Restoring Common Ground—Literally with IAN McSWEENEY of The Farmers Land Trust | Kinward 34 🌑

Three hundred million acres of farmland will change hands in the next 15 years. That’s 40% of the farmland in the US. Those numbers feel huge, but not abstract. That’s where our food comes from. And, if we stay on the path we’re on now, it’s likely that much of that land will be further consolidated (https://fortune.com/2026/08/23/american-billionaires-buying-farmland-alternative-asset-pricing-farmers-out/) into the hands of a few. As Ian McSweeney, co-director of the Farmers Land Trust (http://www.thefarmerslandtrust.org), says in this episode of Kinward: “The need and the opportunity to do something with this farmland that’s in transition now—today, tomorrow, years ahead of us—is a huge crisis. It’s also a tremendous opportunity to step into this flow of transition and offer new pathways.” The Farmers Land Trust has developed a model for fairly and equitably decommodifying farmland and placing it in community ownership. In addition to stewarding the creation of Farmland Commons (https://www.thefarmerslandtrust.org/farmland-commons/)—collectively held, locally rooted nonprofit land-holding entities—across the country, the Farmers Land Trust also provides guidance and free resources (https://www.thefarmerslandtrust.org/resources/) and tools for developing your own community land project from the ground up. This episode is about restoring common ground. The Farmland Commons model supports “food security, food access, abundance," Ian says. "And equally so—it doesn’t feed our bellies on a daily basis, but it feeds our soul—relationship. Relationship to land, relationship to each other, is so critical for any hope, any existence into a future where people flourish.” I hope you feel the flourishing futures, both latent and emerging, throughout this conversation. > check out the Farmers Land Trust’s inspiring annual report (https://www.thefarmerslandtrust.org/financials-reports/annual-report-2023-2026/?flt_share=60a36de9659235aab5cd1de9255698bf7d56af00c3a5ebc65805848e29ddce5d) > explore the ecosystem (https://www.thefarmerslandtrust.org/commons-ecosystem/) of Farmland Commons projects > Considering applying for the part time development position (https://www.thefarmerslandtrust.org/job-openings/) the Farmers Land Trust is flying now. Wonder Disruption with SARAH ANN WOODBURY | Kinward 33 🌑

Sarah ann woodbury (https://sarahannwoodbury.myportfolio.com/) is a multipassionate practitioner of encounter. She says early in this conversation that cultivating encounter with wild others has been a big part of releasing her own body and voice from the narrowness and smallness she was raised to emulate. Sarah comes from a long line of LDS settlers in Utah, “a tradition that trains those socialized as women into deference and dependence,” she says. Her years of apprenticeship to shorebirds and careful attention to brine shrimp, her deep breaths in salty places and among trees draped with moss—her commitments beyond the human—have “opened [her] throat” and made a great breadth of good work (https://sarahannwoodbury.myportfolio.com/work) in the world (advocacy, poetry, scholarship, art, embodied activism) more possible. Her work is Life finding ways. We need all the ways that Life can find to resist and undo the flattening that is being done to the world right now. Sarah brings a truly impressive breadth of tools to the work of re-rounding. sarah ann woodbury (sjörå) is a wildling poet fledged by a flock of gentle beings: two musicians, Great Salt Lake, Wasatch, and Wind Rivers. She is currently an NYU More-Than-Human Life (MOTH) Program Fellow; a Writer-In-Residence; and a PhD student researching Mormon multispecies justice and animism at Great Salt Lake in the Intermountain West. Her artist collective Apprentice collaborates with Lake to create acts of “wonder disruption" for multispecies justice. She is a founding board member for Bichu-Nanewe (Return of the People) and Los Cedros Fund. It was a joy and a pleasure to speak with sarah for this new moon episode of Kinward. Technologies of Discovery & Return with RUTHANNA EMRYS | Kinward 32 🌗

Author and cognitive psychologist Ruthanna Emrys (https://ruthannaemrys.com/) is a big thinker about agency, and about futures, and about the technologies that influence our ability (or inability) to decide, act, revise, remember, try, and try again to make the world together. I reached out to Ruthanna because I loved her “diaperpunk” novel A Half-Built Garden, about aliens who come to a near-future Earth to save us from ourselves—except, by then, we're finally reclaiming our symbiosis with our home planet, and we don't want to leave. There's still so much good work to do. Stories shape our sense of what is possible, or not. Ruthanna's is a lively mind in the pressing global project of holding space for many possible futures. In this conversation, Ruthanna orients us to technologies that can open up “directions of discovery,” encourage imagination and the fruitful friction required for effective problem solving in a complex world, and hold us accountable to one another. Some of these technologies are tools that can be held in the hand. Others are social technologies: design strategies for homecoming, care, discernment, and transformation embedded in facilitation practices, rituals, recipes, and norms. What social structures, what technologies, what tools, can support us in flexibly co-creating a winter with plenty of food, a space for repair, a necessary adjustment, a fierce devotion to more possibility? Over and over? If you are a writer, and you are in the work of asking these kinds of questions, Ruthanna wants you to submit your work to a story contest she is helping to judge this year: the Protopian Prize (https://protopianprize.com/). This contest will award $5,000 each for short fiction stories that explore “Public AI”—i.e. AI designed for the public good—and “Democratic Futures”—i.e. futures where the people decide what the people are going to do, and how. Consider submitting if you’re a writer whose vision of the more beautiful world is clear—or if you, like me, don’t know where we’re going, but can feel how we need to move to get there. Visit kinwardmoves.substack.com (http://kinwardmoves.substack.com) for full show notes. Subscribe for ongoing orientations to "the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible."
