<p> 12 people, including six children and a pregnant woman, died trying to make the dangerous journey across the English Channel. There is a "moral imperative" to stop the gangs helping people get to the UK in small boats, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper has said ahead of a meeting with ministers, intelligence agencies and law enforcement bodies. The summit takes place three days after 12 people, including six children and a pregnant woman, died trying to make the dangerous journey across the English Channel. The disaster is the deadliest loss of life in the waterway this year. Earlier this week, Conservative shadow home secretary James Cleverly said it was "not enough to talk about 'smashing the gangs' when the real-life consequences are so serious". Ms Cooper said people had been "packed into an unsafe boat which literally collapsed in the water" adding: "We will not rest until these networks have been dismantled and brought to justice." The deaths of a dozen or more people in the English Channel do not change the fundamental realities of this migration route - and the people who want to use it. This year so far, more than 21,000 people have made the crossing - slightly higher than at the same time last year but 20% lower than in 2022. Bhim Kohli: 80-year-old Grandfather assaulted in park at Franklin Park, Leicester and killed
<p> Bhim Kohli: Grandfather assaulted in a park on the outskirts of Leicester - four of five children arrested for 'murder' have been released. Leicestershire Police has confirmed that a 14-year-old boy remains in custody following an attack on a man in Franklin Park, Braunstone Town. Four other children have been released with no further action as the investigation into the murder continues. Four out of five children arrested on suspicion of murdering an 80-year-old man have now been freed. The children were arrested after the death of Bhim Kohli, who was assaulted in a park in Braunstone Town, near Leicester. Mr. Kohli, who was walking his dog in Franklin Park, was severely attacked on Sunday, September 1, 2024, and passed away in the hospital on Monday evening. A post-mortem revealed he died from a neck injury, with further tests pending. Leicestershire Police announced on Tuesday that a murder investigation had begun, and a 14-year-old boy and girl, along with two 12-year-old girls and a boy, had been taken into custody. Later, police confirmed that only the 14-year-old boy remains in custody, while the other four children were released with no further action. The assault took place near the Franklin Park entrance on Bramble Way at around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday. Mr. Kohli is reported to have been wearing a black jumper and grey jogging bottoms.
