[…] And I see that's something that you've suggested to clients or other people in regard. That is indeed the ideal. And that is always recommended is the parents open the RESP, the grandparents gift money, We in Canada have no limitations on gifting from one generation down. Grandparents can easily gift to the parents. The parents can then contribute to the RESP. That should be the default thinking. The only time when it makes sense, I think anyways, for the grandparents to be opening the RESP is if there's an actual specific reason the parents should not have the RESP in their name, such as maybe they just are not good with money or maybe it's some kind of mixed family issues. potential for divorce or potential for bankruptcy, that type of stuff, then it might be safer to keep that in the grandparents' names.
