12 - Separating Roles and Souls

This week we discuss how to separate roles and souls. For many people their job is a core aspect of their identity. It’s “what they do”, and as Aristotle said… we are what we repeatedly do. Often in the workplace a person and the role they perform are inseparable in the minds of their colleagues. But this merging of identities causes problems. To avoid those problems you must separate roles and souls. How to do that is exactly what we’re going to discuss, as well as… * Whether a company is a mechanism or an organism * When Harry met Sally in the office * Jesse Eisenberg’s advice for hiring managers * The price we all pay by punching in and out * Finding peace with your spirit animal * And more This podcast is brought to you by CultivateMe (https://cultivateme.xyz), which helps companies create exciting career journeys for their people… so they don’t get bored and quit. If you’re curious about any of the ideas we discuss on the show, or you just want to connect, you can always send an email to hello@cultivateme.xyz. We’d love to hear from you. 10- Going Above And Beyond

This week we discuss… going above and beyond. What does it mean to “go above and beyond”? Is it fair to ask your employees to do this? Can “going above and beyond” be measured? And if not, should we even be using this as criteria for motivation and reward? On the other hand, can we really just disregard the concept all together? Won’t that lead to widespread malaise and mediocrity? So come along as we explore all those questions, as well as… * How free coffee hurts the mission * The 3 components of “ownership mentality” * Why no one chooses busboy as a career * How we outsource our sanity * And more This podcast is brought to you by CultivateMe (https://cultivateme.xyz), which helps companies create exciting career journeys for their people… so they don’t get bored and quit. 11 - Annual Retrospectives

This week we discuss New Year’s Retrospectives. It’s that time of year when we look back on what we did, what we learned, and how we’ve changed, then chart a course for the coming year. Doug and Gabe dig into their processes for doing this and talk about how to apply it in a professional setting. They also discuss… * Every kid’s favorite new year’s joke * How resolutions are a time capsule * The importance of mental hygiene * How to clear your mental RAM * The four stages of an annual retro * Projects versus habits * How to climb the ladder of abstraction * And more This podcast is brought to you by CultivateMe (https://cultivateme.xyz), which helps people and organizations use their everyday work as a platform for growth, both as professionals and as people. 9 - Why "mattering" matters

This week we discuss… mattering. What does it mean to “matter” within your organization? Why is that important? How does it affect business performance, team cohesion, and talent flow? And how do you create the cultural infrastructure for mattering? Or is this all a bunch of hippy dippy nonsense? We cover such important topics as… * The economic drag of matcha lattes and meditation rooms * How to balance touchy feely culture with bottom line business goals. * The relationship between meaning and mattering * Whether every employee ACTUALLY needs to matter * What railroad protocols have to do with helping employees feel seen and heard. * And more This podcast is brought to you by CultivateMe (https://cultivateme.xyz), which helps people and organizations use their everyday work as a platform for growth, both as professionals and as people. 6 - Four Lost Ways of Knowing

This week we discuss the four lost ways of knowing. It’s a wonderful framework from the brilliant mind of John Vervaeke (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLND1JCRq8Vuh3f0P5qjrSdb5eC1ZfZwWJ) that helps us better discuss what it means to “know something”. And how this framework can be used to reliably structure a powerful learning experience. In addition we discuss… * How to develop your intuition * Telling jokes at a funeral * The difference between landing a jet on an aircraft carrier and mastering pivot tables * Kids who are bad at sarcasm * How life is just a collection of games * Whether cursing is inherently wrong * Surfing with your fears * A simple way to instantly relay tons of information without actually stating it This podcast is brought to you by CultivateMe, which helps people and organizations use their everyday work as a platform for growth, both as professionals and as people. 5 - "Fit", and how to get it

Doug and Gabe dig into the idea of “fit”. Should you fit a person into a role? Or should you fit a role around a person? Topics include… * 2am toll booth collectors * Podcast Christmas Carols * How to flip a job interview to your advantage * How to hire for the journey, not the job * The inevitibility of outgrowing your role * Whether you can “phone it in” for decades on end And more. 4 - Talent Flow

This week we dig into the idea of talent flow. How does talent move through your organization? How do you attract it? How do you develop it? How do you promote it? And how do you avoid the dreaded exit interview phrase “There was no room for me to grow?” Is talent RETENTION the wrong metric? Are we trying to trap people in our organization and keep them doing the same thing for years on end? Or do we want a vibrant, dynamic ecosystem of people full of energy, creativity, and passion because they’re on a journey of discovery and development? * How does the career path of an Aircraft carrier XO teach us about stagnation? * How does Gene Hackman’s character in Hoosiers getting kicked out of the game teach us about trial by fire? * How does the way the Roman army and political system worked teach us about the motivations for caring for your people? Join us as we explore these and other ideas and try to unclog the gutters of talent flow. This is a public episode. 3 - Career Development

How does one make one’s way through an organization and build a career? In this episode Doug and Gabe discuss three key elements you want to constantly maintain and develop. As well as how can a company create some structures and incentives around these three elements to help improve the flow of talent through their organization. We like to say that “People want to go places where they can go places”. So if your organization wants to attract great people, you might want to think about how you can help them have not just a great job, but a great career. 2 - Impostor Syndrome

Imposter syndrome. That feeling that you don’t deserve the position that you’re in. That people think you are more knowledgable or capable than you really are. It’s a very common emotion in the workplace, especially among first time managers, but it can rear its head with any change of role. Doug discusses where he sees it pop up in his coaching work, and we discuss how to tame it and bring yourself and your team into alignment in a way that builds trust and unleashes productivity. This podcast is brought to you by CultivateMe (https://cultivateme.xyz), which helps people and organizations use their everyday work as a platform for growth, both as professionals and as people.
