Armenian social workers working wth Refugees from Nogoro Karabach
In this episode of Kafe Sosial we revisit the theme of practicing social work in crisis situations. In a previous episode we heard about the closure of the Lachin corridor between Armenia and Nogorno Karabakh, also known as Artsakh. This episode described the blockade of Nogorno Karabakh and the challenges Armenian social workers faced trying to reach and help people trapped there. The day we published this episode in September 2023, and Azeri troops began bombing Nogorno Karabakh leading to a mass exodus of the local population, through the Lachin corridor to safety in Armenia. In this episode, we revisit the social workers of Armenia supporting a population in crisis,Brita Gjerstad , Associate Professor at UIS talks to social workers from Yerevan University in Armenia about what it is like to work in these crisis situations. I denne episoden av Kafe Sosial tar vi opp igjen temaet om å praktisere sosialt arbeid i krisesituasjoner. I en tidligere episode hørte vi om stengingen av Lachin-korridoren mellom Armenia og Nagorno-Karabakh, også kjent som Artsakh. Denne episoden beskrev blokaden av Nagorno-Karabakh og utfordringene armenske sosialarbeidere møtte når de prøvde å nå og hjelpe folk som var fanget der. Episode 14: Avoiding the Self Licking Lollipop: The positive impact of gender diversity and perspective in war, peace and energy.
With the upcoming Womens Day on the 8 March, we focus in this podcast on female representation in traditionally male dominated arenas. However, our discussion is equally relevant in female dominated environments where male diversity is a must and many others where diversity of any kind is essential in maximising effectiveness and innovation. Norske Shell and NATO’s Joint Warfare Centre are well known employers here in Stavanger. Being linked to the oil/energy industry and NATO/military, these are both organisations that have been traditionally male dominated. But, in what ways can diversity, and, more specifically gender diversity, positively impact these organisations? What risks are posed by a lack of gender diversity? What can we learn from each other about how to tackle this, and, importantly, are we seeing and stimulating changes both in mindset and in concrete actions? In this podcast Sarah Denieul from the Joint Warfare Centre and Mark Wildon from Norske Shell talk with Sarah Hean, University of Stavanger about strategies and challenges to achieve gender diversity. They question whether an organisation becomes a “self licking lollipop” if a gender perspective is not brought to the table. In other words, that without diversity, organisations are in danger of following an unchallenged and stagnant path with no purpose or benefit other than to sustain the status quo. The green transition will be one of the biggest transitions we and future generations will experience in our lifetime. 11. Familierådslag med Randi Mortveit
Familieråd gir barn, unge og familier mulighet til å selv løse problemer og utfordringer de står i. Metoden gir gode rammer for medvirkning, empowerment og opplevelse av sammenheng. Familieråd er en metode som i hovedsak brukes i barnevernet i Norge. I podcasten snakker vi om metoden og verdigrunnlaget. Vi kommer også innom hvilke muligheter metoden gir, og hvilke hindringer som være til stede. The Norwegian Family Advice Services give children, young people and families the opportunity to take ownership and resolve their own challenges as makes most sense to them. The service provides a framework for promoting participation, empowerment and connection within the family during vulnerable times. 10. Familievernkontoret – Samtaleforløp for foreldre som har barn i institusjon eller fosterhjem
Familievernet har et nasjonalt spisskompetansemiljø for foreldreoppfølging etter omsorgsovertakelse, som blant annet arbeider med å videreutvikle og kvalitetssikre et tilbud til foreldre med barn i fosterhjem eller på institusjon. Heidi Susort og Kristi Jorunn Solheim er to av til sammen fire personer som jobber i dette spisskompetansemiljøet. De vil i denne episoden snakke mer om familievernets tilbud til foreldre etter omsorgsovertakelse. Å bli fratatt omsorgen for egne barn er utvilsomt svært krevende, og de aller fleste blir sterkt følelsesmessig preget av denne situasjonen. For mange er det vanskelig å oppsøke hjelp etterpå, særlig fra barneverntjenesten har vært medvirkende til at omsorgsovertakelsen har funnet sted. Andre kan kjenne seg handlingslammet, eller mangle kunnskap om hvor de kan søke hjelp. Familievernet tilbyr hjelp til foreldre etter omsorgsovertakelse, på foreldrenes egne premisser. Det betyr at tilbudet er frivillig, og foreldrene velger selv tema for samtalene. Å etablere, eller styrke samarbeidet med barneverntjenesten er et naturlig tema å snakke om, men familievernet kan ikke samarbeide med barneverntjenesten uten ønske og samtykke fra foreldrene. Samtalene på familievernkontoret handler i stor grad om å bearbeide vanskelige følelser og styrke foreldrenes mestringstro. Andre ganger handler samtalene om å trene på bestemte foreldreferdigheter, med tanke på å styrke relasjonen til barnet. Noen familievernkontor tilbyr i tillegg gruppetilbud for foreldre etter omsorgsovertakelse, hvor foreldrene får mulighet til å møte andre i samme situasjon. Family Welfare Services in Norway aim to provide high quality support to parents whose children have been taken into care, and then homed with foster parents or in children´s homes. Heidi Susort and Kristi Jorunn Solheim are two of a team of four people here in Stavanger who work in this challenging environment. In this episode, they talk with Wenche Hovland from the Department of Social Work at UiS about how family welfare service support parents during this time. Having one ´s children removed from your care is emotionally traumatic for most parents. Many find it difficult to seek the help they need to handle this, especially from the child welfare services who removed their children in the first place. Many feel paralysed by their lack knowledge of where to seek help. Family Welfare services provides this help. They do so on the parents’ own terms. This means the parents engage with the service on a voluntary basis, and they choose the themes they would like to discuss. Establishing or strengthening cooperation with child welfare services is often one of these themes. Family welfare services may help them build this cooperation but this is always at the parents’ request and with their consent. Further, parents can talk to Family Welfare offices about processing the difficult feelings they are experiencing and strengthening their resilience and ability to cope with their situation. 9. FEB – foreldre etter brudd, et veiledningsverktøy til barnets beste
FEB – Foreldre etter brudd er et veiledningsprogram som er utviklet av Hege Jangsett og Hanne Aurbakken for Sandnes barnevernstjeneste. Når konflikten eller manglende samarbeid mellom foreldre etter samlivsbrudd er vedvarende og andre instanser ikke har klart å hjelpe, kan det utvikle seg til en situasjon der barnet trenger hjelp av barnevernstjenesten. Hege Jangsett og Hanne Aurbakken har utarbeidet et veiledningsprogram som de anvender i Sandnes barnevernstjeneste. Prosessen består av samtaler med barna, undervisning og refleksjon med foreldrene i grupper, og samtaler med foreldreparet. Programmet har vist seg å kunne hjelpe barn og foreldre ut av en fastlåst situasjon. Nå skal FEB evalueres av forsker ved UiS, IS. Episode 9, FEB – Interventions supporting parenting after divorce: guiding collaborations between parents in the best interest of their children A sustained conflict or lack of cooperation between parents after a family break-up is detrimental to the children involved. Several welfare services may become involved but if the problem persists, and other bodies have not been able to help, child protection services may be approached for help. FEB – (Parents after divorce) is a guidance programme developed by Hege Jangsett and Hanne Aurbakken from Sandnes child protection services in Norway. This programmeencourages children to share their experiences of the conflict, offers parents training in managing their co-parenting and facilitates peer group reflection for parents participating in the programme. The intervention helps children and parents break free from the deadlocks they have fallen into after the family breakup. FEB is currently being formally evaluated by the University of Stavanger. 8. It is tough and you are enough: the role of emotion in prison work
Fengselsmiljøet har flere sårbare forhold. For insatt kan tiden i fengsel være den mest sårbare perioden i deres livet. Samtidig kan det være utfordrende for fagfolk som jobber i et så lukka miljø å møte egen og andres sårbarhet. The prison environment is an environment in which most of us may feel vulnerable. For prisoners this may be one of the most vulnerable times of their lives, but it may be a hard place for the professionals working here also. 7. Fedre i møte med barnevernet / Men are vulnerable too: fathers in contact with child protection services
Reform – ressurssenter for menn er et likestillingssenter for menn og i denne episoden møter vi Mali Storbækken og Ina Slaveykov som forteller om Reforms arbeid for å heve kompetansen om farskap i barnevernet, slik at de i større grad kan involvere far i arbeidet sitt. Jonny Jahren arbeider som erfaringsformidler ved Stavanger Barnevernstjeneste, og han deltar også i denne episoden, i dialog med Reform. Etter barnevernsloven skal barnevernstjenesten samarbeide med foreldre i alle faser av en barnevernssak, samtidig som fedre selv sier at de kan oppleve seg som annenrangs forelder i møte med barnevernet. De opplever at de ikke blir inkludert i egen barnevernssak på lik linje med mor. Reform ved Ina og Mali viser til det arbeidet de gjør for å forsøke både å hjelpe fedre til å ta mer plass i egen barnevernssak, samtidig som ansatte må gi far den plass han har krav på. We often focus on the vulnerability of women and the experience of mothers but men are vulnerable also. According to the Child Protection Act, the child protection services must cooperate with parents in all phases of a child protection case. However, many fathers say they feel like a second-class parent when dealing with child protection services. They experience that they are not included in their own child protection case on an equal basis with the mother. Reform is a center specializing in supporting the equal treatment of men. In this episode Wenche Hovland from the Social Work Department at University of Stavanger meets Mali Storbækken and Ina Slaveykov to talk about Reform’s work to ensure the voices of fathers are heard in child protection services. They talk with Jonny Jahren, a father and expert service user at Stavanger Child Welfare Services. 6. Foreldresamarbeid i barneverntjenesten
Syv erfaringsformidlere fra Stavanger Barnevernstjenesten underviste studenter som går 2. år på barnevernspedagogstudiet ved UiS, en dag i november 2022. Etter at foreldrene både hadde foreleste for studentene i plenum og møtt dem gruppevis for å gi veiledning, gikk 2 foreldre, Inger Lise og Renate, og en student, Victoria, sammen med en lærer og gjorde opptak til Kafe Sosial. Vi ønsket å videre prate om ulike forhold knyttet til foreldresamarbeid og dele det med lytterne av Kafe Sosial. Etter barnevernsloven skal barnevernstjenesten samarbeide med foreldre i alle faser av en barnevernssak. I denne episoden møter vi Inger Lise og Renate som forteller hva de mener skal til for å få til gode samarbeidsrelasjoner mellom foreldre og kontaktpersoner i barnevernet. De trekker også frem ulike forhold som kan utfordre samarbeidet. Vi møter også Victoria som forteller hva hun som student har lært i undervisningen som ble gitt av foreldrene. According to the Child Welfare Act, the child welfare service must cooperate with parents in all phases of a child welfare case. The parental perspective is therefore key to the success of these interactions. Students on the Child Welfare education programme at UiS meet with, and learn from, parents who have previous contact with Child Welfare services. They deliver lectures and meet with students to talk about their experiences. In this episode of Kafe Sosial, two of these parents, Inger Lise and Renate , and a student, Victoria, talk with Dr Wenche Hovland from the UIS social work department about their views about the need for parental cooperation with child welfare services. Inger tells what she, as a student, has learned in the lessons given by these parents. 5. Building Bridges and finding balance in diversity: is domestic violence a diversity issue?
Working smarter means working and learning with and from people with diverse perspectives and skills. But bringing these differences to a work setting, may mean we face negative discrimination. This can makes us feel vulnerable. Promoting the acceptance and tolerance for diversity is necessary to build an effective workplace community. In our second episode about diversity, we hear the perspective of Dr Patrycja Sosnowska Buxton, talking with Prof Sarah Hean about some of the challenges of implementing a meaningful diversity strategy. They talk especially of seeing diversity as more than just a gender and ethnicity, issue but also about lived experience such as domestic violence and how employers, such as the University support their staff in these vulnerable situations. Patrycja is a post doctoral fellow at the department of social work at the University of Stavanger. I vår andre episode om mangfold hører vi Dr Patrycja Sosnowska Buxton, som prater med Prof. Sarah Hean om noen av utfordringene ved å implementere strategier for mangfold i arbeidslivet. 4. Building Bridges and finding balance in diversity: a higher education perspective
Working smarter means working and learning with and from people with diverse perspectives and skills. But bringing these differences to a work setting, may mean we face negative discrimination. This can makes us feel vulnerable. Promoting the acceptance and tolerance for diversity is necessary to build an effective workplace community. Stavanger, as a uniquely multinational town, has diveristy, equity and inclusion high on many organisational agendas. In four episodes of Kafe Sosial, we explore how different organisations in the region view and implement this agenda. We share these perspectives to build bridges between our organisations, learn across sectors and to do things better together. In our first episode, we hear a university perspective. Prof Sarah Hean from the University of Stavanger talks to Prof Maryan Koehler, University of Denver, Colorado about what diversity means in higher education and what universities can do to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in our staff and student community. Maryan is an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado with a Doctorate in Education (Ed.d) from Durham University, UK. She spreads her working life between the US and Stavanger, Norway. Det å jobbe smartere betyr å jobbe og lære med og fra mennesker med ulike perspektiver og ferdigheter. Samtidig kan det føre til negativ diskriminering der vi kan føle oss sårbare. Det blir viktig å fremme aksept og toleranse for mangfold for å bygge et effektivt arbeidsmiljø. 3. På gulvet: innovative tiltak for å styrke foreldrenes forståelse av barnets behov
I denne episode vil vi høre om tiltaket “ På gulvet” et tiltak som er utviklet av Sandnes barnevernstjeneste ved Marit Klemp Stephansen og Marthe Bjørnes. “på Gulvet” er et veiledningstiltak, der veileder og foreldre sitter sammen med barnet på gulvet for å legge til rette for et samarbeid mellom veileder og foreldre for å utforske hva barnet trenger av mor og far, slik at foreldre på sikt selv kan bedre se og imøtekomme barns behov.Wenche Hovland Første amanuensis som underviser ved Universitetet i Stavanger har samtale med Marit Klemp Stephansen og Marthe Bjornnes for å få mer kunnskap om dette innovative tiltaket. Students and new staff working in Child Protection services need to hit the road running. 2. Barnevernloven er i endring
I denne episode vil vi høre om de endringer jurister ser som spesielt betydningsfulle for saksbehandlingen i barnevernet. I tillegg vil en ansatt i den kommunale barneverntjenesten kommentere på hva disse endringene betyr for deres arbeid. Vi hører fra Pia Moum Hellevik og Julia Køhler– Olsen som begge er jurister og underviser ved Universitetet i Stavanger og OsloMet, samt Marit Klemp Stephansen fra Sandnes Barneverntjeneste. 1. Intro til Kafé Sosial
We all feel vulnerable at some point in our lives and may need the support of others to help us through. Kafé Sosial is an inclusive forum where multiple voices unite (practitioners, industry, client, citizens, researchers, educators) in informal conversations on the many experiences of vulnerability and of the working lives of services that support us. In Kafe Sosial, we discuss the many areas where we may feel vulnerable. We record conversations between people of varied perspectives all of whom have some responsibility for supporting the vulnerable. Kafe Sosial is is a place where we can cross boundaries; an informal place for a mutual exchange and respect of knowledge and expertise. It is a place for informal conversations between people from universities, welfare and other organisations and where we can learn from each other. This is a hybrid series with conversations in both English and Norwegian language. The podcast is for any listener interested in making lives better and hearing different perspectives on how to do this. In this episode Associate Professor Wenche Hovland talks to the editor of Kafé Sosial Professor Sarah Hean about the history and purpose of the Kafé Sosial podcast series.
