Kino Quickies 13 - The Gaunt Stranger (1938) with Adrian Smith

For our first film at a venue other than the Kino, Bermondsey (https://www.london-se1.co.uk/news/view/10715), we were delighted to be hosted on October 8th 2023 at the gorgeous Garden Cinema (https://www.thegardencinema.co.uk/) for our screening of The Gaunt Stranger (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0030174/)(1938). Based on a novel by Edgar Wallace (https://www.mysteryscenemag.com/article/3241-edgar-wallace-the-man-who-wrote-too-much), The Gaunt Stranger is the story of a mysterious criminal called "The Ringer" who, although supposedly dead, has threatened to kill a corrupt lawyer called Maurice Meister at a specific time and date. Directed by Walter Forde (https://www.screenonline.org.uk/people/id/451589/index.html) with a screenplay by Sidney Gilliat (https://www.screenonline.org.uk/people/id/460434/index.html), The Gaunt Stranger has a small place in history for being the first film to be produced at Ealing studios by Michael Balcon (https://www.screenonline.org.uk/people/id/447085/index.html). It stars Mr Jessie Matthews (https://www.nickelinthemachine.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/jessie-and-sonny-hale-at-their-wedding.jpg) himself, Sonnie Hale (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonnie_Hale), along with Patrick Barr (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Barr), Alexander Knox (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Knox), Wilfrid Lawson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilfrid_Lawson_(actor)) and the ever fragrant & delightful Patricia Roc (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patricia_Roc). Our guest for the Q&A was Dr Adrian Smith of the University of Sussex - not this Dr Adrian Smith of the University of Sussex (https://profiles.sussex.ac.uk/p16347-adrian-smith) or even this one (https://profiles.sussex.ac.uk/p8705-adrian-smith) but this one (https://profiles.sussex.ac.uk/p340345-adrian-smith). Adrian is on Twitter (https://twitter.com/retroramblings), has two podcasts - The Wild, Wild Podcast (https://shows.acast.com/wildwildpodcast) & Second Features (https://shows.acast.com/second-features) and recently published a book (https://www.creepy-images.com/en/books/NORMAN-J--WARREN---GENTLEMAN-OF-TERROR.html) about the late Norman J Warren (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0912981/). Kino Quickies 12 - Scrooge (1935) with Ming Ho

Scrooge (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0026972/) (1935) was the subject of our Christmas special and the last Kino Quickie of the season. It's the first ever talkie version of A Christmas Carol and stars Seymour Hicks (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seymour_Hicks), a man who had played the part hundreds of times before, on both stage and screen. It's not this Seymour Hicks (https://seymourhicks.com/) though. Our guest for the Q&A was the playright and screenwriter, Ming Ho (https://mbalit.co.uk/client/ming-ho-2/). Follow Ming on Twitter (https://twitter.com/Minghowriter). The Kino Cinema was packed to the rafters which made the second half of the Q&A all the more enjoyable as it was given over to some festive community singing led by a top secret mystery special guest (https://www.garyyershon.com/). The best way to watch Scrooge (unless you happen to catch it on Talking Pictures TV (https://talkingpicturestv.co.uk/) or TPTV Encore (https://www.tptvencore.co.uk/)) is to buy the DVD of the 1951 Alastair Sim version from Renown Films (https://www.renownfilms.co.uk/product/scrooge-1951-alastair-sim-150th-anniversary-edition/), because the Seymour Hicks version is included as a bonus extra feature. Ming's research for the Q&A went above and beyond and she turned up all sorts of interesting nuggets of information much of which was found in THIS BOOK (https://ton.twitter.com/1.1/ton/data/dm/1605286925530812423/1605286919427981312/x-T5V_0L.jpg:large). Unfortuantley it's extremely expensive at the moment but is available to read in the BFI Library (https://www.bfi.org.uk/bfi-reuben-library). She also stumbled upon this (https://www.bigredbook.info/ellaline_terriss.html) - a record of the time Seymour Hicks's beloved wife and business partner, Ellaline Terris, appeared on This is Your Life. Kino Quickies 11 - Death on the Set (1935) with Richard Farmer

The cups all those millions of fans out there of the Kino Quickies mascot, Henry Kendall (https://images.mubicdn.net/images/cast_member/21478/cache-243299-1501647532/image-w856.jpg?size=240x), runneth over this day, because Death on the Set (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0027505/) treats us to a double dose of him. Our Henry plays two unlikeable men - a very unpleasent film director and his drunken and disreputable lookalike - who are locked in a cycle of crime. It's based on a book by Victor MacClure which is now out of print but you can buy it online (https://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/BookDetailsPL?bi=30612158375) if you sell all of your belongings. Our guest for the Q&A is Richard Farmer (https://www.bristol.ac.uk/people/person/Richard-Farmer-c545b81a-3b3d-41af-b60b-39d3e3e9b98e/), a researcher at Bristol University. He is currently researching UK film studios as part of a wider project called Studio Tec (https://studiotec.info/). During the Q&A we displayed two interesting maps which show the locations of all the film studios in and around London in the 1930s. Kino Quickies 10 - A Fire Has Been Arranged (1935) with Steve Chibnall

A Fire Has Been Arranged (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0026359/?ref_=ttfc_fc_tt) is the first full length feature starring the comedy musical duo, Flanagan & Allen (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flanagan_and_Allen). The first of two films in the season to be directed by Leslie Hiscott (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leslie_S._Hiscott), it also stars Robb Wilton (https://www.comedy.co.uk/people/robb_wilton/) and a 35 year old (but perpetually middle-aged) Alastair Sim (https://www.alastairsim.net/). It was, like many quota quickies, produced by Julius Hagan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_Hagen) at Twickenham Studios. (http://www.screenonline.org.uk/film/id/516865/index.html) Our guest for the Q&A is quota quickie royalty in the form of the author Steve Chibnall (https://www.dmu.ac.uk/about-dmu/academic-staff/technology/steve-chibnall/steve-chibnall.aspx), who literally wrote the book on quota quickies. It's called Quota Quickies by Steve Chibnall. Kino Quickies 09 - I Lived With You (1933) with John Snelson

I Lived With You (1933) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0024157/) - a comedy starring Ivor Novello (https://www.britannica.com/biography/Ivor-Novello), based on a play that he wrote - is the third film in this second season of Kino Quickies. Novello plays a homeless Russian prince who meets Gladys Wallis (Ursula Jeans (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0419982/?ref_=tt_ov_st)) in the maze at Hampton Court and moves in with her family. His presence in this normal family home has chaotic effects on the whole household. Also starring Ida Lupino (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0526946/?ref_=tt_ov_st) as Glad's sister, Ada and Eliot Makeham (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0538472/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t8) & Minnie Rayner (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0713475/?ref_=ttfc_fc_cl_t3) as her parents, the film was directed by the most prolific director in UK film history, Maurice Elvey (http://www.screenonline.org.uk/people/id/449112/index.html). Our guest for the Q&A is the author John Snelson (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Books-John-Snelson/s?rh=n%3A266239%2Cp_27%3AJohn+Snelson), who has written extensively about the performing arts and has a new book coming out soon about the history of British musicals. I Lived With You has been released on DVD by Renown Films (https://www.renownfilms.co.uk/). Currently, however, all the copies available online are really expensive (https://www.google.com/search?tbm=shop&sxsrf=ALiCzsZNnC98m3rmP6OIqz-rjUvBkdw-pA:1668108193204&q=%22I+lived+with+you%22+(1933)+dvd&tbs=mr:1,pdtr0:3045644%7C3045646,pdtr1:3045649%7C3045651&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjNvLWiq6T7AhUsREEAHQnnBRgQsysI3wkoAA&biw=1536&bih=714&dpr=1.25), so hopeully it will turn up on Talking Pictures TV (https://talkingpicturestv.co.uk/) and TPTV Encore (https://www.tptvencore.co.uk/) soon. Kino Quickies 08 - The Impassive Footman (1932) with Mel Byron

The Impassive Footman (1932), is the earliest film in Kino Quickies season 2. It's a tense melodrama about an unhappy marriage, a foiled affair and a doctor's dilemma, all watched over by a mysterious -you might even say impassive - footman. The film stars George Curzon (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0193633/) as the eponymous footman, Betty Stockfeld (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0830823/) & Allan Jeayes (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0420011/) as the married couple at the centre of the film and Owen Nares (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0621416/) as dashing young doctor, Bryan Daventry. NOBODY is credited as the film's director - the candidates are its producer, Basil Dean (http://www.screenonline.org.uk/people/id/547368/index.html) and Graham Cutts (http://www.screenonline.org.uk/people/id/457310/index.html). We try to get to the bottom of this in the Q&A. Our guest for the Q&A is comedian and host of the Talking Pictures TV Podcast (https://directory.libsyn.com/shows/view/id/talkingpicturestvpodcast), Mel Byron (https://melbyron.com/). The TPTV podcast is mostly made up of reviews of upcoming films submitted by TPTV viewers. Mel and the team are always looking for new contributors - especially of the lady variety because it's currently a bit chap-heavy. If you'd like to take part, get in touch with them on Twitter (https://twitter.com/tptvpodcast), Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/TPTVPodcast) or by email (mailto:talkingpictures@attaboyclarence.com). And you can follow Mel on Twitter (https://twitter.com/TheMelByron) The Impassive Footman is available as part of a DVD box set which you can buy here (https://networkonair.com/all-products/1720-ealing-studios-rarities-collection-the-volume-3). Kino Quickies 06 - Brief Ecstasy (1937) with Charles Barr

The sixth and final film in Kino Quickies season 1, screened on May 22nd 2022, was Brief Ecstasy from 1937. Directed by Edmond Gréville (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0344933/) - who is probably most famous for directing Beat Girl (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055779/?ref_=nm_flmg_dr_4) several years later - it's the story of a love triangle made up of Helen (Linden Travers (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0871298/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0)), her husband Paul (Paul Lukas (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0510134/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0)) and her former lover, Jim (Hugh Williams (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0930776/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1)). The film is an early one from Ealing, so our special guest for the Q&A was Charles Barr (https://research-portal.uea.ac.uk/en/persons/charles-barr), author of the seminal book about Ealing, "Ealing Studios (https://www.betterworldbooks.com/product/detail/9780289800942)" Charles doesn't only know about Ealing though - he's also no slouch when it comes to Hitchcock (https://the.hitchcock.zone/wiki/Charles_Barr). Kino Quickies 05 - Say it With Flowers (1934) with Gary Yershon

The fifth film in the Kino Quickies season, screened on May 8th 2022, was Say it With Flowers (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0025745/) from 1934. Directed by John Baxter (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0062759/?ref_=tt_ov_dr), it's the simple story of a group of market traders who mount a benefit concert for their sick colleague. The film features performances from three of the biggest music hall stars of the Edwardian era, Charles Coburn (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2EOvyqZj-4), Marie Kendall (https://claphamsociety.com/articles/39marie-kendall/) and Florrie Forde (https://www.stagewhispers.com.au/history/fabulous-florrie-forde). Our guest for the Q&A was the Oscar nominated film composer and all round nice chap, Gary Yershon (http://www.garyyershon.com/). Gary talked about some really interesting stuff including a bit about this woman (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laura_Ormiston_Chant), who appalled by music hall. There are three musical themes in title sequence to Say it With Flowers - this (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6TRf0n4TxU) is one of them.... ....and another is "Won't You Buy My Pretty Flowers" which is the song we all joined Gary in singing. Kino Quickies 04 - Sweeney Todd (1936) with Jade Evans

The fourth film in the Kino Quickies season, screened on April 24th 2022, was Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0028331/) from 1936. Directed by George "King of the Quickies" King and starring Tod Slaughter (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tod_Slaughter), it's the well known story of the murderous barber who polishes off his victims who are then processed into pie filling by his next door neighbour. Yum! Our specially invited expert guest for the post show Q&A, Jade Evans (https://www.qmul.ac.uk/sllf/film-studies/people/postgraduate/profiles/jade-sofia-evans.html), had a minor disaster the night before the screening when she tested positive for the dreaded Covid. Luckily, we had the technology to enable her to attend remotely via the wonders of the internet and the sound quality was only slightly affected. Follow Jade on Twitter (https://twitter.com/enchantedbyfilm) or Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/britishfilmstardom/)and find links to her research HERE (https://linktr.ee/BritishFilmStardom). Your hosts are Dom Delargy (https://twitter.com/BitesSoho) and Dr Lawrence Napper (https://www.kcl.ac.uk/people/dr-lawrence-napper) None of the prints of Sweeney Todd, as far as we can tell, are in perfect condition but if you'd like to watch a scratchy copy online, you can do that HERE (https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x22cjs8). And this British Pathe short feature (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_dCeS_Qa-U) starring Tod Slaughter is hoot! Kino Quickies 02 - Death at Broadcasting House (1934) with Jo Botting

The second film in the Kino Quickies season, screened on March 27th 2022, was Death at Broadcasting House (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0025038/) from 1934. In the futuristic and glamorous surroundings of the BBC's brand new headquarters, an actor is murdered while performing in a radio drama, live on air, before the unsuspecting ears of millions of listeners. Our specially invited expert guest for the post show Q&A was Dr Josephine Botting (https://www2.bfi.org.uk/people/josephine-botting), curator at the BFI National Archive (https://www.bfi.org.uk/bfi-national-archive) Follow Josephine Botting (https://twitter.com/reeljobotting) on Twitter Your hosts are Dom Delargy (https://twitter.com/BitesSoho) and Dr Lawrence Napper (https://www.kcl.ac.uk/people/dr-lawrence-napper) Death at Broadcasting House was based on a novel of the same name by Val Gielgud (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Val_Gielgud) and Holt Marvell (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Maschwitz). The book is now out of print and very expensive to buy second hand - however, the story was serialised for the Sydney Morning Herald in 1934 and you can read this (unfortunately low quality) scan of that serialistion HERE (https://archive.org/details/DeathAtBroadcastingHouse_201712/mode/2up?view=theater). The film is available to buy on DVD from our friends at Network Distribution (https://networkonair.com/all-products/1767-death-at-broadcasting-house?gclid=Cj0KCQjw3IqSBhCoARIsAMBkTb0KeuZ7nzt7C7xENSwjZt0qTjwSykrwp3PwDvk0hUi6E4sFFP1qf00aAn5vEALw_wcB). In the film, one of the key plot points is the that the murder happens to be recorded on a new piece of technology called a Blattnerphone, although the device itself is never shown in the movie. The audience at the Kino was treated to a picture of one. You can see that and hear an example of an actual Blatterphone recording HERE (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p098q3jv) The Inventor of the Blattnerphone was Ludwig Blattner (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ludwig_Blattner) - an interesting man who was a major player in early UK film. Book tickets for any of the films in the Kino Quickies season HERE (https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/kino-quickies-tickets-254643364157) Jo Botting runs monthly screenings of interesting, obscure and rare vintage films on Tuesday evenings at the BFI.
