Who Gets to Speak? Churches, Ballots & Double Standards

Pastor Will and Dr. Michael Huffman cover a mix of legal analysis, civic urgency, and some lighter moments, all tied to one central message: Christians should be informed and active in public life. They unpack a Dearborn lawsuit over religious favoritism, respond to a newspaper opinion piece about Virginia’s amendments, and push back on voter apathy among believers. In this episode, they also discuss why the Constitution, equal treatment, and the First Amendment matter for local governments, churches, and citizens alike. Key topics In this episode, Pastor Will and Dr. Huffman discuss a lawsuit against Dearborn, where city funds were allegedly used to support Ramadan displays and celebrations while Christian and Jewish holidays were not treated the same. They explain why the issue is not whether a city can celebrate Ramadan, but whether it can do so while denying equal treatment to other faiths. They walk through how the Establishment Clause and Free Exercise concerns apply not only to Congress, but also to school boards, local governments, and other public bodies. They argue that taxpayers end up paying both for unconstitutional actions and for the lawsuits that follow. They discuss why Christians should not adopt a passive stance toward politics, including the idea that “only preaching Jesus” somehow excludes civic responsibility. They make the case that voting is a Christian duty when biblical principles are at stake, especially in local and state elections. They critique a letter to the editor from the Rappahannock News that argued churches should stay out of politics and claimed the amendments were harmless. They push back on the claim that Amendment 1 merely “enshrines current law,” arguing it creates a much more extreme abortion regime with no meaningful restrictions. They explain why Amendment 2 is not a harmless technicality, and why the article’s reference to Obergefell was legally inaccurate. They stress that churches are legally allowed to discuss issues and encourage voting, and that the Johnson Amendment does not silence them from civic education. They argue that the proper response to bad ideas is debate and transparency, not name-calling or threats to revoke church tax status. They close with a broader warning about abortion, assisted suicide, and the value of human life, tying those issues to the loss of a biblical view of human dignity.
