Lakeydra Houston: The Barriers Survivors Face in the Military
Military sexual trauma survivors face reporting barriers, retaliation, and systems that can prioritize institutional protection over survivor safety. In this episode, Lakeydra Houston shares her experience as a survivor and advocate while examining military culture, accountability, civilian oversight, trauma-informed support, and the need for systemic change. In this episode, Ben, Jennifer, and Lakeydra Houston discuss: The culture surrounding military sexual trauma Finding support beyond the military system The role of advocacy in creating change What accountability could mean for survivors and institutions Key Takeaways: [0:03:29] Reporting can carry serious personal and professional risks — Survivors may face retaliation, threats to their careers and benefits, reputational damage, and pressure to remain silent after reporting sexual abuse. [0:06:55] Reporting systems can undermine survivor safety — Commanders may learn survivors’ names through legal advisors despite reporting options intended to limit disclosure. [0:13:47] Trauma-informed training is needed in military response systems — Lakeydra describes victim shaming from law enforcement and security forces and advocates for better training on what survivors experience and how to connect them with appropriate resources. [0:16:51] Civil accountability could create greater transparency and prevention — Civil cases against governmental actors could expose institutional failures, hold those who enable abuse accountable, and create a safer environment for service members. "The military system is to protect the military's image. It's not to protect survivors." — Lakeydra Houston About Lakeydra Houston: Lakeydra Houston is a Veteran Commissioner, Social Impact Strategist, speaker, and award-winning advocate dedicated to creating stronger systems for veterans, survivors, and under-resourced communities. A former collegiate athlete and military leader, Lakeydra brings lived experience, leadership, and advocacy to conversations around transition, resilience, justice, and community impact. Her mission is simple: connect people to resources, create opportunities, and help communities move from surviving to thriving. Jennifer Storm: Finding Recovery Beyond Trauma and Addiction
National Recovery Month is an opportunity to recognize that recovery is real and possible, especially for survivors whose substance use may have developed as a way of coping with trauma. In this solo episode, Jennifer Storm shares her own experience with childhood sexual abuse and long-term recovery while exploring trauma, substance use, healthy coping mechanisms, treatment, and hope. In this episode, Jennifer discusses: The connection between sexual trauma and substance use Replacing harmful coping mechanisms with healthy tools for recovery Trauma therapy and the work of building long-term recovery Breaking stigma and creating hope through connection and support Key Takeaways: [0:03:42] Trauma can shape how survivors cope with overwhelming emotions — Survivors may turn to substances, food, sex, shopping, compulsive exercise, or other behaviors when they lack the tools and resources to process the effects of trauma. [0:06:09] Harmful coping mechanisms need healthy replacements — Substance use can become a survival mechanism for managing trauma, making it important to build other ways of coping rather than simply removing the behavior. [0:09:18] Healing trauma is part of sustaining long-term recovery — Therapy, writing, meditation, exercise, vulnerability, and learning to process difficult emotions helped Jennifer develop healthier ways to respond to trauma and its triggers. [0:16:10] Recovery becomes more possible through connection and support — Asking what support looks like, providing resources, and staying connected can help people move toward recovery without judgment, one step at a time. "We should welcome progress without deciding that the work is finished because it's not." — Jennifer Storm Resources Mentioned: FindTreatment.gov (http://findtreatment.gov) for substance use treatment and support in the United States 988 for immediate emotional crisis support Blackout Girl, Jennifer Storm’s memoir about her experience and recovery: https://jenniferstorm.com/book/blackout-girl/ (https://jenniferstorm.com/book/blackout-girl/) About Jennifer Storm: Jennifer Storm is an international public speaker with over twenty years of experience in non-profit management and governmental relations. Leslie Slingsby: What Children Need When They Disclose Abuse
What happens after a child discloses abuse can shape their path toward safety, healing, and justice. In this episode, Leslie Slingsby explains how trauma-informed care, multidisciplinary support, and specialized training can better support children and families. In this episode, Ben, Jennifer, and Leslie Slingsby discuss: Trauma-informed responses that put children’s needs first Mission Kids and its multidisciplinary approach to child advocacy How civil justice has driven institutional changes in child protection Practical safeguards, training, and resources that can help prevent abuse Key Takeaways: [0:03:42] Coordinated response reduces the burden on children and families — Mission Kids brings forensic interviews, medical care, mental health services, advocacy, law enforcement, prosecution, and child protection together. [0:07:12] An inconsistent system can make a child appear inconsistent — Separate documentation can make one interview look like three, while recorded interviews help preserve the child’s account. [0:16:10] Civil justice has driven major changes in child protection — Leslie points to the Boy Scouts, the Y, and the archdiocese as examples of stronger protections following civil justice cases. [0:29:51] Mission Kids is expanding access to specialized training — Its regional training facility includes a mock courtroom, mock apartment, and camera-equipped interview rooms for hands-on training. "I think that trauma-informed approach is essential, so that kids know that they come first before any case or criminal justice system or any civil system, like their needs come first." — Leslie Slingsby About Leslie Slingsby: Leslie Slingsby, LSW, is the CEO of Mission Kids Child Advocacy Center with more than two decades of experience in child advocacy, victim services, nonprofit leadership, and public policy. Eric DiMario: How Civil Justice Can Expose Abuse, Identify Survivors, and Drive Reform
Rhode Island has enacted sweeping civil statute of limitations reform for child sexual abuse cases, creating new opportunities for survivors to pursue accountability. In this episode, attorney Eric DiMario explains how the law was reformed, why civil litigation goes beyond financial compensation, and what it means for survivors and institutions. In this episode, Ben, Jennifer, and Eric DiMario discuss: Rhode Island's path to comprehensive statute of limitations reform Why civil litigation uncovers hidden perpetrators and institutional failures Legislative opposition and constitutional arguments surrounding reform The role of civil justice in survivor healing and institutional accountability Key Takeaways: [0:06:09] Rhode Island's reform required years of persistence — After failed legislative efforts beginning in 2019, Rhode Island enacted a comprehensive civil ‘window’/reform bill in 2026 that reopened the courthouse doors to child sexual abuse survivors. [0:09:12] Civil lawsuits can identify perpetrators and survivors — Litigation helps expose hidden offenders, identify additional survivors, connect victims with resources, and uncover institutional failures. [0:14:35] Delayed reporting should not shield institutions from accountability — Claims that evidence fades over time ignore the fact that institutions often delayed justice by concealing abuse. [0:20:33] Strong legal reform can reshape institutional responses — Broad civil accountability encourages organizations to report abuse promptly, strengthen safeguards, and reduce future cover-ups. "If they feel that they are somehow prejudiced by the passage of time, they have nowhere to look other than in the mirror." — Eric DiMario About Eric DiMario: Eric DiMario is an attorney at Kiernan Plunkett & Redihan whose practice focuses on civil litigation involving wrongful death, medical malpractice, premises liability, product liability, and other complex disputes. He has represented clients before the Rhode Island Superior Court, the Rhode Island Supreme Court, and the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island. Jennifer Freeman: Holding Powerful Institutions Accountable for Child Sexual Abuse
Child sexual abuse survivors often face significant barriers when seeking accountability. In this episode, attorney Jennifer Freeman discusses statute of limitations reform, civil litigation, institutional responsibility, and the ongoing fight for survivor justice. In this episode, Ben, Jennifer, and Jennifer Freeman discuss: Legal and legislative barriers facing child sexual abuse survivors Civil litigation as a tool for accountability and systemic change Institutional failures in responding to abuse allegations Emerging challenges involving child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and online exploitation Key Takeaways: [0:05:02] Statute of limitations reform can reopen paths to justice — A child sexual abuse case filed in 1995 was revived decades later through legal reform, creating a new opportunity for accountability. [0:07:50] Institutional failures can prolong abuse for years — The Jeffrey Epstein case shows how ignored reports and inadequate responses can allow offenders to continue harming victims before accountability occurs. [0:20:12] Civil litigation serves purposes beyond compensation — For many survivors, lawsuits are about being heard, uncovering the truth, holding wrongdoers accountable, and helping prevent future abuse. [0:32:37] Technology has created new risks for child exploitation — Online platforms, smartphones, and CSAM-related offenses have expanded opportunities for abuse, increasing the need for stronger safeguards. "There should be no statute of limitations when it comes to child sex abuse — there just should be none." — Jennifer Freeman About Jennifer Freeman: Jennifer Freeman is a leading attorney advocate dedicated to protecting victims of sexual abuse, child pornography (CSAM), discrimination, and exploitation. Since filing her first child sex abuse case in 1995, she has secured hundreds of millions of dollars for survivors while holding powerful individuals and institutions accountable. Katie Muth: Why Survivors Are Still Waiting for Justice in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania's fight for child sexual abuse statute of limitations reform remains unresolved despite years of advocacy and public support. In this episode, Pennsylvania State Senator Katie Muth discusses the political and institutional barriers that continue to stall survivor-centered reform. In this episode, Ben, Jennifer, and Katie Muth discuss: Statute of limitations reform for child sexual abuse survivors Political and institutional barriers to survivor-centered legislation Civil litigation as a tool for accountability and transparency The role of public advocacy in driving legislative change Protecting future victims through systemic reform Key Takeaways: [0:06:58] Legislative gap in access to justice — Pennsylvania’s failure to enact a civil revival window continues to deny many child sexual abuse survivors access to the courts and may leave abusers and enablers unaccountable. [0:11:39] Leadership control and special-interest obstruction — Despite bipartisan support, leadership decisions, procedural hurdles, and lobbying efforts have repeatedly blocked a civil revival window. [0:25:10] How civil litigation creates accountability — Civil litigation can uncover abuse, expose institutional cover-ups, and hold enablers accountable, helping prevent future harm. [0:33:40] The imperative for sustained public pressure and voter engagement — Public awareness and voter engagement remain essential to advancing reform, as many Pennsylvanians are unaware that expired claims generally cannot be pursued. "I always think there's a chance, because I think that if the people are engaged and putting pressure, then there's always a chance." — Katie Muth About Katie Muth: Senator Katie Muth represents Pennsylvania’s 44th Senatorial District and has been a leading advocate for government accountability, transparency, and survivor-centered reform. First elected in 2018, she has championed efforts to expand access to justice for child sexual abuse survivors while also advancing legislation on veterans’ services, environmental protections, and student debt relief. LaQuisha Anthony: Giving Survivors Time, Voice, and Autonomy in the Fight for Justice
About LaQuisha Anthony: LaQuisha S. Anthony is a thought leader, educator, author, and nationally certified advocate who amplifies voices and promotes healing. She serves as the Manager of Advocacy at WOAR Philadelphia Center Against Sexual Violence and has devoted her career to empowering those impacted by sexual and gender-based violence. She played an intricate part in the historical change of the PA Sexual Assault Statute of Limitations in 2018, forcing an amendment to include college-age students. She studied at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania and completed an Executive Education Program at Harvard University as a Making Change Honorary. LaQuisha received the 2022 Governor's Victim Service Pathfinder Award, the NSRVC 2021 Visionary Voice Award, and honors from the Philadelphia City Council. She is passionate about changing the world in her generation while curating joy & being the best mother to her son, Asher Ryan. In this episode, Ben, Jennifer, and LaQuisha Anthony discuss: Survivor-led statute of limitations reform for young adults Cultural stigma and silence surrounding trauma in Black communities Therapy, faith, and community as pathways to healing Vision boards and community spaces as tools for empowerment Key Takeaways: It took LaQuisha 12 years to seek support after her campus sexual assault, reinforcing why survivors ages 18 to 23 need extended time to process trauma before pursuing civil justice. Her testimony before the Pennsylvania Senate Judiciary Committee helped secure the passage of Act 87, which now allows 18 to 23-year-olds in Pennsylvania to file civil claims until their 30th birthday. Trauma can fragment memory and distort behavior, and not recalling events in a linear way does not invalidate a survivor’s experience or credibility. Healing required a combination of therapy, faith, community, and reclaimed autonomy — particularly the ability for survivors to choose what happens next after sexual violence. "When you've experienced sexual violence, choices matter to a survivor, even the most minute choice matters. Give us autonomy and give us [the] opportunity to choose, even if it's something small." — LaQuisha Anthony Episode References: Philadelphia Center Against Sexual Violence (WOAR) 24/7 Crisis Hotline: 215-985-3333 Connect with LaQuisha Anthony: Website: https://www.woar.org/ (https://www.woar.org/) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/quisha.anthony (https://www.facebook.com/quisha.anthony) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/iam_thevoice/ (https://www.instagram.com/iam_thevoice/) Connect with Ben Andreozzi: Website: https://www.victimscivilattorneys.com/ (https://www.victimscivilattorneys.com/) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AndreozziandFoote/videos (https://www.youtube.com/@AndreozziandFoote/videos) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/andreozziandfoote/ (https://www.linkedin.com/company/andreozziandfoote/) X/Twitter: https://x.com/AndreozziFoote (https://x.com/AndreozziFoote) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AndreozziFoote/ (https://www.facebook.com/AndreozziFoote/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/andreozziandfoote/ (https://www.instagram.com/andreozziandfoote/) Connect with Jennifer Storm: Website: https://jenniferstorm.com/ (https://jenniferstorm.com/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/blackoutgirlauthor/ (https://www.instagram.com/blackoutgirlauthor/) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JenniferStormAuthor/ (https://www.facebook.com/JenniferStormAuthor/) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXAP8AOfFrlRq-DYCLBSYbA (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXAP8AOfFrlRq-DYCLBSYbA) Audio production by (https://www.turnkeypodcast.com/)Turnkey Podcast Productions. Andrea Constand: Breaking Silence, Seeking Justice, Finding Healing
About Andrea Constand: Andrea Constand is a Registered Massage Therapist specializing in medical massage. The New York Times has called her “the linchpin of the Bill Cosby case,” and the New York Daily News hailed her as “the true hero of #MeToo…the first female courageous enough to stand up to all the power of Hollywood and demand the impossible and win the unbelievable.” She has been the Director of Operations for Temple University’s women’s basketball program, a sports marketing specialist for Nike, and a professional basketball player in Europe. She lives in Toronto. In this episode, Ben, Jennifer, and Andrea Constand discuss: Speaking publicly about sexual assault despite fear, stigma, and institutional barriers How civil and criminal systems interact in high-profile sexual violence cases Media and cultural shifts that influence survivor credibility and public belief The emotional landscape of healing, empowerment, and survivor resilience Key Takeaways: Andrea’s decision to report her assault against Bill Cosby, a powerful public figure, revealed how secrecy, social pressure, and power imbalances can shape the experience of seeking justice when an alleged perpetrator holds cultural authority. After the district attorney (publicly) declined to prosecute, Andrea pursued a civil lawsuit that produced deposition testimony and admissions that materially altered the public record and understanding of her case, setting the stage for renewed scrutiny years later. About a decade later, renewed media attention and cultural shifts reignited Andrea’s stalled case, creating space for additional survivors to come forward and prompting a broader reevaluation of accountability and sexual violence. Andrea describes healing as reclaiming wholeness, self-worth, and community connection, emphasizing empowerment over apology, perfect closure, or conventional legal vindication. “Just knowing that you're enough, knowing that you're worthy, knowing that you can heal, knowing that you're significant, knowing that you're cared about, knowing that you're powerful, knowing that you're empowered, and being able to actually love yourself again after something like this — that's what healing looks like." — Andrea Constand Episode References: Andrea Constand Speaks Out About Cosby’s Release From Prison (NBC News): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_Z2I3sao_U (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_Z2I3sao_U) Andrea Constand, the Woman Bill Cosby Sexually Assaulted in 2004, Recalls the Traumatizing Abuse (People): https://people.com/crime/who-is-andrea-constand-bill-cosby-accuser/ (https://people.com/crime/who-is-andrea-constand-bill-cosby-accuser/) Andrea Constand v. How Families and Communities Can Better Protect and Support Survivors
This is the second of a two-part episode featuring Dr. Veronica Valliere, focusing on victim behavior, healing, and the role families, professionals, and communities play in prevention and recovery. About Dr. Veronique Valliere: Dr. Veronique Valliere is a licensed psychologist with over 30 years of experience in clinical and forensic psychology, recognized nationally and internationally as an expert witness, author, and educator in the field of interpersonal violence. She has trained the military, the FBI, the Department of Justice, and other major agencies, and has presented and testified both across the country and abroad, including before the U.S. Congress and in the Bill Cosby sexual assault trial. As the President and Clinical & Forensic Psychologist at Valliere & Counseling Associates, Inc., she specializes in behavioral analysis, risk assessment, domestic violence, and the treatment of violent offenders and their victims. Her work has been featured in outlets such as The New York Times, The Atlantic, PBS NewsHour, and CBS This Morning, and she is the author of multiple books, including Understanding Victims of Interpersonal Violence and Unmasking the Sexual Offender. In this episode, Ben, Jennifer, and Dr. Veronique Valliere discuss: Behavioral indicators and warning signs of child sexual abuse Communication, language, and consent in protecting children Trauma, healing, and the role of relationships in recovery Community responsibility, victim behavior, and systemic responses to abuse Key Takeaways: Children who have been sexually abused may show physical, emotional, or behavioral changes, but many show no outward signs at all, making open communication and education far more protective than relying solely on red flags. Using accurate anatomical language, teaching bodily autonomy, and distinguishing healthy versus unhealthy secrets equips children to recognize boundary violations and reduces offenders’ ability to exploit shame and silence. Healing from abuse is not linear and often resurfaces at different life stages, with relationships serving as both the original vehicle for harm and the most powerful pathway to recovery. Victim behavior that appears confusing or counterintuitive is typically a rational survival response shaped by trauma, offender influence, and social context, which is why community support and informed decision-making matter so deeply. "And it's important to understand that in this journey, trauma is not a static thing, like I said. It's fluid, and it changed its form, its nature, its flavor changes as we emotionally, cognitively, and socially develop." — Dr. Veronique Valliere Connect with Dr. Veronique Valliere: Website: https://www.vallierecounseling.com/ (https://www.vallierecounseling.com/) Email: drvalliere@vallierecounseling.com (mailto:drvalliere@vallierecounseling.com) Book: Unmasking the Sexual Offender: www.routledge.com/Unmasking-the-Sexual-Offender/Valliere/p/book/9780367741242 (http://www.routledge.com/Unmasking-the-Sexual-Offender/Valliere/p/book/9780367741242) LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/veronique-valliere-b088a73a (http://linkedin.com/in/veronique-valliere-b088a73a) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063498971252 (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063498971252) Connect with Ben Andreozzi: Website: https://www.victimscivilattorneys.com/ (https://www.victimscivilattorneys.com/) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AndreozziandFoote/videos (https://www.youtube.com/@AndreozziandFoote/videos) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/andreozziandfoote/ (https://www.linkedin.com/company/andreozziandfoote/) X/Twitter: https://x.com/AndreozziFoote (https://x.com/AndreozziFoote) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AndreozziFoote/ (https://www.facebook.com/AndreozziFoote/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/andreozziandfoote/ (https://www.instagram.com/andreozziandfoote/) Connect with Jennifer Storm: Website: https://jenniferstorm.com/ (https://jenniferstorm.com/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/blackoutgirlauthor/ (https://www.instagram.com/blackoutgirlauthor/) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JenniferStormAuthor/ (https://www.facebook.com/JenniferStormAuthor/) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXAP8AOfFrlRq-DYCLBSYbA (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXAP8AOfFrlRq-DYCLBSYbA) Audio production by (https://www.turnkeypodcast.com/)Turnkey Podcast Productions. Understanding How Sexual Offenders Manipulate Victims, Families, and Communities
This is the first of a two-part episode featuring Dr. Veronique Valliere, unpacking the behavioral patterns behind interpersonal violence and the mindset offenders rely on to avoid detection. Veronique Valliere discuss: Offender dynamics and the covert nature of sexual violence Grooming patterns that manipulate victims, families, and entire communities Psychological distortions that offenders rely on to justify abuse Barriers to accountability and why juries and systems often misunderstand victim behavior Key Takeaways: Sexual abuse typically occurs within trusted relationships, where offenders leverage emotional access, secrecy, and intimate knowledge of a victim’s vulnerabilities to facilitate covert offending. Grooming involves far more than kindness or gifts—offenders systematically violate boundaries, manipulate family dynamics, and even shape community narratives to pre-discredit the child. Many offenders derive sexual gratification not from the act itself but from control, manipulation, fantasy, and the ability to maintain a self-image of being “a good person,” which makes dismantling these distortions essential in treatment. Victims’ reactions—such as loyalty, affection, silence, or returning to the abuser—are predictable results of grooming, yet juries still expect “real victims” to behave in unrealistic ways, often harming legitimate cases. "When the allegations do come out, they’re not believed….[because] there's a grooming of not only the victim but the community that we often overlook." — Dr. Veronique Valliere Connect with Dr. Veronique Valliere: Website: https://www.vallierecounseling.com/ (https://www.vallierecounseling.com/) Email: drvalliere@vallierecounseling.com (mailto:drvalliere@vallierecounseling.com) Book: Unmasking the Sexual Offender: www.routledge.com/Unmasking-the-Sexual-Offender/Valliere/p/book/9780367741242 (http://www.routledge.com/Unmasking-the-Sexual-Offender/Valliere/p/book/9780367741242) LinkedIn: http://linkedin.com/in/veronique-valliere-b088a73a (http://linkedin.com/in/veronique-valliere-b088a73a) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063498971252 (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063498971252) Connect with Ben Andreozzi: Website: https://www.victimscivilattorneys.com/ (https://www.victimscivilattorneys.com/) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AndreozziandFoote/videos (https://www.youtube.com/@AndreozziandFoote/videos) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/andreozziandfoote/ (https://www.linkedin.com/company/andreozziandfoote/) X/Twitter: https://x.com/AndreozziFoote (https://x.com/AndreozziFoote) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AndreozziFoote/ (https://www.facebook.com/AndreozziFoote/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/andreozziandfoote/ (https://www.instagram.com/andreozziandfoote/) Connect with Jennifer Storm: Website: https://jenniferstorm.com/ (https://jenniferstorm.com/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/blackoutgirlauthor/ (https://www.instagram.com/blackoutgirlauthor/) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JenniferStormAuthor/ (https://www.facebook.com/JenniferStormAuthor/) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXAP8AOfFrlRq-DYCLBSYbA (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXAP8AOfFrlRq-DYCLBSYbA) Audio production by (https://www.turnkeypodcast.com/)Turnkey Podcast Productions. How Legal Strategy, Compassion, and Accountability Intersect in Sexual Abuse Cases
About Nathaniel Foote: Nate is a crime victim, personal injury, and wrongful death lawyer who litigates cases on behalf of assault, murder, rape, and child sexual abuse victims. Nate has represented survivors in lawsuits against churches, schools, hotels, bars, and other institutions that enable sexual and violent crime. Nate also represents families in wrongful death cases and those who have been catastrophically injured due to another's carelessness. Based in Pennsylvania, Nate is licensed in Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Texas, and Pennsylvania, and takes cases across the US. In the last few years, Nate served as co-counsel in several trials that resulted in significant jury verdicts for crime victims, including a $1.53 million verdict in a child sex abuse case and a $1.75 million verdict in a wrongful death/negligent security homicide case. Nate was co-counsel in a case that resulted in an $88 million verdict for a child sex abuse victim, one of the largest such verdicts in the United States. In this episode, Ben, Jennifer, and Nathaniel Foote discuss: Navigating the civil justice system in cases of child sexual abuse Understanding how institutions contribute to abuse and legal accountability Challenges attorneys face when building cases involving trauma and historic evidence Evolving societal awareness of grooming, trusted-authority abuse, and legal trends Key Takeaways: Survivors often seek justice, answers, and reclaimed power far more than financial compensation, and the civil system allows them to uncover what institutions knew and failed to stop. Historic abuse cases are difficult because evidence, records, and insurance may no longer exist, forcing attorneys to investigate decades-old institutional failures under active resistance from defense counsel. Civil cases frequently uncover information missed or overlooked in criminal investigations, and can even reignite stalled prosecutions when new evidence surfaces through discovery. Many survivors are still turned away because intra-familial abuse rarely provides a viable pool of recovery, making honest, difficult “no” conversations a painful but necessary part of the work. "Almost nobody calls us and says, ‘You know, I want money.’ They want, you know, a sense of justice. They want answers. They want to…take back the power that was taken from them." — Nathaniel Foote Connect with Nathaniel Foote: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nathaniel-l-foote-esq-56abb5b/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/nathaniel-l-foote-esq-56abb5b/) Connect with Ben Andreozzi: Website: https://www.victimscivilattorneys.com/ (https://www.victimscivilattorneys.com/) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AndreozziandFoote/videos (https://www.youtube.com/@AndreozziandFoote/videos) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/andreozziandfoote/ (https://www.linkedin.com/company/andreozziandfoote/) X/Twitter: https://x.com/AndreozziFoote (https://x.com/AndreozziFoote) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AndreozziFoote/ (https://www.facebook.com/AndreozziFoote/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/andreozziandfoote/ (https://www.instagram.com/andreozziandfoote/) Connect with Jennifer Storm: Website: https://jenniferstorm.com/ (https://jenniferstorm.com/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/blackoutgirlauthor/ (https://www.instagram.com/blackoutgirlauthor/) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JenniferStormAuthor/ (https://www.facebook.com/JenniferStormAuthor/) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXAP8AOfFrlRq-DYCLBSYbA (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXAP8AOfFrlRq-DYCLBSYbA) Audio production by (https://www.turnkeypodcast.com/)Turnkey Podcast Productions. How Victims’ Rights and Trauma-Informed Lawyering Strengthen Justice
About Meg Garvin: Meg Garvin, MA, JD, MSt, is the Executive Director of the National Crime Victim Law Institute (NCVLI) and a Clinical Professor of Law at Lewis & Clark Law School, where she is recognized as one of the nation’s leading experts on victims’ rights. She has testified before Congress, state legislatures, and the Judicial Proceedings Panel on Sexual Assault in the Military, and currently serves on the Council on Criminal Justice. From 2017 to 2025, she was appointed by the Secretary of Defense to the Defense Advisory Committee on Investigation, Prosecution, and Defense of Sexual Assault in the Armed Forces, and has served on multiple state and federal advisory groups focused on victims’ rights and justice reform. A recipient of numerous national awards for leadership and advocacy, she holds degrees from the University of Iowa, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Oxford. In this episode, Ben, Jennifer, and Meg Garvin discuss: Evolving approaches to recognizing and enforcing victims’ rights in the justice system Integrating trauma awareness into legal practice and client advocacy The role of collaboration among attorneys, advocates, and prosecutors in achieving balanced justice Ongoing challenges and reforms are shaping how survivors experience the legal process Key Takeaways: When attorneys integrate trauma awareness into every stage of their work, survivors gain the understanding and confidence needed to participate meaningfully and make informed choices throughout their cases. Justice feels most complete when survivors are consistently included, informed, and treated with dignity—ensuring their voices are central rather than peripheral to the legal process. The most effective outcomes emerge when victims’ rights lawyers, civil attorneys, and prosecutors collaborate closely, combining expertise to ensure survivors are represented both ethically and compassionately. Although most states now have victims’ rights statutes, genuine justice requires continued advocacy, education, and enforcement mechanisms to transform those rights from symbolic promises into practical realities. The Movement to End Institutional Secrecy and Expand Justice for Survivors
About Marci Hamilton: Marci A. Hamilton, JD, is a leading legal scholar, child protection advocate, and the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of CHILD USA, a nonprofit think tank dedicated to ending child abuse and neglect through legal reform and research. She is also a Professor of Practice in Political Science and a Fox Family Pavilion Non-Resident Senior Fellow in the Program for Research on Religion at the University of Pennsylvania. A nationally recognized expert on child sex abuse statutes of limitations, Hamilton has advised legislators in nearly every state and successfully argued before the U.S. Supreme Court in Boerne v. Flores. She is the author of Justice Denied: What America Must Do to Protect Its Children and God vs. the Gavel: The Perils of Extreme Religious Liberty, and continues to shape policy and public understanding of child protection, constitutional law, and institutional accountability. In this episode, Ben, Jennifer, and Marci Hamilton discuss: Statutes of limitations and their impact on survivor justice Civil legislation as a tool for truth and accountability Institutional and political resistance to reform efforts Prevention, education, and cultural change in child protection Key Takeaways: Statutes of limitations prevent thousands of survivors from seeking justice, silencing their voices and allowing abusers and institutions to avoid accountability long after the harm is done. Civil window laws that reopen expired claims not only empower survivors but also expose the hidden scope of abuse, forcing institutions to reform and communities to confront uncomfortable truths. The cost of inaction is immense, as untreated trauma leads to lifelong emotional, physical, and financial consequences that are often shouldered by families, taxpayers, and society at large. Despite lobbying from religious institutions, insurance companies, and unions to maintain secrecy and limit liability, bipartisan reform efforts and survivor advocacy continue to drive national and international progress in access to justice and prevention. The Power of Trauma-Informed Forensic Interviews in Child Protection
About Jackie Block Goldstein: Jackie Block Goldstein, MSW, LSW, is a nationally recognized forensic interviewer and victim specialist with over 20 years of experience in child advocacy, trauma-informed investigation, and victim assistance. She currently works as a private consultant, providing expert training, testimony, and guidance to law enforcement, multidisciplinary teams, and legal professionals nationwide. Previously, she served as a Supervisory Child/Adolescent Forensic Interviewer with the FBI and a Forensic Interview Specialist and Victim Assistance Specialist with Homeland Security Investigations. Ms. Goldstein holds a Master’s degree in Social Policy and Practice from the University of Pennsylvania and is a licensed social worker in Pennsylvania. In this episode, Ben, Jennifer, and Jackie Block Goldstein discuss: The evolution and purpose of forensic interviewing in child sexual abuse cases How trauma-informed, multidisciplinary approaches protect and support victims The psychological and emotional dynamics of child sexual abuse disclosure The critical role of adults in prevention, response, and advocacy Key Takeaways: Modern forensic interviewing relies on one specially trained, trauma-informed interviewer working within a coordinated multidisciplinary team to protect the child from repeated questioning, reduce emotional harm, and ensure that evidence is gathered in a reliable, neutral way. Parents should focus on supporting and calming their child before a forensic interview—avoiding investigative questions or rehearsal—by keeping their language neutral, reassuring them that the interviewers are safe adults, and trusting the process to unfold naturally. The disclosure of child sexual abuse is rarely immediate or complete; it unfolds gradually as children balance fear, shame, and trust, which means that delayed or partial disclosures are common and must be met with patience, compassion, and belief. Trauma-informed, survivor-centered approaches—whether in law, advocacy, or education—are essential to create spaces where victims feel safe and respected, helping them share their experiences without retraumatization or blame. "Not talking about it doesn’t make it go away—all it does is allow it to thrive, because we’re not having a conversation about it." — Jackie Block Goldstein Connect with Jackie Block Goldstein: Website: https://traumatrialexperts.com/ (https://traumatrialexperts.com/) Email: jacquelineblock@hotmail.com (mailto:jacquelineblock@hotmail.com) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jackieblockgoldstein/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/jackieblockgoldstein/) Connect with Ben Andreozzi: Website: https://www.victimscivilattorneys.com/ (https://www.victimscivilattorneys.com/) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AndreozziandFoote/videos (https://www.youtube.com/@AndreozziandFoote/videos) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/andreozziandfoote/ (https://www.linkedin.com/company/andreozziandfoote/) X/Twitter: https://x.com/AndreozziFoote (https://x.com/AndreozziFoote) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AndreozziFoote/ (https://www.facebook.com/AndreozziFoote/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/andreozziandfoote/ (https://www.instagram.com/andreozziandfoote/) Connect with Jennifer Storm: Website: https://jenniferstorm.com/ (https://jenniferstorm.com/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/blackoutgirlauthor/ (https://www.instagram.com/blackoutgirlauthor/) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JenniferStormAuthor/ (https://www.facebook.com/JenniferStormAuthor/) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXAP8AOfFrlRq-DYCLBSYbA (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXAP8AOfFrlRq-DYCLBSYbA) Audio production by (https://www.turnkeypodcast.com/)Turnkey Podcast Productions. Chris Kirchner: Breaking Silence and Building Safer Futures for Children
About Chris Kirchner: Chris Kirchner, MSW, is the Executive Director of the Children’s Advocacy Centers of Pennsylvania and has worked in the field of child welfare for thirty-four years. For twenty-eight of those years, she served as Executive Director of the Philadelphia Children’s Alliance, an accredited children’s advocacy center where she oversaw collaborative investigations of an average of 160 child sexual abuse cases per month. She also led a federal project funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention to provide training and technical assistance to northeastern communities working to improve their response to child abuse cases. In her statewide role, Chris continues to support existing and developing programs across Pennsylvania, bringing her passion for child advocacy and her commitment to ensuring children and families receive the coordinated care and resources they need to heal after abuse. In this episode, Ben, Jennifer, and Chris Kirchner discuss: The evolution and purpose of Children’s Advocacy Centers in responding to child abuse How multidisciplinary teams coordinate across child welfare, law enforcement, medical, and mental health providers Trauma-informed practices in forensic interviewing and child-centered investigations The growing focus on prevention, awareness, and long-term healing support for survivors Key Takeaways: By videotaping forensic interviews, Children’s Advocacy Centers reduce the need for children to repeat their stories in court, sparing them retraumatization while also strengthening the integrity of evidence used in both criminal and civil proceedings. Extended forensic interview protocols were developed to meet the needs of children who are too fearful or hesitant to disclose abuse in one sitting, allowing trust to build gradually over multiple sessions at the child’s pace. Pennsylvania’s investment in CACs, supported through birth certificate fee revenue and the Penn State Sandusky settlement, has expanded access to telehealth, evidence-based mental health treatment, and prevention initiatives that would otherwise be underfunded. With over 10,900 children interviewed in Pennsylvania’s CACs in 2024—nearly 8,000 for sexual abuse—data underscores both the scope of abuse and the critical role CACs play in coordinating investigations and connecting survivors to long-term healing resources. "When there’s an allegation of sexual abuse, kids have to be interviewed by child welfare, law enforcement, prosecution, medical, mental health, and those agencies inadvertently might cause more harm than good if they’re not collaborating on these cases." — Chris Kirchner Connect with Chris Kirchner: Website: https://penncac.org/ (https://penncac.org/) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ChildAdvocacyPA/ (https://www.facebook.com/ChildAdvocacyPA/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/childadvocacypa/ (https://www.instagram.com/childadvocacypa/) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/penncac/ (https://www.linkedin.com/company/penncac/) Connect with Ben Andreozzi: Website: https://www.victimscivilattorneys.com/ (https://www.victimscivilattorneys.com/) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AndreozziandFoote/videos (https://www.youtube.com/@AndreozziandFoote/videos) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/andreozziandfoote/ (https://www.linkedin.com/company/andreozziandfoote/) X/Twitter: https://x.com/AndreozziFoote (https://x.com/AndreozziFoote) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/AndreozziFoote/ (https://www.facebook.com/AndreozziFoote/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/andreozziandfoote/ (https://www.instagram.com/andreozziandfoote/) Connect with Jennifer Storm: Website: https://jenniferstorm.com/ (https://jenniferstorm.com/) Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/blackoutgirlauthor/ (https://www.instagram.com/blackoutgirlauthor/) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JenniferStormAuthor/ (https://www.facebook.com/JenniferStormAuthor/) YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXAP8AOfFrlRq-DYCLBSYbA (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXAP8AOfFrlRq-DYCLBSYbA) Audio production by (https://www.turnkeypodcast.com/)Turnkey Podcast Productions. Whether you're a survivor, an advocate, or someone who wants to be part of the solution, Justice Interrupted invites you to listen, learn, and take action. Because justice delayed is justice interrupted—and it's time we changed that.
