1746 yılında imzasız olarak yayınlanan, ama kim tarafından kaleme alındığı hemen herkese malum ilk eseri Felsefi Düşünceler, berrak ve lafı dolandırmayan üslubuyla Diderot’nun entelektüel kamuoyu nezdinde hemen teveccüh görmesini sağlamıştır. Üç günde yazılan ve 62 paragraftan müteşekkil bu küçümen yapıt aslen çelişkili bir yapıya sahiptir ve Diderot’nun zaman zaman Tanrı fikrini kabule yaklaşır göründüğü tek yapıtıdır. Ancak Diderot’nun bu en az tanrıtanımaz yapıtı, sansür aygıtı tarafından derhal tanrıtanımazlıkla itham edilerek yakılarak yok edilmeye mahkum edilecektir.
