This podcast series was created as part of a PER Innovation Fund at Reuben College, Oxford. It documents and follows the research process as part of my MPhil degree in Global & Area Studies, with particular focus on my immersion period which I spent in California, between September and December of 2022. It follows how my research developed, both whilst in California but also in the months after, when the podcast was initially recorded. It touches on the logistics of travel, making new friends as an adult, returning to a place that was formally ‘home’.

Episode 3: Notes on Visas and Travel

On this episode, I’m discussing the logistics of travel. Getting to California was a long process, from applying to a programme to figuring out my visa. I break it all down, discussing time management and juggling different expectations. I dip into figuring out priorities and how to get the most out of your experience when you have a strict timeline.

Episode 2: 'Doing' Fieldwork

This episode discusses fieldwork. I attempt to untangle what it actually means to ask certain research questions, as well as what it takes to start answering them. I found the process challenging, but ultimately it was also one of the most rewarding parts of doing research for me, from the people I met to the reflections I had months later. These reflections are always fun to come back to, because they capture such a particular moment in time. I find it funny to listen back on why I chose to hit record, the thoughts I was having, the strides I was making in coming to conclusions within my work and for my thesis.

Episode 1: Friends in New Places

In this episode, we're talking friendship.

This was one of the first episodes I recorded, and you can definitely tell. I break down moving to a new place from the lens of meeting new people, trying to find your feet in a bunch of new environments, whether they be academic, social or at your local CorePower. I talk the importance of finding time to watch Bachelor in Paradise, and the rule I lived by, saying yes to absolutely everything.
