When Employees Stop Believing Their Leaders: The Hidden Cost of Broken Trust

What really makes people stay with an organization? Salary matters. Benefits matter. Opportunity matters. But there is another factor that can determine whether talented employees remain committed—or quietly begin planning their exit: Trust. In this episode, I explore the connection between leadership credibility, organizational climate, employee engagement, stability, psychological safety, and retention. Employees do not expect leaders to have every answer. They understand that organizations change, priorities shift, budgets tighten, missions evolve, and difficult decisions sometimes have to be made. What employees do expect is honesty. They want to know that what leadership tells them today will not become something completely different tomorrow without explanation. They want consistency between words and actions. They want to know that when circumstances change, their leaders will communicate openly rather than allow rumors, uncertainty, and mistrust to fill the void. Because once employees stop believing their leaders, something changes. They may continue showing up. They may still attend meetings, answer emails, complete assignments, and meet expectations. But mentally, they may already be leaving. The résumé gets updated. Other opportunities suddenly look more attractive. Retirement starts looking closer. The employee who once imagined spending another decade with the organization begins wondering why they should stay another year. That is why turnover can be a lagging indicator of a much deeper organizational problem. In this episode, we discuss why a healthy organizational climate is not about keeping everyone happy, why stability does not mean avoiding change, how psychological safety affects performance and retention, and why leadership trust must be earned through everyday actions—not slogans, surveys, or PowerPoint presentations. One idea sits at the center of the conversation: Organizations do not lose people only when they submit their resignation. Sometimes they lose them the moment those employees stop believing their leaders. If you lead people, manage teams, build organizations, or care about creating a workplace where talented people actually want to stay, this conversation is for you. 🎧 Listen, reflect, and ask yourself: Would the people in your organization describe its climate as one built on trust?

25 Years Later: Where Were You on 9/11? | The Day Everything Changed

Where were you on the morning of September 11, 2001? As we approach the 25th Anniversary of the horrific attacks on 9/11... For millions of us, the answer is still crystal clear—even 25 years later. I was stationed at Fort Drum, New York. When I arrived at work that morning, something immediately felt wrong. The normally busy workplace seemed like a ghost town. Then I found everyone. They were gathered in the break room, silently staring at a television as smoke poured from the World Trade Center. And while we watched, the second plane struck the second tower—live. In that instant, any thought that this might have been a terrible accident disappeared. America was under attack. In this special 25th-anniversary episode, I reflect on what I remember from that morning, how September 11 changed our nation, the extraordinary courage and sacrifice that followed, and something else we should never forget: the sense of unity Americans found in the days afterward. Nearly 3,000 lives were lost. Countless families were forever changed. First responders ran toward danger. Service members answered a new call. And an entire generation remembers exactly where they were when the world changed. Twenty-five years later, remembering 9/11 means more than repeating the words “Never Forget.” It means preserving the stories. It means honoring those we lost. It means remembering the courage of those who responded. And perhaps it means remembering how, during one of America's darkest moments, we rediscovered what it meant to stand together. 🎙️ Listen to this personal reflection, then ask yourself: Where were you on September 11, 2001? If you remember that day, share your story. These memories are part of our history—and they deserve to be preserved. We remember. We honor. We will never forget. 🇺🇸 #September11 #NeverForget #911Remembrance #September11th #25YearsLater #PatriotDay #Remember911 #AmericanHistory #VeteranStories #MilitaryStories #Podcast #PersonalStories #NeverForget911

Puerto Rico is Not a Punchline: A Call for Respect and Unity in Today’s America

In this powerful and eye-opening episode of ThisAin'tMakeBelieve, I respond to a recent controversial remark/joke by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who labeled Puerto Rico a “floating island of garbage” during a publicevent. For me, a proud Puerto Rican and Army veteran with over 30 years of service, these words are more than just a joke—they’re a painful reminder of the disrespect and misunderstanding that Puerto Ricans and many other communities face in America. With passion and insight, I share a personal journey from Puerto Rico to active duty in the U.S. Army, tracing a family legacy of service to a country they deeply love. This episode isn’t just about setting the record straight—it’s a call to action. I explore the invaluable contributions of Puerto Ricans to American society, from the battlefields to the cultural heart of the nation, and asks: Why are we still treated as outsiders in our own country? Tune in as I dive into the importance of unity, respect, and the dangers of careless language in a divided world. This episode is a powerful reminder that words matter and that real patriotism embraces all Americans, including those from “la isla del encanto.” Whether you're from Puerto Rico, the mainland, or anywhere in between, this conversation will make you think, reflect, and hopefully inspire you to demand better. If you believe in unity, respect, and the power of diversity, don’t miss this episode.
