Sahitya Patra - Episode 05 - The New Era in Assamese Theatre Post-independence
The country became independent from the British rule. But the independence for which the Indians fought for 200 years unfortunately seemed to be a distant dream. There was the pain of partition, then economically and socially the independent Indian citizens were facing never-faced-before problems. But they also understood what freedom means. Theatre as well as social changed radically. Assamese theatre started its journey towards a new era. With the departure of historical, mythological and religious plays, intense social consciousness started to take a prominent place in Assamese theatre.

The reality of Bengali drama changed with the onset of the People's theatre movement or Gananatya Andolan. The language of protest gradually came up in the plays rejecting the so far popular stories of the ancient kings, mythological gods, and goddesses. This is definitely a milestone in pre-independence India.
