Counterfeit or Authentic: The True Cost of Discipleship | Mark 14:1-10 | Austin Glenn

What does it truly mean to follow Jesus? Mark 14:1–11 opens with a striking contrast that forces us to examine the condition of our own hearts. On one side, we see religious leaders plotting against Jesus and Judas preparing to betray Him. On the other, we encounter an unnamed woman who breaks open an alabaster jar of pure nard, worth an entire year's wages, and pours it over Jesus in an extravagant act of devotion. Through this striking contrast, we see the difference between counterfeit and authentic discipleship. Counterfeit discipleship maintains a polished outward appearance of faith while secretly treasuring self-interest, personal ambition, or hidden sin. Authentic discipleship, however, is marked by a wholehearted, public, and costly devotion to Jesus that holds nothing back. Though those around her consider her offering wasteful, Jesus declares it a beautiful thing and promises that her story will be told wherever the gospel is proclaimed. Two thousand years later, her example still challenges us to examine our own hearts. Are we genuinely devoted to Jesus, or have we become skilled at maintaining the appearance of faith while quietly living for ourselves? True devotion doesn't come from trying to earn Christ's love, but from recognizing our own sinfulness and responding with deep gratitude for the grace secured through His death and resurrection. The central question this passage places before us is not merely theological, but is deeply personal: is our devotion to Jesus authentic, or have we become skilled at maintaining the appearance of faith while quietly living for ourselves? — Mark 14:1-10 The Plot to Kill Jesus It was now two days before the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him by stealth and kill him, for they said, "Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar from the people." Jesus Anointed at Bethany And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head. There were some who said to themselves indignantly, "Why was the ointment wasted like that? For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor." And they scolded her. But Jesus said, "Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me. She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial. And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her." Judas to Betray Jesus Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them.

Finding Security in an Uncertain World | Mark 13 | Austin Glenn

In a world that feels increasingly unstable, we often find ourselves searching for something solid to hold onto. This message takes us deep into Mark 13, one of the most complex and debated passages in all of Scripture, and draws out a truth that is both sobering and profoundly liberating: institutions fail, but God's kingdom prevails. Walking through the historical backdrop of the Jerusalem temple, one of the ancient world's most magnificent structures, we see how even the most impressive symbols of human power and religious pride are ultimately temporary. Jesus warned his disciples that the temple would be dismantled stone by stone, and history confirms that is exactly what happened in 70 AD. But the message does not stop at destruction. It moves toward hope, pointing us to the Son of Man who comes in clouds with great power and glory, gathering his people from every corner of creation. The promise is clear: no matter how dark the present age feels, there is a day coming when every tear is wiped away and the former things pass away entirely. For those of us navigating economic uncertainty, political anxiety, and cultural upheaval, this ancient word speaks directly into our moment and invites us to anchor our hope in a kingdom that cannot be shaken. — Mark 13: Jesus Foretells Destruction of the Temple 13 And as he came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Look, Teacher, what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!" 2 And Jesus said to him, "Do you see these great buildings? There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down." Signs of the End of the Age 3 And as he sat on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, 4 "Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?" 5 And Jesus began to say to them, "See that no one leads you astray. 6 Many will come in my name, saying, 'I am he!' and they will lead many astray. 7 And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains. 9 "But be on your guard. For they will deliver you over to councils, and you will be beaten in synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them. 10 And the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations. 11 And when they bring you to trial and deliver you over, do not be anxious beforehand what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour, for it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit. 12 And brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death. 13 And you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. The Abomination of Desolation 14 "But when you see the abomination of desolation standing where he ought not to be (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 15 Let the one who is on the housetop not go down, nor enter his house, to take anything out, 16 and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. 17 And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! 18 Pray that it may not happen in winter. 19 For in those days there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, and never will be. 20 And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect, whom he chose, he shortened the days. 21 And then if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is the Christ!' or 'Look, there he is!' do not believe it. 22 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible, the elect. 23 But be on guard; I have told you all things beforehand. The Coming of the Son of Man 24 "But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, 25 and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. 26 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27 And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. The Lesson of the Fig Tree 28 "From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 30 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. No One Knows That Day or Hour 32 "But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. 34 It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. 35 Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning— 36 lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. 37 And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake."

An Ordered Life | Mark 12:28-44 | Austin Glenn

What if the secret to a fulfilling life comes down to one simple question: What do you love most? In Mark 12, Jesus gives us a surprisingly simple answer: "Love God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength." But this isn't merely about feelings or emotions toward God. It's about what ultimately orients our entire lives. Augustine said, "Love is the weight by which we act." He described love as a force that pulls us toward whatever we have made most important. What we love shapes what we pursue, what we sacrifice for, what we fear losing, and ultimately, who we become. The problem isn't that we love too much. Often, we love the wrong things too much. Success, comfort, relationships, approval, money, achievement, or control can quietly take the place that belongs to God. And when lesser loves become ultimate loves, something inside us becomes disordered. We may have everything we thought we wanted and still feel restless. Are there places in our hearts where we've put up a No Trespassing sign? Areas we've surrendered to everything except God, including our time, ambitions, relationships, money, future, or the parts of ourselves we're determined to keep control over? Jesus gives us a picture of wholehearted love in the widow who offers two small coins. On the surface, she gives almost nothing. But Jesus sees what everyone else misses: she holds nothing back. Her story challenges us to ask: What am I still holding back? Rightly ordered love doesn't mean loving everything else less. It means loving everything else in the right place. When God becomes our greatest love, our other loves become healthier, freer, and more rightly ordered. Maybe the restlessness we feel isn't because we need more, but because our loves have been pulling us in too many directions. True satisfaction isn't found by adding another priority to our crowded lives, but by returning our greatest love to the center. Our hearts remain restless until they rest in Him. — Mark 12:28-44 The Great Commandment 28 And one of the scribes came up and heard them disputing with one another, and seeing that he answered them well, asked him, "Which commandment is the most important of all?" 29 Jesus answered, "The most important is, 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' 31 The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." 32 And the scribe said to him, "You are right, Teacher. You have truly said that he is one, and there is no other besides him. 33 And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices." 34 And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." And after that no one dared to ask him any more questions. Whose Son Is the Christ? 35 And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, "How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 36 David himself, in the Holy Spirit, declared, "'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand, until I put your enemies under your feet."' 37 David himself calls him Lord. So how is he his son?" And the great throng heard him gladly. Beware of the Scribes 38 And in his teaching he said, "Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes and like greetings in the marketplaces 39 and have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, 40 who devour widows' houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation." The Widow's Offering 41 And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny.[a] 43 And he called his disciples to him and said to them, "Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. 44 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on."
