What’s Really Behind the ADHD Medication Shortage?
If you take ADHD medication, you may already know how ridiculous this can feel. The medication is supposed to help with executive functioning — planning, organization, follow-through, remembering things — but actually getting the medication can require all of those skills.Every month can mean a new prescription, calling pharmacies, finding out they are out of stock, trying another pharmacy, dealing with partial fills, and sometimes switching medications altogether. So why is ADHD medication still so hard to get?In this video, I look at what is actually behind the stimulant shortage, including:- increased demand for ADHD medications- DEA production quotas- why manufacturers sometimes do not use their full quota- active ingredient shortages- manufacturing and distribution problems- pharmacy allocation issues- why one pharmacy may have medication while another has none- why Schedule II prescriptions create extra administrative barriers- what happens when shortages force people to switch medicationsI also talk about my own experience.I recently switched from Adderall to Vyvanse largely because Adderall was becoming so difficult to find consistently. Since switching, I have noticed more anxiety, lower frustration tolerance, and worse focus. That is my experience, not a universal response to Vyvanse. But it highlights something I think gets lost when we talk about this as just a “supply problem.”A shortage can become a treatment problem. If a medication that works for you becomes unavailable, you may end up rationing, taking partial fills, changing doses, switching pharmacies, or changing medications entirely. And that is where the irony becomes hard to ignore:People with ADHD are being asked to navigate an executive-function obstacle course just to maintain treatment for an executive-function disorder.I also look at why the explanation is more complicated than simply saying “DEA quotas caused the shortage.” DEA quotas matter, but so do manufacturing capacity, active pharmaceutical ingredients, supply-chain limits, allocation rules, quality-control issues, and shifting demand. So the real question is not just:Why is there a shortage? It is:Why does so much of the burden of that shortage fall on the patient? If you take Adderall, Vyvanse, methylphenidate, or another ADHD stimulant, I would really like to hear what your experience has been.Have you had trouble finding your medication?Have you had to call multiple pharmacies?Take a partial fill?Switch medications?Or have you found a system that actually works?MASSACHUSETTS LAW: https://www.mass.gov/doc/policy-2024-05-schedules-ii-and-iii-quantity-limits-pdf/downloadShare your experience in the comments. ADHD Masking Made Me Lonely: Why I Disappear Even Around People I Love
ADHD can feel incredibly lonely, even when you are surrounded by people. You may want connection badly, but relationships can also feel exhausting, unsafe, or strangely difficult to maintain. You may people-please, mask, overthink texts, panic when someone pulls away, withdraw after feeling rejected, or isolate yourself because being misunderstood all the time gets exhausting. And underneath all of that can be a painful thought:“If they really knew me, would they still want me around?”In this video, I talk about the loneliness I have experienced with ADHD and some of the patterns that may help explain why so many adults with ADHD describe feeling disconnected even when they are not physically alone. We’ll talk about:- ADHD and loneliness- masking and the feeling that people only know the version of you that you perform- rejection sensitivity and the fear of being left- people pleasing and difficulty saying no- emotional reactions that can push people away- hyperfocus and unintentionally neglecting friendships- social exhaustion and self-isolation- low self-esteem and the lasting impact of being misunderstood growing up- why finding other neurodivergent people can sometimes feel like finally speaking the same languageThis is not about saying every person with ADHD feels lonely or experiences relationships the same way. This is about something I experience, something I hear from a lot of other people with ADHD, and what I found when I went looking for possible explanations. One of the strangest parts of ADHD loneliness is the paradox:You desperately want to feel known... but being truly seen can also feel terrifying. So you protect yourself. You mask. You keep people happy. You retreat before they can reject you.And sometimes, the very things we do to protect ourselves from loneliness can make us feel even more alone.I do not have a perfect solution to this. But I do believe one thing helps:Find your people.People you do not have to constantly translate yourself for.People who understand why your brain works the way it does.People around whom you can slowly stop performing and just be yourself. That is a huge part of why I started this channel.A place where we can talk honestly about what ADHD feels like and realize:maybe I am not the only one.If you have ever felt lonely even when you technically were not alone, I would really like to hear what that feels like for you. What makes relationships difficult? What helps? And have you ever found a person or community where you finally felt understood? You’re not broken. You’re not alone. You’re just human.0:00 The Paradox of Connection in ADHD0:49 The Roots of Internalized Shame2:06 Understanding Rejection Sensitivity3:30 The Exhausting Cycle of Masking and People Pleasing9:55 Finding Your Neurodivergent Community#ADHD #ADHDLoneliness #AdultADHD #ADHDMasking #RejectionSensitivity #ADHDRelationships #NeurodivergentLiving with ADHD can be a profoundly isolating experience, even when surrounded by people. Adult ADHD, in particular, can lead to feelings of loneliness and disconnection, stemming from the unique challenges of navigating neurodiversity in a predominantly neurotypical world. ADHD relationships, whether romantic or platonic, can be especially affected by symptoms such as rejection sensitivity, also known as rejection sensitive dysphoria or RSD, which can make individuals with ADHD feel like they are walking on eggshells, never knowing when they might inadvertently offend someone or be rejected. This can lead to anxiety, depression, and shame, causing people with ADHD to mask their true selves, hiding their struggles and feelings of loneliness. However, understanding and embracing neurodivergent identities can be a powerful step towards building a sense of community and connection. By exploring the complexities of ADHD and its effects on social interactions, individuals can begin to break down the barriers that contribute to feelings of loneliness and isolation. If You Have ADHD You Need To Know This GLP 1 Side Effect
Video descriptionIf you have ADHD and you’re taking, considering, or hearing about medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro, there’s one unexpected effect people keep talking about:less food noise, fewer cravings, and sometimes feeling more focused. In this video, I take a closer look at what people with ADHD are actually reporting, what current research says about GLP-1 receptor agonists, reward, cravings, addiction, and brain function, and where the evidence still falls short.GLP-1 medications are not approved treatments for ADHD, and we do not currently have convincing clinical evidence that they directly treat core ADHD symptoms. But that doesn’t mean the experiences people are reporting are meaningless.People are describing things like:- quieter mental noise- fewer intrusive thoughts about food- reduced cravings- improved task initiation- better focus- less sensory seeking- less impulsive behaviorSo what could be going on?Researchers are increasingly studying GLP-1 medications for effects beyond blood sugar and weight loss, including their potential influence on reward pathways, cravings, substance use, and cognition.I also look at the well-documented relationship between ADHD and obesity, and why improvements in things like eating patterns, metabolic health, sleep, and daily routines could potentially affect how ADHD feels in everyday life. And because lived experience matters, I also share several real-world reports from people with ADHD taking GLP-1 medications. The goal of this video is not to tell anyone to take a GLP-1 for ADHD.It is to ask a much more interesting question:If people with ADHD are repeatedly describing similar changes, what should researchers be looking at next?Research discussedDe Giorgi R, et al.GLP-1 receptor agonists in cognitive and mental health disordersNature Mental Health, 2025DOI: 10.1038/s44220-025-00390-xGLP-1 receptor agonists and risk of substance use disorders among US veterans with type 2 diabetesThe BMJ, 2026;392DOI: 10.1136/bmj-2025-086886Randomized controlled research on semaglutide and alcohol use disorder is also discussed, along with broader research into GLP-1 signaling, reward, and appetite regulation. If you take a GLP-1 medication and also have ADHD, I’d really like to hear your experience.Did you notice any change in:food noise?focus?impulsivity?motivation?sensory seeking?task initiation?Share what changed, if anything, in the comments. This channel is about lived ADHD experience, community, and the research that may help us better understand what we feel. You’re not broken. You’re not alone. You’re just human.0:00 Unexpected benefits for focus1:05 What the research says about cravings3:29 The complex relationship with obesity4:49 Real stories from the community#ADHD #GLP1 #Ozempic #Mounjaro #Wegovy #AdultADHD #ADHDResearch #ADHDMedication
