Astronauts Return After 10 Months in Space, Blazars & Why Earth & Mars Are So Different

On this episode of Kalam Astro, host Alya Al-Nuaimi brings you stories of human courage, cosmic fireworks, and one of the greatest planetary mysteries in our solar system. We open with a triumphant homecoming: four astronauts — Commander Jessica Meir, pilot Jack Hathaway, French ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot, and Russian cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev — splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean off California on October 8th, after spending 10 incredible months aboard the International Space Station. Traveling aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule at 28,000 km/h, orbiting Earth roughly 16 times a day, their return is a testament to international cooperation in space and the resilience of the human spirit. Then we turn our eyes to the far reaches of the universe to discover blazars — cosmic lighthouses more powerful than anything in the known universe. These supermassive black holes are aimed directly at Earth, beaming jets of energy across billions of light-years, and scientists have just discovered a spectacular new one. And finally, we explore one of astronomy's most fascinating questions: why are Earth and Mars so different? Born in the same solar neighborhood, at roughly the same time, from the same cosmic materials — yet one is a vibrant, living world, and the other is a cold, barren desert. The answer may lie in their ancient histories and the role of water, magnetism, and cosmic collisions. We also look ahead to the 2026 Chandra eclipse and what promises to be a landmark year for astronomy in 2026–2027! World Space Week: Cosmic Collisions, Mars' Ancient Ice & NASA's Mystery Mission

As World Space Week continues, Kalam Astro host Alya Al-Nuaimi brings you more cosmic wonders to celebrate humanity's place in the universe! We open with a spectacular phenomenon captured by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope: planets smashing into each other in a distant solar system — a cosmic car crash on an unimaginable scale. These planetary collisions shaped our own solar system billions of years ago, and JWST is now letting us watch the same process happening in real time around other stars. Then we head to Mars — and the possibility of something extraordinary. Could Mars be hiding pristine, untouched ice, frozen and preserved since the very beginning of the solar system? This isn't just any ice — it could be a time capsule, containing ancient information about the early history of our solar system, locked away in a freezer for billions of years. And the big reveal: NASA has announced a brand-new mission called PRIME (Planetary Remote Imaging Mission Explorer) — described as something that will completely change how we explore space. Details are still emerging, but scientists promise it will go places and do things no mission has ever done before. World Space Week (October 4–10) is celebrated in over 100 countries. Whether you're a stargazer, a scientist, or just someone who looks up at the sky and wonders — this week is for you! World Space Week Special: Hubble's 200,000th Orbit, Life on Enceladus & Sputnik at 69

Kalam Astro is back with a special World Space Week edition! Host Alya Al-Nuaimi brings you three milestone stories that span 69 years of human space history — from the very first satellite to a moon that might harbor alien life today. We begin on October 4th, 1957 — the day humanity changed forever. The Soviet Union launched Sputnik, a small 84-kilogram metal sphere, becoming the first human-made object to orbit Earth and igniting the Space Race. 69 years later, we celebrate its legacy on World Space Week! We also celebrate another milestone: NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has completed its 200,000th orbit around Earth. After 34+ years in space, Hubble celebrated this achievement by capturing a breathtaking image of a supernova — a dying star's explosive final flash. Remarkable for a telescope that was once considered nearly broken! Then we dive into the most exciting search in the solar system: the hunt for life on Enceladus, Saturn's tiny icy moon. Beneath its frozen crust lies a warm, salty liquid ocean — and scientists have now confirmed that the conditions inside that ocean could support microbial life. Laboratory experiments recreating Enceladus's ocean chemistry are showing that microorganisms can survive there. Plus, we preview the Sharjah Space and Astronomy Hub's World Space Week events (October 4–8) — planetariums, observatories, meteorites, and more! And Saturn is at its closest and brightest to Earth this October — perfect for stargazing!
