Seven-Year-Old K9 Shadow Still Rules the Games | Kansas City News
Seven-year-old police dog Shadow stole the show at the K-9 Games in Topeka, winning first place in the high-stakes “Keyless Entry” event — a real-world agility challenge that mimics police work. While speed isn’t his strong suit anymore, Shadow’s confidence, intelligence, and love for the job carried him through a daring course involving tunnels, truck jumps, and suspect apprehensions. His handler, Corporal Josh Doncouse, calls him his best friend and marvels at how Shadow learns fast, thrives on action, and even overcame early training hurdles like a sensitive stomach. Despite retirement looming, Shadow shows no signs of slowing down — he’d rather be in the squad car than home, driven by purpose and pure joy in his work.

Kennedy Center Closure Sparks Legal Battle | Kansas City News
A federal judge has slapped a 30-day notice rule on the Kennedy Center, halting any major physical changes after President Trump threatened to tear it down — just as the center abruptly shut down due to structural dangers. The closure, triggered by a roof collapse and canopy issues, sparked a lawsuit from a Democratic congresswoman who called it unlawful. While Trump chairs the board and tied repairs to his name being added to the building, the judge blocked demolition without advance warning. Even Barbra Streisand called the drama “painful to witness,” and lawmakers are furious that politics have hijacked a cultural landmark — with some warning of massive backlash if Trump follows through.

Lawrence’s New Municipal Hub Opens | Kansas City News
Lawrence just unveiled its brand-new Municipal Services and Operations campus — a massive, weather-protected hub for city departments and equipment, complete with indoor vehicle storage that’s a game-changer for crews. Mayor Brad Finkeldei, attending his first-ever tour, was impressed, as were two former mayors who helped make it happen. Director Melissa Sieben and Commissioner Amber Sellers praised the project, highlighting how it honors the community’s role in building this essential infrastructure — with Phase 2 already underway to expand even further.
