The Horror Chronicles Special Presentation: Carrie (2026) Review
For the first time in Horror Chronicles history, we're stepping away from our journey through horror's past to examine one of the year's most talked-about horror releases: Carrie (2026), Mike Flanagan's bold reimagining of Stephen King's first published novel.
What happens when Carrie's tragedy unfolds in the age of Instagram, cyberbullying, viral humiliation, and online outrage?
For six episodes, I was convinced this might become the most emotionally powerful adaptation of Carrie ever put on screen. With its haunting documentary-style structure, outstanding character development, phenomenal soundtrack, expanded mythology, and surprisingly deep exploration of modern cruelty, the series transforms King's story into something terrifyingly relevant for a new generation.
But then came prom night.
In this deep-dive review, I'll break down every episode, compare the series to Stephen King's original novel and Brian De Palma's legendary 1976 film, analyze the historical telekinesis cases featured throughout the documentary segments, explore the unexpected connection to horror pioneer Georges Méliès, and discuss why one of the strongest first halves of any modern horror series ultimately left me conflicted by its final act.
Topics include:
🩸 The CarrieRed social media storyline and modern bullying
🩸 Matthew Lillard's standout performance as Principal Grayale
🩸 Moran's transformation from principal to guidance counselor
🩸 The Emaline mystery and telekinetic mythology
🩸 Historical paranormal figures like Nina Kulagina and Eusapia Palladino
🩸 The documentary framework and what it means in the finale
🩸 The soundtrack's role in making Carrie's tragedy feel real
🩸 The George Méliès references and connections to early horror cinema
🩸 Why the 1976 prom sequence remains untouchable
🩸 The controversial ending and setup for a potential second season
Was this the smartest Carrie adaptation ever made?
Or did its ambition ultimately undermine what made Carrie White's story so powerful in the first place?

The Horror Chronicles Chapter 4: The Rise of Gothic Horror (1903-1905)
Early horror cinema hits a crossroads.Across three pivotal years, the genre transforms from playful devils and chaotic trick films into something darker, deeper, and unmistakably modern.
In this episode, we trace the evolution from the infernal mischief of The Black Imp and The Infernal Cave to the emotional, gothic heartbeat of Esmeralda — a lost film that still casts a long shadow as the earliest window into the monster‑driven stories that will define the next era.
We explore how 1903’s supernatural chaos gives way to 1904’s gothic tragedy, and finally to 1905’s first flicker of the sympathetic monster. This is the moment horror stops being a magic trick… and starts becoming myth.

The Horror Chronicles Chapter 3: The Rise of Narrative Horror (1901-1902)
Early horror takes a massive leap forward as cinema moves from simple tricks to true storytelling. In this episode, we explore how 1901 introduces the first real narratives in horror, and how 1902 expands the genre’s boundaries with cosmic fantasy, infernal imagery, and even real‑world catastrophe. From Méliès’ supernatural experiments to the haunting recreation of the Mount Pelée eruption, these two years reshape what horror can be — imaginative, ambitious, and suddenly, deeply human.

The Horror Chronicles Chapter 2: The Evolution of Early Horror (1900)
Episode 2 dives into the turn of the century, where Georges Méliès and his contemporaries push the genre beyond simple illusions and into something stranger, funnier, and more unsettling. From demonic transformations to dream‑logic nightmares, this year marks the moment horror begins to understand its own potential.
We explore every surviving—and lost—horror and horror‑adjacent film from 1900, tracing how these early experiments shaped the genre's language. And as always, we end with our updated rankings, placing each film in both the decade list and the overall canon.
The magic tricks are still here… but something darker is starting to form beneath them.
