   Diluted, Deluded, Disgusting | Mike Castelli | Revelation 3:14-22

   With the text in Revelation 3:14-22, we see the last church directly addressed by Jesus, and His words are disappointing and fearful.  Imagine hating a mouthful of water so badly that it causes you to vomit.  Yuck!  The church at Laodicea was like nasty, unpleasant water.  She had lost her purpose for God and pleasure to God.  And the odd part is that she thought she was doing great!  Symbolically, this may be the final church of ‘the end’, which is a church in name only. Fully nominal.  Fully lost.  Fully self-deluded.  Yet even she is given hope and a chance to repent, as He reminds us that true love always comes with reproof and discipline that leads to good.  He stands at the door and knocks, ready to come in and give life eternal.  Do you hear Him?  Will you invite Him into you?  Will you have intimate communion with Him?    True Church | Mike Castelli | Revelation 3:7-13

   What does a ‘good church’ look like? How does she behave in her culture and what does Jesus promise to her?  Welcome to Philadelphia (‘brotherly love’).  In progression, this is the 6_th_ church addressed and it most certainly represents a church that knows how to love God and love people in truth.  She is faithful as a witness to His open door of salvation: the Gospel taken to the world in which she lives.  Therefore, He says that He will keep her from the time of trial that is coming upon the whole earth.  What a promise!  This is the church that is ‘caught-up’ to Jesus when He comes to collect her.  He says, “I am coming soon,” and so we endure patiently, knowing that no one can seize our crown, as we look forward in the hope of standing as pillars in His coming Kingdom.    Asleep... Dying... Dead | Mike Castelli | Revelation 3:1-6

   This church is one of two that has the undesirable distinctive of having essentially nothing worthy of commending. What would you do if Jesus looked at your church and said you were spiritually asleep, dying and generally dead?  What if He said that all you had left was a reputation for being alive, but it was long gone.  Welcome to the church at Sardis.  While this church seems to be filled with the living who are dead, she is a warning to all ‘great churches’ that are living on their past glory.  This seems reminiscent of the days of the Protestant Reformers who sought to bring life, purity and the Word of God back to the visible church, only to have many of their offspring eventually slump into lethargic impurity.  He counsels her to wake up and remember why she exists, and to be awake for His return, lest He come like a thief in the night.  Let us be awake, active in service and watching… for the time is near!    Internal Corruption | Mike Castelli | Revelation 2:18-29

   If Pergamum is known as the ‘church of compromise’, then Thyatira wins the un-coveted title as the ‘church of corruption’.  What does it look like when compromise turns to corruption?  When a church is no longer just influenced by ungodliness and ungodly power, but now becomes the source of both, that is when compromise turns to corruption.  That is the church to whom Jesus is speaking at Thyatira, and she exists in many locations today.  Historically, many interpret this as the visible church that existed through the Middle Ages, following the collapse of the Roman Empire and leading up to the long-awaited time of access to the Word of God by common people.  To those who have kept themselves from ungodly authority and spiritual purity in Jesus, He says, “Hold on to what you have until I come.”  And as always, there is hope for those who do!    Internal Compromise | Mike Castelli | Revelation 2:12-17

   What happens when a church fails to maintain its holiness by compromising on exclusive devotion to Jesus and His call to live different from the world (those two usually go together)? And what happens when the pressures of the culture around them create a tension that can only be relieved by a compromise in the way she responds and acts?  Welcome to the church at Pergamum.  She was beginning to lose her focus and purity, as she compromised by linking arms with the way of the world.  This church description is often likened to the history of the church that followed the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine.  This church was weakened and compromised with the enticement of money and power that came with a worldly structure.  Is the Name of Jesus enough?  Is the Kingdom of God within you enough to wait in the assurance of faith for His Kingdom that is coming.  That is life in Hope!    Faith-Filled Suffering | Mike Castelli | Revelation 2:8-11

   The problem of suffering and the presence of an All Powerful and Good God has been one of the long-standing verbal attacks against Christianity.   Antagonists say, “If the God of Scripture existed, the suffering of humanity would not.”  Now God speaks to the church who is suffering in significant ways, but more than that, the body of believers whose call it is to suffer, even unto death.  This was very much a part of the early church as it grew under the hostilities of the early Jewish leaders and the Roman Empire. How do we/you respond to suffering in this life?  Do we/you engage suffering in a way that brings glory to Jesus?  Jesus tells us that the first death (physical) will come, but the Second Death (spiritual) will hold no harm for those in Him.  That is His promise, and that is our hope.  Is it yours?    Love Left Behind | Mike Castelli | Revelation 2:1-7

   The glorified Jesus who is the judge of His church begins to speak to her…  First up is the church that met at Ephesus.  She had many notable and beautiful qualities, especially that which holds high the Word of God, since false teachers were/are always present to introduce false teachings, inconsistent with the Name of Jesus. Yet, she had a problem that provoked His correction.  She worked hard for Him and kept a firm watch on obedience to His laws, but she let-go-of the way she initially demonstrated love.  One must presume that her love for people waned as she attempted to defend the Truth with which she was entrusted.  What does it look like when a church abandons their love?  How does it show in relation to God and people; especially those who do not know Him?  Welcome to Ephesus in the 1_st_ C. and many other 21_st_ C churches! How about us?  How about you?  There is hope and He has the fix… are we listening?    Living in Hope | Mike Castelli | Acts 1:6-8, 1 John 3:1-3

   We are entering into a short series that will dive into what Jesus speaks to the Seven Churches of the Revelation.  These are the last words Jesus speaks directly to His church, and these are messages from Jesus to those living in the HOPE of His Return.  We are still living in the wait, and when we do that well, it is a purifying process of readiness: to be with Him and be like Him. This is to set the course of imagining what Jesus would say to us living in the wait, as He speaks to the Seven Churches doing the same.  For all Seven, He instructs them to look forward to what is yet to come: living in the hope/wait that will be completed…soon.
