They Silenced The Canary - But Left Media Will NOT Stay Quiet

Right, so, we have officially lost the Canary folks. They have had to shut up shop after repeated banking disruption, preventing them from functionally being able to operate as a business, thereby silencing them by default. Journalists were very much still there, still committed to their reporting. Readers were still there. They were on the up, they’d even begun circulating a physical newspaper not all that long ago. But when you can’t reliably access your own money, when you’re being debanked, then eventually you can’t keep operating. The establishment has found a way to silence voices they don’t like, all while still of course claiming a commitment to free speech and freedom of expression. Skwawkbox, who had joined with the Canary several months ago is now resuming reporting on its own site and has indeed carried this story today as it’s first release under its own header, but the Canary’s loss deserves answers, we all deserve answers, because if the powers that be can get away with doing this once, they know they can get away with it again. As a fellow independent left publisher, I am as you might imagine utterly disgusted and appalled by this. We spend our time finding stories, checking what powerful people say and trying to reach an audience without a millionaire paying the bills, all in order to hold power to account when more and more people are becoming aware that mainstream newspapers and TV news channels simply don’t do that. It’s the reason so many of us popped into existence. Apparently we also need to worry about whether the money readers have already given us, more often than not the only income many of us receive for our work, will actually be available when somebody needs paying, when we have to cover our own costs of living, because that was the immediate problem the Canary described. Wages delayed. Freelancers waiting. Projects cancelled. Even a payment needed to keep the website online was interrupted. Readers could want the journalism, journalists could be ready to produce it, and the work could still grind to a halt.

Burnham’s North Sea Oil Plans Just Hit A MAJOR Israel Problem

Right, so Andy Burnham is approaching a North Sea oil decision with an awkward Israel problem attached to it, because when isn’t there an Israel problem attached to a UK government. His administration has promised sanctions against companies helping to fund or expand illegal settlements. But one of the businesses that could benefit from Rosebank has a majority shareholder named in the UN’s settlement-business database. That shareholder is Delek. It owns more than half of Ithaca, which owns a fifth of Rosebank. And according to Scottish Independent news outlet The Ferret, a recent dividend from Ithaca’s existing operations meant just under £100 million for Delek. Now Rosebank obviously hasn’t started producing yet. But approving it could give Ithaca another source of earnings, with Delek among the owners standing to benefit. Israel standing to benefit. Which puts a fairly obvious question in Burnham’s lap. Does his government believe Delek should face restrictions under its settlement policy? If so, what happens to their oil plans in which case? And if not, why not? It’s a rather inconvenient moment for the tough talk to meet the shareholder register isn’t it?

Did Israeli Spyware Just HACK Your Phone While Shopping?

Right, so Google has cut an Israeli advertising company off after researchers caught its operation helping deliver spyware through online adverts. Discover-Tech had found a way to make those irritating little interruptions considerably nastier. You didn’t have to click. You didn’t have to download anything. Loading the advert could be enough for a selected device to come under attack. All those years of telling people to be careful what they click, and these enterprising little swines had decided to dispense with the whole clicking bit. The company presented itself as an ordinary advertising business. Find the audience, deliver the advert, collect the money. Except Citizen Lab’s investigation linked its advertising infrastructure to spyware attacks on devices at Al Jazeera. The newsroom had noticed unusual activity and helped researchers investigate. Someone trying to watch journalists had attracted some rather unwelcome attention themselves. Google subsequently terminated Discover-Tech’s access to its advertising exchanges. An operation that depended on reaching people had lost an important means of getting to them. But how had it acquired that access to begin with? Discover-Tech had appeared on Google’s approved and certified vendor lists. It had the reassuring credentials. It was inside the advertising business, where a website owner could accept its involvement without knowing what might follow when an advert loaded. And for the person using the device, there might be nothing obviously wrong to notice.
