   KASS Live with Renee Shaw

In this episode of KASS Live, Renee Shaw, Director of Public Affairs and Moderator at KET and one of Kentucky's most respected voices in public affairs journalism, joins the conversation to share what more than 25 years of covering the legislature, the courts, and the issues shaping Kentucky communities has taught her about how education policy gets made, communicated, and understood by the public. From the pressures of legislative sessions to the long arc of issues like mental health, workforce, and criminal justice reform, Shaw offers school leaders a candid, experience-rooted perspective on how the stories told about public education shape the political environment superintendents have to lead in. For Kentucky superintendents, this episode carries a direct message: the media landscape is not just a backdrop to the policy work. It is part of the work. Understanding how public affairs journalism functions, and how to engage it with clarity and credibility, is one of the most underused tools in a superintendent's leadership toolkit.

From the daily work of building protective cultures to the long-term realities of community recovery, D'Angeles offers school leaders a grounded, experience-rooted perspective: safety is not a system to install, it is a culture to build. For Kentucky superintendents, this episode carries a direct message -- the most important investment any leader can make is knowing their people and being known by them.
