Solo In The Arctic | What I learned in the Silence

A solo river trip offers more than just solitude; it is a test of self-reliance and a chance to witness your true character. In this episode, we break down what it takes to go alone, but also why we go alone. We discuss the logistics of my trip, some of the gear, why I took 2 boats and how mind blowing it all was. It is about more than just the experience on the water; it is about why we seek solitude in nature. If you are an outdoor adventure enthusiast who cares about the long-term health of our ecosystems, this discussion is for you. If you have wanted to level up your outdoor adventures this is for you. This was my first serious leveling up myself and this is my story. I have interspersed lots of footage from my trip to illustrate what I'm talking about but also to give a sneak peak at upcoming videos of the trip. So if you are listening remember there are strong visuals on Youtube. Thanks for watching or listening and I'd appreciate a subscribe, a kudos or a review if you enjoyed it. If you have any questions please leave a comment. Leave a comment and let me know what you thought. Thanks!

Trump's Road That Could Change Alaska Forever EP 15

Could one road trigger a chain reaction across Alaska’s Arctic wilderness—without most people ever realizing it? Welcome back to Days on the Land, where we explore outdoor adventure, conservation, and the occasional bit of outdoor dipshittery, while also sharing firsthand experiences from out on our public lands. In this episode, Jim Dau breaks down what he’s seen in the caribou data, what’s changing in Alaska’s wild country, and why the proposed Ambler Road could have consequences far beyond what most people expect. The story gets bigger, the stakes get higher, and by the end, “just one road” won’t sound so simple anymore. And if you listened to Episode 14 with Lance and Dempsey, two Eskimo hunters, this conversation connects to that one in a powerful way—because it all comes back to how people, wildlife, and the land are tied together.

3,000 Rivers, Caribou Herds, and the Road That Could Split Them

The Ambler Road is not just a road, it is a test case for what happens when industrial access collides with one of the last intact wild places on Earth. On one side, Lance Kramer argues the road could slash fuel and food costs for remote Alaska villages. On the other, Dempsey Woods warns it could open the door to outside pressure, mine expansion, and permanent damage to a subsistence way of life. This episode follows the fight over Alaska's Ambler Access Project through the eyes of the people closest to it. Lance breaks down the economics of life in the bush, where groceries, heating fuel, and gasoline can be brutally expensive, and explains why some locals see a road as a practical lifeline. Dempsey counters with a different reality: no real community-wide consent, no guarantee the road stays industrial-only, and a deep fear that once the wilderness is broken open, it never closes again. You'll discover: Why some villagers see the road as a way to cut fuel prices in half How land ownership, gates, and tolls could shape whether the road stays restricted The environmental concerns around tailings, sulfur dioxide, and stream crossings Why Dempsey believes the real cost is cultural, not just ecological How the debate over Ambler ties into broader questions about consumption, development, and the future of subsistence living The episode also previews a critical perspective from former Alaska wildlife biologist Jim Dow, who has spent decades studying caribou herds and warns that fragmenting habitat could have consequences far beyond one mining district. His comments raise the stakes even higher: this is not just about jobs versus wilderness, but about whether Alaska can keep large, connected ecosystems intact at all. If you care about public lands, subsistence hunting, caribou migration, or the future of remote Alaska communities, this conversation gives you the full picture from both sides. Essential listening if you want to understand why the Ambler Road has become one of the most contentious land-use battles in the state.

Westerners Want the Gov. Hands OFF Our Lands - EP 12

Hey all you outdoor and paddling nuts. Welcome back to another eppisode of Days On The Land Podcast! Today I want to talk about what public sentiment is like in the West with regard to the unprecedented assault on our public lands, waters, and wildlife. Colorado College that has a fantastic ecological, outdoor rec, and natural resource management programs, and the college puts out a regular study which includes extensive polling about conservation issues in the west. I think there is some really important findings in this study which comes out every year by the way. I'll link to the whole report in the notes so you can look at it yourself. I'll be putting up the graphics from the report on screen so you might want to watch this on YouTube. I'm more or less going to read from the study and will add some comments as needed. I think this study shows that we are not as divided as we think at lease not on this subject. And I'll bet we all have more issues in common if we could just get into the nuance of all things. River Access in Colorado is Asinine; Talking with American Whitewater

River Access in Colorado is Asinine. I sit down with two of American Whitewaters access protection specialists to talk about the current state of river access, what we can do, and what comes next. American Whitewater collaborated on a new documentary Common Waters and we discuss the premiss of the film. Access is important to all urban locked outdoor jamokes and we have to keep pushing for better access that is more inline with other states. If you are not from Colorado you should pay attention because its not the only state where access to our national lands and waters is being restricted.
