In this message from The Prayer Effect series, we look at Jesus’ parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector in Luke 18:9–14 and discover how the way we pray reveals what we truly trust. While one man approaches God with a résumé of his religious accomplishments, the other comes with nothing to prove and simply cries out, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” Through this powerful contrast, we’re challenged to examine whether we’re trusting in our own goodness, comparing ourselves to others, or depending fully on God’s mercy. The good news of the Gospel is that we can never earn our way into God’s favor—we are saved by His grace through faith in Jesus Christ, who did for us what we could never do for ourselves. True prayer begins when we stop trying to prove ourselves and humbly trust in the mercy of our Savior.

Have Mercy On Us
What does your prayer life reveal about what you really believe about Jesus? In Matthew 9, two blind men cry out to Jesus, “Have mercy on us,” believing that He is able to do what they cannot. Their story challenges us to bring our real needs to Jesus, pray with confidence in His power, and trust Him even when we don’t have a guarantee of how things will turn out. Faith doesn’t mean we have all the answers—it means we know who we’re trusting. As we learn to get out of the boat, pray boldly, and surrender control, we discover that the focus of our faith isn’t the strength of our faith, but the One our faith is in. Jesus is able. Jesus is good. Jesus is merciful. The question is: do we believe it?

God Delivers
When Hezekiah faced an impossible situation, his response wasn’t passivity—it was prayer. In 2 Kings 19:14–19, we see what it looks like to bring our struggles honestly before God while choosing to see them through eyes of faith. Prayer begins not with our circumstances or our desired outcome, but with God Himself. Instead of seeking first our own deliverance, we’re invited to seek God’s glory and trust that He is at work. This message challenges us to pray differently—not simply asking God to change our situation, but asking Him to reveal His power, accomplish His purposes, and glorify His name.
