Introducing Rider Assist - the official MAGNZ app
Pete tells listeners about Rider Advantage, an important new initiative from MAGNZ. Takeaways: MAGNZ is launching Rider Advantage, a free progressive web app for Kiwi riders to manage bikes and connect — no app store drama required. Pete talks through the functions My Bikes stores registrations, WOFs, exemption dates, and reminds you about three‑month licensing holds so you don't miss deadlines. Rider Assist is designed as a mates‑helping‑mates feature for non‑emergency roadside aid, not a replacement for calling 111 in serious situations. Motobed will help travelling motorcyclists find motorcycle‑friendly accommodation and expand with user contributions — please add listings, even a tent pitch if you've got room. Privacy and security were built in from day one: we collect minimal data, use modern authentication, and enforce tightly controlled admin permissions. We're in beta by design — test it, break it, tell us what's confusing. Sign up in the first week and go into a draw to win one of five special MAGNZ Keep It Twisted shirts.

Gary - Riding Against Teen Suicide
Pete chats with Gary Anderson - a keen motorcyclist who tours New Zealand in his motorcycle sidecar combination, accompanied by his dog Pippinz. Gary talks about his volunteer work with Kairo's Suicide Awareness Ride and Riders Against Teen Suicide. He describes how rising motorcycle registration levies hit pensioners and charity riders hard, squeezing essential volunteer work. Pete also shares an important update about the Judicial Review. Takeaways: Gary's story touring New Zealand with a sidecar and dog — a brilliant human-and-canine outreach model that sparks conversations about suicide in small communities. We confronted the stark reality — around six hundred suicides annually in New Zealand — a national crisis far exceeding road toll figures and demanding community dialogue. Sidecar riding has a steep learning curve but offers practical perks: ample luggage space, a warm canopy for Pippinz, and an unbeatable conversation-starter. We urge listeners to join MAGNZ, follow Cairo's Suicide Awareness Ride online, and support local rides before rising costs diminish vital grassroots mental-health outreach. Key dates: • 25 September – ACC & Crown evidence • 23 October – Mark’s evidence • 30 October – Common bundle • 23 November – Substantive hearing in Wellington We explain what the common bundle is, why 25 September is critical, and what MAGNZ will be looking for when the respondents file their evidence. The epiosde includes a warm welcome to recently affiliated motorcycle clubs. Visit magnz.org.nz (https://magnz.org.nz/) for more information Head to keepittwisted.co.nz/booking (https://www.keepittwisted.co.nz/booking) to schedule a recording session with Pete Takeaways: The High Court action regarding motorcycle registration levies is a crucial topic that affects every Kiwi rider. Mark Chappell's case against the ACC is progressing, with key deadlines set for evidence submissions. The upcoming hearing on November 23rd will delve into the legality of the motorcycle levy regulations. A detailed comparison of sworn evidence against ACC documents will be essential for the case's success. MAGNZ Calls for Transparency: Are Motorcyclists Getting a Raw Deal?
Pete is back with an update on Freedom of Information Disclosures received by MAGNZ. Learn more about the Motorcycle Advocacy Group New Zealand at www.magnz.org.nz (https://magnz.org.nz/) Takeaways: The rising costs of motorcycle registration in New Zealand are alarming, especially for bikes over 750cc, with significant increases projected by 2027. MAGNZ highlights the lack of thorough analysis regarding motorcycle accident compensation levies, calling for transparent and fair models based on actual risk factors. Despite the government's ability to impose higher levies, they neglected to explore fairer alternatives such as distance-based charging for motorcyclists. A staggering 46% increase in the ACC levy for larger motorcycles corresponds with a 30% drop in license months purchased, indicating unsustainable practices. The government abandoned a proposed distance-based charging model that could have better reflected motorcycle usage and risk without conducting proper analysis. MAGNZ urges political accountability, demanding that parties clarify their positions on motorcycle ACC levy policies ahead of the elections.

Rob shares stories of their volunteer work, detailing the physical and emotional challenges faced while helping cyclone victims in devastated areas. The podcast also touches on the significant increase in motorcycle levies, addressing concerns about fairness and the need for equitable treatment across all vehicle types. Motorcycle clubs like Centurions play a crucial role in community charity, significantly impacting local causes and fostering a spirit of giving. As Rob puts it, motorcyclists should not be unfairly targeted; they contribute greatly to society through both charity and responsible riding.

How Were ACC's Levy Sausages Made? A Response to John Williams's Article in The New Zealand Herald
No guest this week — instead Pete shares MAGNZ’s considered response to an opinion piece published in the New Zealand Herald on 19 August 2026. Written by John Williamson (chairman of Roadsafe Northland and the Northland Road Safety Trust), the article largely backed ACC’s decision to increase motorcycle levies. In this episode, Pete examines the claims made in the article and asks some important questions about how those levies are calculated. Key takeaways: Very few politicians standing in the November election are talking about the ACC motorcycle levy increases — and even fewer are exploring fairer funding models. The widely quoted “4% of vehicles / 20% of costs” statistic doesn’t stand up to closer scrutiny. ACC’s own data and methods contain significant gaps, assumptions and unmatched claims. Charging by engine capacity is a blunt instrument that ignores how, when and how far a bike is actually ridden. Levying every registered motorcycle as if it is constantly on the road creates a “garage-space tax” rather than a true activity-based levy. Transparency matters. Before riders are asked to pay more, ACC should show the full recipe behind the numbers. Read the article by John Williamson in The Herald HERE (https://www.nzherald.co.nz/northern-advocate/news/acc-motorcycle-levy-rises-as-riders-cover-more-crash-costs-john-williamson/C6EDMXUPNVH53NEMIHMRQSYQQA/) Read MAGNZ's written response at https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18tRZwyS2W/ (https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18tRZwyS2W/) Find out more about our campaign against ACC Motorcycle Levy increases at https://magnz.org.nz (https://magnz.org.nz) Grab your limited edition Keep It Twisted tubular scarf at https://buy.stripe.com/bJedR85Wyex2c1h7YH4c800 (https://buy.stripe.com/bJedR85Wyex2c1h7YH4c800)

The podcast underscores the importance of providing a platform for motorcyclists to share their stories and advocate for fair treatment in the face of increasing costs. Ian expresses his frustration with the one-size-fits-all approach of ACC levies, advocating for a system that considers individual rider history and risk levels. The discussion highlights the need for transparency and communication between ACC and motorcyclists, as listeners await further developments from recent court decisions. Listeners will gain insights into the new affiliation scheme by MAGNZ, aimed at building a stronger community voice for motorcyclists across New Zealand.

Mark Chapple: The Case Against ACC
The rising cost of motorcycle registration in New Zealand has left many riders feeling frustrated and unjustly penalized. In today's episode, Pete talks with Mark Chapple, who has transformed months of data research into a High Court challenge against the ACC's controversial levy structure. Mark argues that the current system unfairly conflates injury costs with risk assessment, leading to exorbitant fees that do not reflect real-world riding risks. He walks us through the key legal aspects of his case, shedding light on the tactics employed by Crown lawyers and how riders can support this cause through a protest ride to the High Court. Join us as we delve into this critical issue that impacts every motorcyclist in the country and aims to restore fairness to the registration process. Takeaways: The rising costs of motorcycle registration in New Zealand are becoming unbearable for riders, leading to significant public outcry. Mark Chapple's legal challenge against ACC aims to expose the flawed risk assessment methods used to calculate motorcycle levies. The ACC's approach conflates injury costs with risk calculations, which undermines the fairness of the levy system applied to motorcyclists. The upcoming court hearing represents not just a personal battle, but a crucial public law challenge affecting all New Zealand motorcyclists. Protest rides and community support play a vital role in raising awareness and pushing back against unjust regulations imposed by authorities. The complex relationship between motorcycle ownership and perceived risk needs to be reassessed to ensure fairness in the ACC's charging structure.
