutally honest about their own toxic traits, the parenting red flags AD thinks Edie has, and the child red flags Edie thinks AD refuses to admit.
The conversation continues to spiral when they start getting into their ideal men, celebrity crushes, country club vs cowboy energy, and the controversial opinion that money might not buy happiness… but it can get you pretty close.
As usual, it’s chaotic, unfiltered, and a little more honest than you asked for. Welcome back to It’s Not That Deep.

Pick Me or Power Move? | It's Not That Deep Ep. 04
This episode starts with a simple question: does AD actually get in trouble, or does Edie just get annoyed easily? That debate quickly turns into a full breakdown of Do Not Disturb drama, Life360 surveillance, and whether a teenager’s phone is ever truly “on.”
From there, we get high school flashbacks, including Edie’s strategic “birthday party” rager that somehow avoided real consequences, and AD’s very real meeting with the principal after an essay fluke. Was it cheating, or was it just Grammarly doing the most? We unpack the gray area between AI help and academic crime, and whether using tech to sound smarter is survival or scandal.
Then things escalate. Bell calls in from the mall on a possible burner phone. Buck hands his kindergarten teacher fake $1,000 for show and tell. We spiral into TikTok clout economics, Hair by Chrissy’s $4,000 extension controversy, and whether going viral is genius marketing or public self-sabotage.
Somewhere in the chaos, AD compares herself to Hester Prynne living in a Puritan society, Edie questions modern attention culture, and we debate if calling people out online is strategy, integrity, or just good business. It’s chaotic, it’s current, and it proves once again that no matter where we start, we are absolutely not staying on topic.

AD And Her Sports Books | It's Not That Deep Ep. 03
In episode three, we try to start the podcast like normal people, and immediately get derailed by AD asking to spend the night on a school night, again. From there it turns into a full audit of homework, PowerSchool excuses, and a chemistry cheating story that somehow includes a piece of paper under a shoe and a last minute confession in the carpool line.
Then we get into how kids are ten steps ahead of school laptop restrictions, why nobody reads the actual novels anymore, and why commas are apparently optional in 2025. We play a game that turns into public family allegations, toxic traits get exposed, and we take a hard left into bed rotting, side hustles, and the moment we realize AD may or may not be running a small operation involving sports bets and a suspicious amount of cash in her backpack.
It’s chaotic, it’s unfiltered, and it escalates so fast we have to change subject before someone gets arrested.

You Are My Payback | It's Not That Deep Ep. 02
In this episode, we try to talk about tennis, but obviously we end up talking about rosters, what a huzz is, crashouts, and why AD still has her own mother on Do Not Disturb. We get into AD’s very questionable tennis philosophy, why she shows up to matches with the bare minimum, and how that somehow still works for her. We also tell the story of the infamous mailbox incident, argue about FaceTime versus phone calls, and spiral into a full generational debate about slang, filters, and why moms love a dramatic Instagram story.
Somewhere in the middle, we accidentally unpack how differently we both handle stress, how intense sports can get, and why mother daughter communication is basically its own sport. And somehow, we end the episode with a purity ring teaser that is absolutely not happening (according to AD). It’s chaotic, it’s honest, and it’s exactly what you think it is.

Welcome to It's Not That Deep! | It's Not That Deep Ep. 01
Welcome to the very first episode of It’s Not That Deep! In true Thompson fashion, episode one goes completely off the rails, and it’s only the beginning. There’s a duck funeral, an unsolicited ChatGPT skincare consult, an argument about who’s more dramatic, and a crash course in Gen Z slang that leaves Edie utterly lost.
This episode has zero structure, way too much laughter, and the kind of mother-daughter chaos that can’t be scripted. Welcome to It’s Not That Deep, where we don’t have a plan, but we definitely have opinions.

[…] Like are you basing any, are you looking at influencers for inspiration on anything or? Influencers, I think, is also a changing thing. I think that influencers are not as heavily influencing Gen Z as we think. I think that it's more lifestyle-based rather than... I think people... I don't know how to explain this. Like I enjoy the content more than what they are actually saying. I think that it's based off how you make your videos, how you market them and the type of people you want to market towards. And I think that influencers, I don't have any influencers, me personally. I don't know how it was when you were like growing up, but I don't really have any. […]
