[…] It was an odd thing for First Lord of the Admiralty. So like most people, his record was mixed. But the thing that I think is most, one of the things that is most impressive about many things are is that he continued to develop. He developed both from experience, but we need to remember he really was a first-rate historian. So one of his books, which I always recommend to people, even though it's six fat volumes, is his biography of the Duke of Marlborough, which if you read it, of course, it's beautifully written. And it's a piece of historical scholarship. It still stands up pretty well. But it's also, in a way, a meditation on coalition warfare. […]
