How to Be Human in the Age of the Machine with Paul Kingsnorth

For all the benefits that technology provides, many people are increasingly feeling a sense of disquiet. The question is not simply about what technology can or cannot do for us; the deeper question is about what technology is doing to us. How is it transforming us and our understanding of what it means to be human? Paul Kingsnorth, one of the most perceptive and compelling writers of our time, joins us to consider just this. Paul is an acclaimed novelist, essayist, poet, and former environmental activist, and the author of ten books across fiction, nonfiction, and poetry. His most recent book, "Against the Machine: On the Unmaking of Humanity," has been described as a spiritual manual for dissidents in a technological age. In this episode, we explore Paul’s argument that Western culture has become uprooted from the people, places, traditions, and spiritual beliefs that once gave it meaning — and that what has emerged in its place is not simply a collection of new technologies, but an entire way of life that he calls “the Machine.” We talk about how we’ve arrived at this particular cultural moment, why technology is never truly neutral, and how modern technology raises ancient questions about our desire to transcend our limits and even remake what it means to be human. Drawing on Paul’s own remarkable spiritual journey — from a secular upbringing, through Buddhism and neo-paganism, and ultimately to Orthodox Christianity — we consider his conviction that the crisis we are facing is ultimately not political, cultural, or technological, but spiritual. What does all of this mean for the Church? If we are living in an increasingly uprooted culture, what would it look like to become a more deeply rooted Church? And how can Christians faithfully resist the formative power of a global technological society while continuing to live, work, and minister in the modern world? This is a fascinating conversation about technology, culture, faith, and ultimately what it means to be human in the age of the Machine.

The Promise and Dangers of AI with Rosalind Picard

As artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes modern life, many people are asking big questions: Will these technologies help solve humanity’s greatest problems or create entirely new ones? Will AI help human beings flourish, or slowly erode our capacity to think deeply, relate meaningfully, and live responsibly? Few people are better equipped to help us wrestle with these questions than Rosalind Picard, professor at MIT, founder of the field of affective computing, and a pioneer in the development of wearable technologies used in epilepsy detection, autism support, and neurological research. But alongside her groundbreaking work in AI, Roz has also become an important voice calling attention to the ethical, psychological, and spiritual challenges these technologies may create. In this conversation, we discuss the promise and dangers of AI, the rise of large language models, the impact of AI on human attention, identity, and formation, and why technologies that simulate empathy and wisdom can never replace genuine human relationships, moral responsibility, or spiritual life. Drawing from both her groundbreaking work at the MIT Media Lab and her Christian faith, Roz challenges us to think not only about what AI can do, but about the kind of people we are becoming, and what it will take to remain deeply human in an age increasingly shaped by machines.

How to Find a Life Worth Living with Miroslav Volf

At first glance, many of us would assume that a long, happy, and healthy life is the key to flourishing. But what if a life can be successful, comfortable, and even enjoyable, yet still fail to become a life truly worthy of our humanity? At a time when many people, especially young adults, are searching for meaning, purpose, and direction, Miroslav Volf has spent years helping students wrestle with one of life’s most important questions: What makes a life truly worth living? In this conversation, we explore the difference between happiness and flourishing, why modern culture often leaves people feeling spiritually restless, and how the Christian vision of the good life differs from both secular success and self-fulfillment. We also discuss how to incorporate the reality of failure, suffering, and even death into our vision of flourishing and how Jesus must form the center of a meaningful life. Whether you are a pastor, ministry leader, parent, student, or simply someone asking the big questions about meaning and purpose, you will find this episode thoughtful, rich, and deeply encouraging. Miroslav Volf is a theologian and author as well as the Henry B. Wright Professor of Theology at Yale Divinity School where he co-created the renowned course Life Worth Living, one of the most popular humanities courses at Yale. He is also the founder and director of the Yale Center for Faith and Culture.
