Kingpins & Catalysts tells the stories of First Coast legends—giants in their fields, people who have left an indelible mark on the city’s identity. In a series of revealing, long-form interviews, First Coast Connect Host Anne Schindler explores the connections between her guests’ personal experiences and their public impact, and how their stories also shaped the story of Jacksonville itself.
From Royalty to Revolution: Dr. Johnnetta Cole carries on a legacy of leadership
Dr. Johnnetta Cole’s legacy is nearly impossible to capture in a single conversation. As the first Black woman president of Spelman College, a civil rights activist, an anthropologist, and a leader in education and social justice, she has shaped institutions, movements and minds. But she is also deeply rooted in Jacksonville, tracing her lineage back to enslaved African princess Anta Majigin Njai and Florida’s first Black millionaire, Abraham Lincoln Lewis.
From growing up under Jim Crow to sitting at the seats of power, Dr. Cole shares her insights on race, education and the continuing fight for justice.

You Can’t Unhear the Truth: The Work of 904Ward and Dr. Kimberly Allen
For years, Dr. Kimberly Allen has led tough conversations about race, equity, and the systems that shape Jacksonville. As CEO of 904Ward, she has worked to bridge racial divides, uncover hard truths, and ensure that Jacksonville’s history is told honestly. But this work is personal. From the lessons she learned as a child to the racism her own children now experience, Dr. Allen’s mission is rooted in lived experience.
In this episode, she opens up about the defining moments that shaped her, the power of storytelling, and why she believes real change takes time, patience, and an open door—even for those who walk away from the work.
Since recording this episode, Dr. Allen announced in December 2024 that she is leaving 904Ward to take a new job in Texas. We wish her all the best.

He was involved in six police shootings. But nothing he did on the job could stem the violence that came for his own family. In 2015, his son Desi was murdered outside their home. Rebound: How Artis Gilmore Defeated The Odds and Helped Unify The City
Artis Gilmore’s journey is the definition of perseverance. Before he was a Hall of Famer, before he was an NBA star, he was a kid growing up in a segregated town in rural Florida, living amid poverty and racial terror. But basketball was his salvation. His size, drive and commitment led him to Jacksonville University, and eventually to the school’s unprecedented – and unreplicated – NCAA championship final. He would later go on to perform as one the most dominant centers in basketball history. But he recalls his time playing in Jacksonville as not just a highlight of his life, but a central piece of the city’s racial history.
In this episode, Gilmore reflects on his early struggles, the impact of sports on racial progress, and the legacy of the 1969-’70 “Cinderella team” that unified the communities of the First Coast.

A Former DEA Agent’s Toughest Case – His Own Son’s
Mark Baughman spent his career chasing criminals—with NCIS, DEA and running undercover vice and narcotics operations. But his belief in the justice system is tempered by personal experience, and a view that shifted when the war on drugs hit home. His own son, a former addict, is now serving a 20-year prison sentence.
In this episode, Baughman shares his story—his dedication to the rule of law, the toll his career took on his personal life and how his son’s incarceration has sharpened his perceptions about addiction, justice and the possibility of redemption.

‘Give them 5 minutes and listen’: Ken Amaro on what it means to be an advocate
For decades, Jacksonville knew Ken Amaro as the bow-tied crusader of consumer journalism—the man behind “I’m Telling Ken.” But his behind-the-scenes persona is more nuanced: passionate music fan, volunteer mediator, ordained pastor. Now, he’s taken his advocacy from the world of television into the fishbowl of politics. But does he have more power as a Jacksonville City Councilmember than he did as a reporter?
In this episode, Amaro reflects on his journey, from a childhood in St. Croix to a trusted voice in Jacksonville, exploring how journalism has changed, and the frustrations and realities of working inside the system instead of reporting on it.

Second Life: Dana Miller’s Journey from Crack Kingpin to Corner Barber:
Dana Miller’s life story is a study in extremes. A notorious kingpin during the crack scourge on Jacksonville’s Eastside, he once embodied the drug trade’s fast money, mortal danger and, ultimately, devastating loss. Shot 10 times, imprisoned for a decade and grieving the violent deaths of his brother and nephew, Miller reached a turning point.
Today, he’s working to repair the community he once chose to “tear down.” From the pulpit of his barbershop (https://www.instagram.com/explore/locations/212133409175343/the-man-cave-barber-shop-jacksonville/), he urges young people to choose a better path, even as he offers a unique service to families of murder victims: the difficult task of preparing their loved ones for an open casket viewing.
In this episode, Miller talks about his rise to drug kingpin, the despair he experienced even at his height, and his mission to repair the neighborhood he once harmed.

Hip-Hop, Heartbreak, and the Science of Storytelling: Willie Evans Jr. on Remixing Loss
What happens when a band is on the cusp of global dominance—only to have it all taken away? As part of the Jacksonville-based hip-hop group Asamov, Willie Evans Jr. helped create a sound that was both distinctly Duval and poised to reshape the Southern rap landscape.
But it never happened.
In this episode, Willie Evans Jr. (Niam Jones) explains how a cease and desist letter derailed the band—also composed of DJ Therapy (Paten Locke), Ja-One-Da (Joe Cox) and Basic (Buddy Vladimir Decastro)—and the profound impact of losing bandmates Locke and DeCastro.
He also reflects on the staying power of the band’s first, last and only album, “And Now (https://songwhip.com/asamov/and-now).”
But as his recent video-based project “Brown Wonder” and his new album, “Pine Box Parables” make clear, nothing can stop Evans from continuing to set the creative agenda on the First Coast.
