Sermon Notes: A Prophet’s Life – The Story of Hosea
Introduction: Marriage as an Illustration
The prophet Hosea was asked by God to perform a difficult and unconventional act: marrying a woman who was a prostitute. This served as a living illustration of the relationship between God and Israel.
Just as a marriage covenant requires faithfulness and the forsaking of all others, God called Israel to be faithful to Him.
This marriage metaphor extends to the New Testament, where the Church is described as the bride of Christ.
The Message of Hosea
Prophets were often asked to do tough things: God’s call on Hosea’s life was public and humiliating, yet it was necessary to convey the gravity of Israel’s spiritual unfaithfulness.
The Cycle of Idolatry: Israel turned to other gods (such as Baal) for provision, protection, and agricultural success. God allowed them to face the consequences of these choices to help them realize that He is the only true source of every good and perfect gift.
Defining an Idol: An idol is anything we rely on for blessing, help, or guidance in place of a wholehearted reliance on the true and living God.
God’s Redeeming Love
Despite Israel’s rebellion, God’s ultimate desire was to win them back. He promised to lead them to a place of restoration, transforming their “valley of trouble” into a “gateway of hope.”
This is a messianic prophecy pointing toward the new covenant. Through Jesus Christ, God redeems those who were once called “not loved” or “not my people” and brings them into an everlasting relationship with Him.
Application: What does your story tell?
We are called to be a faithful bride, living in covenant with our redeeming Savior.
The paths of the Lord are true and right. While sinners may stumble, those who trust in the Lord with all their heart and acknowledge Him in all their ways will find their paths made straight.
If your life were a story that others could learn from, what would it say about your relationship with God? The goal is for our lives to show that we are 100% sold out to Jesus, understanding that our provision, grace, and salvation come from Him alone.

Sermon Notes: A Prophet’s Life (The Book of Haggai)
Overview Andy Bratton explores the Old Testament book of Haggai, a brief but powerful message focusing on the importance of divine priorities. The central theme centers on the people of Judah returning from exile, who had prioritized building their own comfortable homes while leaving the Temple of the Lord in ruins.
Key Takeaways
Aligning Priorities: God challenges the people’s perspective, noting that despite their efforts, they were not finding satisfaction or abundance because they had neglected the Temple. God calls His people to put Him first in their lives, resources, and time.
The Call to Work: God commands the people to “get to work” and rebuild. This serves as a reminder for believers today to work with a sense of purpose, performing tasks as if working for the Lord rather than for human masters.
Fear and Obedience: True knowledge and the beginning of wisdom come from the “fear of the Lord.” When the people recognized God’s authority, they responded with obedience, which sparked renewed enthusiasm for the work at hand.
Overcoming Discouragement: Looking back at the former splendor of the first temple, the people felt discouraged by their current progress. God encourages them to be strong and courageous, promising that His spirit remains among them and that the future glory of this house will exceed its past.
Avoid Defilement: The message highlights the importance of maintaining spiritual purity. Holiness is not easily transferred through proximity, but sin and neglect can quickly lead to being defiled by the world.
Practical Application
Examine Your Heart: Are there areas in your life, time, or finances where you have placed personal comforts before God’s kingdom?
Be Strong and Courageous: Regardless of current resources or perceived lack of skill, trust that God is the one who empowers the work when we step out in obedience.
Trust the Process: Just as God promised to bless the people from the day they laid the foundation of the temple, we are encouraged to trust that God can move in big ways when we re-prioritize Him.

Jeremiah
The message presented by Jeff Badgero, who takes on the persona of the biblical prophet Jeremiah, focuses on a call for repentance and turning back to God.
Key themes in the message include:
The Burden of the Prophet: Badgero describes his divine calling from a young age to act as a prophet, emphasizing his initial reluctance and God’s promise to provide the words he should speak.
God’s Disappointment with Israel: Jeremiah recounts various “field trips” or lessons God provided, such as the linen belt and the potter’s house, to illustrate the moral decay and corruption of the people of Israel and Judah.
A Call for Personal Change: The message stresses that despite the collective failures of the nation, individual accountability is required. He urges listeners to repent and change their hearts to escape the metaphorical “yokes” of sin and slavery.
Hope and Freedom: Badgero emphasizes that God is loving and patient, offering freedom to those who turn away from their transgressions and follow Him.
