Chewing Gum E6 | Cassia Powell

We’re back with our sixth episode of Chewing Gum to talk to our honourary third member of J&J, Cassia Powell, about their first (of many) pets!

THIS EP'S CHEWY TOPICS:

tamagotchis (!!!), their tech, history & genealogy; care practices, character customization as a form of exploring one’s identity, experimenting with morality

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Bio:

Cassia Powell (they/them) is an emerging contemporary artist and curator based in the unceded lands of Lekwungen-speaking peoples, otherwise known as Victoria, BC. Powell is a BFA Visual Arts honours graduate from the University of Victoria. They are the co-founder of the Dirty Dishes Collective; a curatorial project which aims to support emerging artists and cultural practitioners as a site of critical discourse, creative experimentation, and community engagement.

Statement:

Between their personal artistic practice and their curatorial focus, Powell’s work explores comfort + care as a radical act of social resistance. They create surreal, affective visual structures and depictions of quotidian rituals using a combination of soft sculpture and large-scale oil painting. Each one of Powell’s works signifies vast lifeworlds of queer relationality, encrypted sociality, and utopian potentiality.

WHERE TO FIND THEIR WORK:

socials: @cassiapowell

website: cassiapowell.com

BONUS GOODIES!!

Glitch Feminism, Legacy Russell

Radical Softness as a Boundless Form of Resistance, Genderfail 2021 6th Edition Ver. 2

The Queer Games Avant-Garde, Bonnie Ruberg

Queer Online: Media Technology & Sexuality, David J.
