   Ax Handle Saturday

"Jacksonville's 40 Year Ax Handle Saturday Coverup" 1. The Lead-Up and the Spark: The podcast begins by setting the stage in the summer of 1960 in downtown Jacksonville, then one of the most segregated cities in the South. Listeners are introduced to the NAACP Youth Council, led by its 16-year-old president, Rodney Hurst, and 23-year-old vice president, Alton Yates (a recently discharged Air Force veteran who had worked on space travel simulation experiments).Inspired by their eighth-grade history teacher and charismatic mentor, Rutledge Pearson—whose core philosophy was "Freedom is not free. If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem"—these young activists decided to take a stand against downtown commercial segregation. The episode details the hypocrisy of stores like Woolworth’s and W.T. Grant, which eagerly accepted Black shoppers' money at retail counters but strictly barred them from sitting at lunch counters. Starting August 13, 1960, the Youth Council began staging disciplined, peaceful sit-ins and occupying white-only seats. 2. The Ambush: The narrative shifts to the tense morning of Saturday, August 27. Despite warnings from FBI infiltrator Clarence Sears that the Ku Klux Klan was planning an attack, local law enforcement did nothing to protect the citizens. Rutledge Pearson and advisor Arnett Girardeau drove downtown and witnessed white men in Confederate uniforms gathering in Hemming Park around a station wagon displaying a sign that read "Free Ax Handles"—all while local police looked on idly.Undeterred by Pearson's warnings, the Youth Council voted unanimously to go forward with their planned sit-in, choosing to target W.T. Grant to stay away from the immediate park crowd. As the teenagers exited the store, they were brutally ambushed by a mob of 200 white men wielding baseball bats and heavy, unattached wooden ax handles. The podcast paints a raw, chilling picture of the violence: Alton Yates was struck in the back of the head, carrying a permanent scar. Charlie Griffin, an innocent high schooler who was downtown merely to shop, was brutally beaten by multiple men after attempting to defend himself against an initial blow. A 17-year-old Nat Glover (the future sheriff of Jacksonville) ran to a white police officer for help, only to be told: "You better get out of here before they kill you". The violence was finally checked when the Boomerangs, a local Black street gang, arrived on the scene to fight back and protect the fleeing children. Ironically, the moment the Black youth began defending themselves, the police department finally intervened, disproportionately arresting and charging Black individuals while letting the white rioters escape untouched.3. The Pivot: The Forty-Year Silence and Media BlackoutThe second half of the podcast pivots to the immediate power struggle and the systematic historical erasure that followed. Listeners learn how Mayor Haydon Burns went on television to spin the violence, falsely claiming that there was no uncontrolled fighting and that police had kept the two groups separated by 30 to 50 yards. To protect the city's commercial and tourism image, Jacksonville's major white newspapers—The Florida Times-Union and the Jacksonville Journal—enacted a complete news blackout, burying the story on page 15 or omitting it entirely. 4. The Triumph and Legacy: The episode concludes by tracking how the Black community successfully mobilized a massive selective buying campaign (boycott) that forced downtown merchants to capitulate, leading to the quiet desegregation of Jacksonville's lunch counters in April 1961.Finally, the podcast addresses the long, painful road to historical reckoning. For 40 years, Jacksonville buried the memory of that dark day in collective denial. It was only in 2000 that the city held its first official commemoration, later installing a commemorative plaque in Hemming Park (renamed James Weldon Johnson Park in 2020).

The Evolution and Heritage of Jacksonville Beach

A comprehensive historical and demographic overview of Jacksonville Beach and its neighboring coastal communities. The collective records trace the area's evolution from Spanish missions and 19th-century settlements like Ruby and Pablo Beach to its development as a major resort destination powered by the railroad and iconic wooden hotels. Documentation highlights significant aviation milestones, such as record-breaking flights by Jimmy Doolittle, and the community's transition to modern governance following the 1968 consolidation of Duval County. Later accounts focus on citizen-led activism through organizations like Beaches Watch, which successfully established height restrictions on high-rise buildings to protect the local quality of life. Furthermore, demographic data and educational resources illustrate the current socio-economic landscape of this vibrant Florida island community.

   Jacksonville's Consolidation Story

This podcast explores the historic 1968 merger of the City of Jacksonville and Duval County—one of the most significant structural local government reorganizations in American history. The episode dives deep into the forces that drove the city to drastically reinvent itself, the mechanics of the new unified government, and the complicated legacy the merger left behind.Key Themes Covered in the Episode: A City in Crisis: The episode sets the stage in the 1960s, a period when Jacksonville was buckling under severe dysfunction. The tax base was shrinking due to suburban sprawl, the St. Johns River was heavily polluted with raw sewage, and all 15 of the county's public high schools lost their academic accreditation. The final straw was a massive corruption scandal that saw 11 city and county officials indicted by a grand jury for bribery and larceny. The "Quiet Revolution": In response to the crisis, local civic and business leaders mobilized, sparking the "Yates Manifesto"—a petition that demanded the state legislature allow citizens to vote on a consolidated government. Following a successful voter referendum in 1967, the city and county officially merged on October 1, 1968. This radical shift created a massive jurisdiction of over 800 square miles, making Jacksonville the largest city by land area in the contiguous United States. The Power of the "Strong Mayor": The podcast explains how the merger eliminated duplicative county and city services (saving money and increasing efficiency) and replaced a weak, fragmented system with a "Strong Mayor" form of government, alongside a 19-member city council and a unified Office of General Counsel. Clout and Triumphs: A major focus of the podcast is how this unified structure gave Jacksonville the regional "clout" and tax base to achieve massive, long-term goals. Listeners will learn how the consolidated government made it possible to secure an NFL franchise (the Jacksonville Jaguars) in 1993, and fund massive infrastructure leaps like the $2.2 billion Better Jacksonville Plan and the Preservation Project, which established a massive greenbelt around the city. The Tale of Two Cities (Unfulfilled Promises): The episode concludes by looking critically at the ongoing tensions and failures of consolidation. It highlights how promises made to predominantly Black, urban-core neighborhoods to win their votes—such as replacing failing septic tanks, paving roads, and providing safe drinking water—remain unfulfilled more than 50 years later. Furthermore, the podcast explores how the merger diluted the political influence of African American neighborhoods, erased individual neighborhood identities, and fueled suburban sprawl to the detriment of downtown revitalization.

   Hurricane Dora - 1964

Welcome to our latest episode, where we dive into the unprecedented fury and lasting legacy of Hurricane Dora, a monumental tempest that forever changed Northeast Florida in September 1964.The Unprecedented Threat: Before 1964, residents of Florida's "First Coast" felt relatively immune to direct hurricane strikes, often watching storms curve safely away. Dora completely shattered that illusion. It holds the historic distinction of being the first tropical cyclone on record to make landfall over the Atlantic coast of North Florida at hurricane intensity. Born off the coast of Senegal, Dora swelled into a massive Category 4-equivalent storm over the Atlantic. Instead of turning northeast as forecasters expected, Dora took a highly unusual westward turn and stalled off the coast for nearly 24 hours, executing erratic cyclonic loops as it teased the coastline. This agonizing wait subjected the beaches to relentless waves and wind before the storm finally roared ashore near St. Augustine early on September 10.

   Hollywood of the South

The "Winter Film Capital of the World" Before Hollywood, California became the center of the American film industry, the title belonged to Jacksonville, Florida. In the early 20th century (beginning around 1908), pioneering motion picture companies from the Northeast and Midwest—such as Kalem, Thanhouser, Edison, and Vim—flocked to Jacksonville. The city offered a mild winter climate that kept cameras from freezing and allowed for year-round outdoor shooting, as well as a modern downtown and diverse natural landscapes. Jacksonville quickly became a massive hub for silent film production, hosting some 30 production companies at its peak and helping to launch the careers of legendary performers like Oliver "Babe" Hardy and the internationally renowned comedian Marcel Perez. The Bust and Exodus to Hollywood Despite the economic boom, the relationship between the filmmakers and Jacksonville residents quickly soured. The film crews were notoriously rowdy and disruptive—they regularly pulled fake fire alarms to film the racing fire trucks, drove cars into the St. Johns River, and turned the city's streets into chaotic backlots on Sundays, offending the conservative, church-going public. In 1917, the city elected an anti-film mayor who eliminated business incentives and vowed to curb the industry's excesses. Combined with rampant price-gouging by local merchants and the simultaneous emergence of Los Angeles as a viable production center, the studios packed their bags and left for the West Coast by the end of the decade.

   The Battle of Olustee

The podcasts provide an in-depth look at the Battle of Olustee, the largest and bloodiest American Civil War engagement fought in Florida on February 20, 1864. The episodes details how Union Brigadier General Truman Seymour hastily advanced his 5,500 troops into a meeting engagement against Confederate forces led by Brigadier Generals Joseph Finegan and Alfred Colquitt. Instead of organizing a coordinated assault, Seymour committed his brigades piecemeal into the open pine barren, allowing the Confederates to continually overlap the Union flanks.

Jacksonville Rising: The Great Fire of 1901

This podcast highlights Jacksonville’s most tragic event: The Great Fire of May 3, 1901. Ignited by a stray chimney spark at the Cleveland Fibre Factory, the fire rapidly spread through dry Spanish moss. Fanned by strong winds and exacerbated by a severe drought, it tore through downtown, destroying roughly 2,400 structures and leaving 10,000 residents homeless. The episode emphasizes the resilience of the community and the subsequent architectural renaissance led by Henry John Klutho. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and the Prairie School, Klutho transformed a blank canvas into a modern city, utilizing innovative materials like reinforced concrete. Notable architectural masterpieces discussed include the St. James Building (now City Hall) and the Florida Life Building. Ultimately, the podcast tracks Jacksonville's steady growth and transformation into the 21st century.

The Gainesville Student Murders and Danny Rolling

Danny Rolling, dubbed the "Gainesville Ripper," was an American serial killer who murdered eight people between 1989 and 1990. Driven by childhood abuse and a desire for notoriety, his crimes later inspired the horror film Scream. In November 1989, Rolling committed his first murders in his hometown of Shreveport, Louisiana, killing Tom Grissom, his daughter Julie, and grandson Sean. In August 1990, while on the run, he terrorized Gainesville, Florida, by brutally murdering five college students: Sonja Larson, Christina Powell, Christa Hoyt, Tracy Paules, and Manny Taboada. Rolling broke into their apartments, stabbed them, and staged the female victims in lewd positions, even decapitating Hoyt. Initially, police suspected student Edward Humphrey. However, a tip from a Louisiana acquaintance and a matching tape recorder found at a local bank robbery campsite linked Rolling to the crimes. His type B blood matched evidence at both locations. Rolling pleaded guilty in 1994 and was executed by lethal injection in Florida in 2006.
