Jayant Kashyap: 'Visits after dark'
‘Visits after dark’ is a sequence of three shorter poems building upon a rather old (incomplete) draft, which I expanded particularly to send to the Crow & Cross Keys (https://crowcrosskeys.com/2025/03/12/visits-after-dark-three-poems-jayant-kashyap/). I’d first learned about the magazine following publication of some of Amy Wolstenholme’s poems (https://crowcrosskeys.com/tag/amy-wolstenholme/) in 2021, and ‘Visits after dark’ appeared in March 2025.

Jayant Kashyap: 'The Earth as a Woman Passively Smoking'
‘The Earth as a Woman Passively Smoking’ was published as part of the Australian Plumwood Mountain Journal’s “The Transformative Now (https://plumwoodmountain.com/poem/the-earth-as-a-woman-passively-smoking/)” issue in June 2023. The poem has an epigraph from Daniel Clark’s ‘Sixteen Haiku (https://poems.poetrysociety.org.uk/poems/sixteen-haiku/)’, and in the introduction to the issue, guest editor Kristen Lang praised Kashyap’s work (https://plumwoodmountain.com/poem/introduction-3/) for having the capability to become a “part of the tapestry of a given time.”

Jayant Kashyap: 'Burning the Stamps'
‘Burning the Stamps’ dates back to 2018, if not further, which was when I was new to publishing poetry, and very affected by the very brilliant Agha Shahid Ali (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agha_Shahid_Ali)’s work (hence the mention here). At least sever years after having written the first draft of the poem, it appeared in the US-based Collateral in November 2025 (https://www.collateraljournal.com/poetry/jkashyap) as ‘On Burning the Stamps’.

‘Pyre’ first appeared in The Bombay Literary Magazine’s 54th issue, in April 2023 (https://bombaylitmag.com/contribution/jayant-kashyap-issue-54/), and was praised for “an immersive experience.” It later appeared, in a slightly different form, in Kashyap’s New Poets Prize-winning third pamphlet Notes on Burials (https://poetrybusiness.co.uk/product/notes-on-burials/) (smith|doorstop, 2025).
The poem has Meg Dunley’s post from X (formerly Twitter) as epigraph: “Do birds always fly with purpose or also just for fun[?] (https://x.com/MegDunley/status/1604017340534124545)”

This challenge was created in partnership with People Need Nature (https://peopleneednature.org.uk/), and set and judged by poet Louisa Adjoa Parker (https://poems.poetrysociety.org.uk/poets/louisa-adjoa-parker/).
It was later presented at COP26, the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, in Glasgow (https://peopleneednature.org.uk/poetry-for-the-climate-cop26/), and featured as the UK Department for Education-commissioned KS4 ‘Poetry and nature’ resource (https://www.educationnaturepark.org.uk/resource/poetry-and-nature). In 2024 and ’25, two research papers also mentioned this poem, praising it for being “pre-empt[ive of] any idea of easy solutions (https://doi.org/10.4324/9781003383598-9)”, and noting it as “a good example of how a sophisticated structure can be combined with deep thought (https://vital.lib.tsu.ru/vital/access%20/manager/Repository/koha:001159601).”
